    2. She did not climb Everest she did a trek to the Everest base camp that she was paid to do by Eddie Bauer.

  2. So stupid to even go there. They just removed a frozen body with the person's arms still up!!

  3. You decide to climb Mt Everest, what happens to you is your problem.

  4. I was really.. I dunno. All for personal challenges but a lot of tragedy there of late

  5. 11 people died already this season. I was reading an article last night about the conditions. Apparently it’s over-crowded so there are lots of delays (so you’re not staying warm), and in some places it’s single file with others going in the opposite direction, so you have to clip your gear, move past the person, un-clip it, re-clip it, and repeat. Besides the people who are dead, there are those who are incapacitated and have to be taken down.

Let’s just say this is not on my ‘bucket list.’

@J: Agree with you. I have to say I’m having a difficult time mustering up any sympathy.

  6. Google 'green boots', they still don't know who he actually is.
If you sprain your ankle up there, you die. They won't let people help you down or else they'll die too. And that's not even taking into consideration oxygen depravation or the severe cold.

But Brian Blessed tried it twice and got as high as 800ft from the top and had to turn back. He was one of, if not the oldest person ever to try climbing it.

But then he is Brian fucking Blessed, not a mere mortal human like us.

  7. I know there is supposed to be a mass hatred for Mandy here but her climb was also in support of a charity that aids families of people who died there.

  8. I know lots of people who've hiked to Everest Base camp. It's up there with competing in an Ironman, hiking to Machu Pichu, hiking Kilimanjaro. Except with the last one, some rich people think that Everest is within reach. It's not. It's ego. Waiting 12 hours in the Everest death zone, as your Sherpa guide carries you there is just ego. In mountain culture, it's called accepted risk. You wouldn't want others to stop you, so why would you stop others? And the mountaineers humble brag that still one in ten die up there.

Mandy is full of herself, but I doubt that she's the biggest ego there. And I'm sure the guys at basecamp are eyeing her like she's the 8th peak!

  9. Brian Blessed is awesome.

    Not mortal indeed; Divus Augustus.

    Multiple thumbs up.

  10. Lots of articles this week about Everest. Huge trash and human waste problem, people dying on or near the Summit, literal traffic jams of hikers and the corpses of dead bodies strewn about. Complete chaos on the mountain. Why the hell is Mandy Moore up there? Strange place for publicity. I know she made it to base camp, so she definitely saw some shit up there (no pun intended). Let's see how she handles it.

  11. I think her goal was only to reach base camp. Whatever. Sad that Everest has become literally a death defying amusement park ride. Horrible.

  12. Fun fact: Mt Everest is exactly 29,000 feet tall though they publically state that it's 29,003 ft tall because the 29,000 exact figure makes it look like they are guessing.

  13. I should add that Mandy's charity expedition is a paid Eddie Bauer Ad. Eddie Bauer is trying to get it's name out in adventure wear. They market like they're the new North Face or Arcteryx, they're not. Or even Red Bull, by branding with extreme, or adventure athletes. And now they've added celebrities. And it makes sense that they would go in May when the world's media turns it's attention to Everest, when mountaineers are hitting the peak. At least they're not faking any stunts with her.

  14. Climbing Everest should (but never can) go back to what it was: a *rare* feat of strength, skill, risk and stupidity. What is is now, is fashion. I have no doubt that in coming weeks a Kardashian (complete with glam squad and photogs) will attempt the climb, and Kylie will begin an 'Everest' fashion line.

  15. I think it's interesting that Chimborazo is "highest" when distance is measured from the Earth's center. The planet isn't spherical.

  16. There are no requirements to climb except $11,000. The inexperienced climbers are delaying everything causing people to remain at the higher altitude.

  17. I just don't get why people think she is being insensitive. I'm serious. It is one of those things that you work for, yes people die, but it is a RISK THEY TOOK GOING TO CLIMB EVEREST.

  18. Everest should be shut down. It’s nothing but a theme park attraction. And all the egomaniacs who go up there just for bragging rights while showing no respect for the dead or the mountain itself should be ashamed of themselves.

