Blind Item #2
This movie studio went so far as to throw around some "junkets" to a couple of their favorite trades to see if they could come out of the gate with stellar reviews about this new biopic being released. Not even with that money being thrown around could they get anything close to a positive review for the new movie about a singer.
Freddy Mercury/Sony?
ReplyDeleteBohemian Rhapsody
DeleteThe new Queen movie is getting poor reviews.
ReplyDeleteInteresting, I wanted to jokingly guess "Flip McVicker" for the showrunner blind and Flip is played by Rami Malek who stars in Bohemian Rhapsody, the subject of this blind!
ReplyDeleteI don't know if this movie is going to bomb or not, but I have successfully persuaded many of my music-business friends to at least skip it opening weekend so it opens poorly and then hopefully goes downhill from there. All of them know Bryan Singer is a monster. No one wants him to succeed. "Maybe if this fails badly, he'll kill himself," one of my friends said, constructively.
ReplyDeleteSeveral of them had been hearing good things about the movie, however. But if the reviews are bad it will be easier to get them to keep their word and boycott, opening weekend at least.
They should have thrown in the towel when
ReplyDeleteSacha Baron Cohen bowed out
Well there is both the Bryan Singer association hurdle to jump as well as bad press about how Freddie Mercury’s complex sexual orientation is being oversimplified (perhaps straight-washed?) at the behest of the remaining band members in Queen so as not to jeopardize future Queen album sales & tour attendance.
ReplyDeleteSo I am not so sure this film is going to give Queen the new fans & popularity & financial boosts they hope it will.
I like Queen but am not all that keen to see this film (there are plenty of good Freddie Mercury & Queen documentaries already out there, thanks).
I guess this is where Rami Malek begins to regret the end of Mr Robot! On the positive side Bohemian Rhapsody still looks likely to gross 10X what RM's Papillon remake grossed!
ReplyDeleteI really want to watch this movie, cuz I love Queen, but I just can't persuade myself to give any money to Singer and any studio who works with him. Instead I will just listen my Queen collection on CDs.
ReplyDeleteWatch Highlander and Flash Gordon again.
ReplyDeleteB626, I completely agree with you. Damn Brian May and his massive ego.
ReplyDeleteEvery time I see a commercial for the movie I cringe at Rami's voice through the false teeth.
An old buddy of mine was a roadie on one of Queen's tours. He said they had "Special Queers flown in from Britain" to service Mercury before, after, and during the sets. Exactly what constituted a "Special Queer" I never determined, as I was too naive back then to inquire further.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the movie will be able to further provide insight on this?
Well collider and screen junkies gave the movie good reviews...consensus being Malik is brilliant but the movie is merely good. Not heard any scathing ones yet.
ReplyDeleteRave reviews on IMDB so far.
ReplyDeleteI noticed that THR killed the ability to comment on almost all their stories. Disgraceful.
ReplyDeleteIt has moved my online entertainment industry trade mag reading from about 40/30/30 Variety/Deadline/THR to about 50/40/10. I hope their web traffick crashes.
Currently a green "SPLAT" at 52% on RT, btw.
ReplyDeleteHeadlines about this movie:
ReplyDelete"A Spirited Rami Malek Can't Save Bryan Singer's Royally Embarassing Queen Biopic"
"Bohemian Rhapsody is not the Freddie Mercury biopic we deserve"
"Bohemian Rhapsody accused of airbrushing Freddie Mercury's sexuality"
"Bohemian Rhapsody, big swaggering spectacle but far from a killer Queen"
So no- not rave reviews except from the outlets that are easily bought :)
BTW I have literally no opinion on this movie other than the fact that Bryan Singer is attached, so I get fairly neutral results when I search.
Rami is getting great reviews the movie anf apparently fake story are getting gaslighted by nearly every outlet.
