Today's Blind Items - He Did See Her Again - Old Hollywood

The legend has it that this former A+ list celebrity, after killing a man, never again saw the woman who was with him at the time of the death. She came from a very wealthy family, but the former A+ list celebrity was even more wealthy. He preferred dating women without means because he was embarrassed when he did something to cause high society to turn their noses at him. This was one of those times. He did try to keep her out of the press and to not involve her, but he was unable to do so. Embarrassed at what he had put her through, he always told people he never saw her again after a very public spectacle regarding the killing of the man.

This is not true though. He did see her again and once again, she managed to be there for a death. This time though, there were no doubts that the A+ lister killed a man. Our celebrity and the woman were in Santa Barbara for polo. It was late summer, just a month or so after the last time he had seen her. He had driven to Santa Barbara to make amends. After the match, they attended an event. At the event, an African-American waiter spent a little too much time talking to the date of the A+ lister. She explained that his wife had been an employee of her family for decades. Apparently our A+ lister was still upset that she had been speaking to him as a friend and in public where others would see. He confronted the waiter while the waiter was taking a smoke break in the back. Words were exchanged and then the A+ lister hit the waiter over the head with a tire jack and killed him. He then went back inside, grabbed his date and took her home. Immediately after that he had his attorney start working the phones and writing checks and our A+ lister never even had to give a police interview.

Apparently the woman left the next day and didn't step foot back in her family home until the wife of the man killed, retired.

I'll say Howard Hughes as a guess

Sounds like Howard Hughes and Nancy Bayly Watts, who was from Santa Barbara. From Hughes wiki page:

On July 11, 1936, Hughes struck and killed a pedestrian named Gabriel S. Meyer with his car at the corner of 3rd Street and Lorraine in Los Angeles.[87] After the crash, Hughes was taken to the hospital and certified as sober, but an attending doctor made a note that Hughes had been drinking. A witness to the crash told police that Hughes was driving erratically and too fast, and that Meyer had been standing in the safety zone of a streetcar stop. Hughes was booked on suspicion of negligent homicide and held overnight in jail until his attorney, Neil S. McCarthy, obtained a writ of habeas corpus for his release pending a coroner's inquest.[88][89] By the time of the coroner's inquiry, however, the witness had changed his story and claimed that Meyer had moved directly in front of Hughes' car. Nancy Bayly (Watts), who was in the car with Hughes at the time of the crash, corroborated this version of the story. On July 16, 1936, Hughes was held blameless by a coroner's jury at the inquest into Meyer's death.[90] Hughes told reporters outside the inquiry, "I was driving slowly and a man stepped out of the darkness in front of me."

Holy smokes. I hate SO MUCH that the ultra rich have different rules than the rest of us. "Life ain't fair" is a painful lesson to learn.

I am with you, Montana... that widow should have never needed to work again.

The problem with the Hughes guess is that Santa Barbara is in an entirely different county than Los Angeles and any cover up would have to involve officials from both, but I guess anything is possible.

Did anyone read the new Hughes biography by Karina Longworth, the woman who did the "You Must Remember This" podcast?

I didn't, but she did a series of podcasts about it and I believe this incident was mentioned.

The podcast is pretty good, if you haven't heard it - she did a good series fact-checking on Kenneth Anger's "Hollywood Babylon".

Karina does have annoying neo-Marxist politics, however, and gets very upset when people in the 1940s do not act like people would be expected to act in 2019.

The only thing with Hughes is that he dated plenty of women with means. He practically slept with every famous actress at that time.

I'm currently reading this book, Seduction Sex Lies and Stardom in Howard Hughes Hollywood. I'm almost up to 1936 in it, so curious what's in book. He was extremely controlling.... When little his mom checked his feces NIGHTLY. Yea, that's normal

If it was the 1930's then the polo fields was on Middle Road in Montecito. Just up the hill from the Lower Village. Nowadays the polo fields are out beyond Summerland, almost in Carp. After the polo game the most likely place for dinner back then would have been either the Coral Casino at Butterfly Beach, or else the Montecito Country Club. The Biltmore, across the street from the Coral Casino, or the Montecito Inn on Coast Village Road are other possibilities. But less likely. Although the Montecito Inn had very strong Hollywood connections.

I think the Coral Casino is the most likely place this would have happened. Before the War it was trying very hard to be a glamorous destination venue and in my experience its always had a bit of a sketchy vibe. So most likely place to make a body disappear, no questions asked.

@MD being rich and coming from money are two different things, esp back in the day. I think it is referring to WASP society women, not wealthy famous actresses

MDAnderson said...

That makes more sense then. Thanks for the explanation gauloise.

The military gave all their contracts to Hughes even though they knew that Hughes had baby farms running 24/7 so he could exsanguinate the newborns and bathe in their blood. A genealogical dig reveals Hughes does indeed descend from the Bathory line which is where we get the term "Bath". Hughes is American exceptionalism at its zenith. Foul Play and Free Enterprise backing each other up all the way. G-D Bless Amur'ca!

Nutty: I like Karina and You Must Remember This, but she mispronounces lots of the names from old Hollywood and it makes me think she's not a real Old Hollywood fan OR she's a really new one.

@Mischief girl

Yes I agree. It does seem like this people have different rules.
But if anyone has read Hughes biography they will know that this man paid for everything he did. As most do before leaving this earth. You can murder, steal and betray, but being wealthy doesn't mean you will not pay for this. It's just the currency you pay is different: depression, resentment, fear, anger, sadness. While others can enjoy their last days without that conflicting state of mind.
Every psychoanalyst worth his sault will tell you: There's nothing wrong we do in this world that is left untouched. You can only bend the nature of reality for so long before it bites back.

"Moronic assumption based on nothing much?" I've listened to Karina's podcasts for several years. Her politics are clearly reflected in her work. They're grad student white girl Marxism.

@Glitter I've also noticed that Karina stumbles a lot when it comes to the pronunciation of names. My guess is that most of her sources are written, including the credits on the films themselves. Still, it seems like there must be some way to discover the correct pronunciation - original radio broadcasts? old video interviews?
