Did I miss something? What's going on with greyhounds in Florida?
Ophelia, Florida just banned greyhound racing so there are tons of dogs that need to be adopted/rescued.
Banned dog racing...
Aww I had no idea :( thanks guys!
11 out of the 16 Greyhound race tracks in the US are in Florida. They have to be shuttered by 2020. My mom lives near one, it's quite popular. She doesn't go but her friend does. It kills me they see nothing wrong with it.
Hope the pupsters find good homes and none are euthanized.
+1 Theroux we have a greyhound track here that ran races occasionally to keep their poker rooms open, now they don't have to do that after next year if even that.
Oh and Entern it was pretty nice of you to do what I suggested sometime last year when you ended a Friday with a Kindness and I kindly suggested to you if we could have that every Friday? So I'm kindly asking you again this year.
The same thing was about to happen here is Australia, the main reason was the welfare of the dogs. After a 60mins style program which highlighted abuses in the industry there was a big backlash against the sport, live bait traning, whole sale slaughter of unwanted dogs after there racing career was done or they weren't good enouh to race, underworld connections etc. It was virtually on the law books ready to sign off and the sport got a last min reprieve to clean up it's act or the boom will still fall in a few years time.
Those people who adopt a greyhound will be lucky, they make wonderful gentle, loyal pets but they do need to be muzzeled when they go out as they have been trained to chase down the rabbit and kill it, small dogs can often be mistaken for a rabbit.
Really happy to hear this. I remember those tracks -were in Fort Lauderdake area I believe and my grandparents, parents-we were young went on occasion as we’d stay in Boca. Never felt comfortable there and in recent years passing the exit on highway gave me chills.
Run free precious fur babies.
This is really sweet. We need more blinds like this.
Speaking of finding new homes for the needy, he might want to hook up with Caitlin Jenner. Her Malibu home just burned to the ground. Sure many more celebrities will lose their mansions as this monster fire rushes on uncontrollably.
My state outlawed greyhound racing years ago and people really stepped up to adopt. There were greyhounds everywhere. Lovely dogs
I adopted one rejected from the race team when I was in high school and you need room for these dogs to roam in. They are not bad pets per se but these animals were raise harshly and can be vicious to one another in the pack. They are crazy fast, it is hard to imagine how fast they are until they are running near you. They love killing rabbits. Mine could run one down at a full sprint and barely slowed down when he caught it. So these new owners have to be aware that these dogs are trained to kill small furry things.
Theroux understands the urge to chase something small and furry and appreciates that being a dog is one of life's noblest pursuits. Git 'em homes, Justin, git 'em! :)
Good job, Florida. Greyhounds are wonderful sweet dogs that don't deserve the continued abuse of the dog racing industry.
I would like to be wrong but I strongly suspect that very little of the $50K will reach those animal caretakers that will be doing the greyhound adoption heavy lifting as the racing tracks downsize and shut down by January 2021. Sounds like the lobbyists at the "Humane Society" of the United States are again collecting money to "help coordinate" adoptions. HSUS does not run a single pet shelter anywhere in the world and has never adopted out a dog. According to their tax returns, HSUS gives less than 1% of its annual revenue to pet shelters while stashing over $50 million in Caribbean hedge funds (Schedule F of their returns.) HSUS does very little animal rescue and uses high profile cases like disasters to divert millions from cash-strapped direct care charities. Very little is used for the intended purpose. HSUS doesnt even have an office in Florida.
Just a salaried state lobbyist. No staff. No budget. If HSUS collect $1 million to assist with adoption of these greyhounds, less than 10% will be shared with those doing the heavy lifting. HSUS gets terrible grades from watchdogs, including a D from Charity Watch for wasting so much money. Also, google "HSUS Sexual Harassment. That's where the money goes. So wait and see where contributions are needed. Not those who started begging for money the day after Prop 13 passed. Skip the middleman.
This makes me happy. I don't want to know about the fine print, I'd rather just leave this happy image in my mind. Love dogs.
@Diane That's the kind of info we need. Goody for Justin but let's do something really important for these pups.
Seth Macfarlane for someone different.
Greyhound races. Atrocious!
Now if only the bull fights in Spain will be abolished.
Thank you Diane. HSUS is an organization out for themselves and filling their own pockets.
Agree@dot dot but that will never happen Espana lives their matadors and are known to be cruel with other animals! I went to a bullfight in Madrid and it was terrible.
Loves not lives.
JT probably “borrowed” the money from Jen. She loves dogs.
@ Diane - thanks for the intel!

ALL the Kardashian sisters have had to evacuate their homes. The flames were right up to Kim's multi-million dollar home a couple of hours ago. Mother Nature doesn't give a damn who you are. When she comes for you, star status doesn't matter. Of course the film crew are covering all of this. Probably preventing the fire trucks from getting there.
Saddest sight on network news? Five Bunnies on a street hiding next to a brick wall in total shock. I hope the news team tried to help them.
P. S. The photo lead on Drudge Report entitled, Malibu Apocalypse, is one of the best shots I've seen in a long time. Want to see how massive this thing is? Take a look at that photo.
The Kardashian’s evacuating their homes? Now THAT’S a kindness blind! I hope they all burn to the ground.
@sandybrook respectfully, you think he remembers what you suggested, a good general idea, minimally 11 months ago? And @ophilia thanks for asking that. I didnt know either and its great news that florida passed this ban for the most innocent of souls, dogs. Somebody did the right thing! And they should be celebrated.
I love this kindness blinds. They are so wholesome
Martin Sheen lives in Malibu. Charlie Sheen says he can't reach them. Begging people for help in finding them.
3:22 AM
Martin Sheen found sleeping in his car on a beach in Malibu. Safe.
hey enty, i hope that you are safe from the Hollywood fires.
Sadi Porter: Thank you for reminding me that Enty lives in California! Hope you and your family & friends are safe and don't live near this conflagration. Stay safe and well. Also, a lot of the names we see on CDAN live in California as well. If we don't see your names for a couple of days we will understand you have way more important business on your mind. Our prayers and best wishes go out your way. I look at the news feeds on-line and cry every time. Take care!
Thanks Boo! I live in California about 1 1/2 hours south of the Camp Fire that burned down the town of Paradise. I have friends affected by this. I also grew up in Newbury Park and used to eat at (what is now) Borderline bar. The tragedies this week remind us all how life can be taken from us at any moment. Hug your family, tell your friends you care about them and be kind to everyone because you just never know what the next day may bring.
SW: God bless you, sweetie! I cannot imagine how scary life is for you and your friends right now. Wish I was there to give you all a big hug! Stay safe!
SATURDAY 12:53 PM
The New York Times newspaper has a big story on the Florida Greyhounds. You can access it on-line.
I have owned 5 rescued greys in my life and they are wonderful dogs. Very chill and really just couch potatoes. 1,000 times easier than German Shepherds which is what I rescue now, lol.
@Sandybrook I like the idea of Friday Kindness Blind!!!!
