ReplyDeleteI read all the Hardy Boys books when I was a kid but Franklyn W Dixon doesn't exist. So another set was called Chip Hilton a superstar high school and later college athlete and they were written by an ex basketball coach named Clair Bee and he was a real person, so by default.

But I know that was a drastic change for her and her career.

ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday, Beverly Cleary! 💓Millions of hugs to you!💓 She was my absolute favorite, and was a favorite of so many of my past students. I really struggled with reading independently until I found her books and wanted to stick with the characters enough to keep going. Also loved 101 Dalmatians and Wind in the Willows.

Encyclopedia Brown was a young John Shaft, a bad mother oh wait. I just got it why they called him Shaft, "the black private dick," I thought it was just because he shafted the bad guys. Damn that really was some blaxpoitation sh!t 🤔

ReplyDeleteFrom the same era as Beverly Cleary was Walter R. Brooks who wrote 26 wonderful books about Freddy the pig. One of my favorites was "Freddy and the Baseball Team from Mars" The books were fun to read and so well written. Walter R. Brooks also wrote short stories about the famous Mr. Ed the talking horse.

ReplyDeleteLittle know fact: Cleary wrote pornographic parodies of her work, the first fan fic and it was by the actual author. The tale of Ribsy and Ramona's puppies is better than anything you see in the KS genre, even with aliens.
ReplyDeleteI ate up all of Palahniuk's books. Survivor was a book I read cover to cover and could not believe lightning struck that man's pen twice, let alone several times. As for when I was a young I think it was R L Stein, yeah Scholastic book faires were pretty much the best.