ReplyDeleteOf the reviews I’ve read, most praised Rami, but also said that his lip syncing was very obvious, so I’m not sure how that deserves praise. I think the white-washing of Mercury’s sexuality is ridiculous, as that was such a key aspect to who he was. RE: the rest of the movie, reviews I’ve read said it fails to capture Mercury, the band, and the era, the one exception being the concerts at large venues, but only if you close your eyes and just listen to the music and not watch Rami lip syncing.
ReplyDeleteI have no intention of going to see it. Just reading reviews cause I want to see Singer get slammed.
Dexter Fletcher took over this flick although Bryan Singer will get the credit. I love Queen, so I probably will watch this film. I don't see why Queen and the memory of Freddie Mercury, not to mention everyone who worked on that film, should be punished just because of one scumbag..
ReplyDeleteBecause they knowingly got into bed with The Devil to make it. No one had a conscience til they got caught.
ReplyDeleteSometimes these bad reviews backfire big time and elevate the film to big bucks. Venom was torn apart here in Manhattan before it opened to gargantuan box office. Where do they find these 'critics' anyway? They're usually connected by marriage or family to famous or rich people. I was always surprised to read Obits about critics that their wife/husband was a major writer at a top drawer newspaper or magazine. It will never end.
ReplyDelete@boo hearne
ReplyDeletethe film was always expected to make $$$ at the box office, especially considering the multi-generation queen fanbase.
still, by buying a ticket you know EXACTLY whose pockets you are lining - and that makes you part of the problem.
bad reviews aside, Malek will probably still get nods at the globes and oscars. he wont win, but Id be surprised if they didnt nominate him. just the way it is
It is not an adult rating 12a here, teenagers in this house and all their friends will go to see it. Talking about disgraced directors will not interest them at all. It will make a lot of money.
ReplyDeleteLook at mamma mia 2, that was panned but look at the $$$$
ReplyDeleteBox Office
Budget:$70,000,000 (estimated)
Opening Weekend USA: $34,952,180, 22 July 2018, Wide Release
Gross USA: $120,634,935, 11 October 2018
Cumulative Worldwide Gross: $319,422,895, 19 August 2018
I love Queen but hate Bryan Singer. He will not get one penny of my money ever again. If I feel the need to watch the film then I’ll watch it in the comfort of a friends house, a friend who may or may not have an illegal streaming device. Allegedly.
ReplyDeleteLet it tumble to the ground. I'm sure it'll make it to Netflix or Amazon someday if it's worth seeing. It's no Walk the Line, at least Joaquin and Reese actually sang, and Johnny Cash approved Joaquin playing him and had dinner with him.
ReplyDeleteThis Bohemian Rhapsody movie is just one more cash grab over the corpse of Freddie Mercury.
@annie roo The teenagers in your house are NOT typical. Not one in my world gives a shit about Queen.
ReplyDeleteI been visiting the trailers and reminding people about pedo singer..I love Freddy ..we need a stand alone movie for just his life and without Queens ego or pedo director
ReplyDeleteRemember all the highly negative blinds about A Star is Born and how awful it was and the studio was going to lose money, everyone was embarrassing, they were editing out stuff to hide the horror, and how Gaga was terrible? Pepperidge Farm remembers. Ahem.
ReplyDeleteNeedless to say if this is about Bohemian Rhap then I’ll assume it’s actually an entertaining flick. Lol
Unpopular opinion (Even though I love Queen mind you) if it wasn't for Wayne's World, Queen would've been forgotten.
ReplyDeleteAre the rumours true that gaga s team have been dirty-dealing and badmouthing the Queen not-really-biopic everywhere so they can get all the box office?
ReplyDeleteSo far, every review I have seen says to go see her movie instead (at which point, I stop reading).
Did someone new take over The Hollywood Reporter? They got way down on their knees for their story about Megyn Kelly.
ReplyDeleteNever cared much for Queen and I worked on the first X-men movie where I heard all about Singer.
ReplyDeletethe reviews are fair no more no less
ReplyDeleterami deserves awards but the film itself is PG 13 chicken sh_t