  19. Heather, I totally agree.

  20. okay maybe MM is being called insensitive because she is otherwise just a jerk but "people dying around her" sounds far more nefarious. On Everest, folks die. She could champion NOT climbing it, talk about the trash, risks, etc vs just championing herself and her charity but I don't think "folks dying around you" sounds right for this. I mean, it happens. She isn't going into a crack den and throwing a rave for charity watching folks laying in the corners OD-ing on heroin or similar. Very misleading.

  22. @freckles $11K is just the fee to be there. It's more like $45-60K. That's why sponsorship is so important. If your a guide, or health guru, that pic at the top is the best advertising. It's like medaling at the Olympics (which way more people have done).

If your rich, it's up to $130K. Think Hemmingway and big game hunting in the post WWI era.

Everest has become a circus. Nepal needs to rethink Everest policies because the current ones aren't working. Photos from Everest this season look like theme rides at Six Flags on holiday weekends. Crazy long lines of people just standing and waiting. It's crazy stupid and people are dying unnecessarily.

  24. There is something very dismaying about people lined up to reach the summit, with dead bodies in shot, not to mention all the bodies left on the way up. If you're climbing Everest as a personal goal, how do you just climb past the dead and stay focused on your goal? Seems very inhuman to me, really a snapshot of of our upside-down morality today I feel.

  25. Didn’t Mandy Moore cheat with that guy from psyched while he had a gf? Insensitivity and lack of consideration for others seem to be her thing.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Enty, enough with these blinds, which is just you passing judgment without an actual fact behind it other than your opinion. This close to cancelling the podcast.

  27. They need more restrictions. Climbers should have to provide credentials before receiving a permit, to weed out the inexperienced, and they need to raise the fees and severely limit the number of climbers.

  28. What is the issue with this woman performing a charity gig at Everest exactly? It's hardly up there with Hollywood paedo rings..

    ReplyDelete
  29. The people that climb Mt. Everest are not newbies. Everyone world wide knows exactly what the dangers are. She has no culpability in any climber successfully or unsuccessfully making it home alive.

Mandy Moore may have been described as being a cold heartless bitch. What better place than Mt. Everest for someone that is cold?

  31. I was her biggest fan. Now I hate her.

  32. This is definitely Mandy Moore and doing the Everest trek. She was there because IT WAS A PAID SPONORSHIP BY EDDIE BAUER. Mandy was there because she’s a greedy cunt and could care less about the issues at Everest with people dying or the waste situation and the sherpas that put their lives at risk... she doesn’t even address it in her posts. Eddie Bauer paid her to do the trek. She’s not about to get all geo-political about the dead people, overcrowding and the waste. Ps I hope there’s and avalanche and only she gets buried.

  33. The Summit is the size of 2 ping-pong tables. You don't hang out and try to take selfies. I read that the summit is so crowded with people trying to take pics that there is shoving to get that perfect shot. And, no, Mountain Mama, some ARE newbies. My brother is a climber and has told me that some people don't calculate those oxygen needs properly and are forced to go back down due to their stupidity. The average cost for the climb is about $70,000 for permits, equipment and assistance. That does not take into account travel, food and tips to the Sherpa's. It equates to at least $100,000.

    ReplyDelete
  34. There was a photo the other day of a long line of people going up to the summit. I have climbed a lot of mountains in my day but cannot imagine wanting to climb through that traffic jam. Clearly, however, for some it's a prize. Albeit with a known risk, so I can't feel too bad for those who lose. There are more people trying to summit because there are more wealthy people in the world. And Nepal makes money off this situation and it's half their mountain. Basically, I have no complaint about this other than I just don't get why people enjoy it.

  35. Just read Jon Krakauer's book, Into Thin Air. And, amateurs do climb Everest. He details one woman who kniew nothing about climbing, and hired a sherpa to carry her. Everest is a total dump, and has been for decades with left over oxygen tanks, dead bodies, trash, etc. Up in that altitude, bodies don't decay, and the trash just stays. Everest should be closed for climbing for a decade.

  36. Hey MountainMama, I just got back from there a week ago (we just finished installing a small Starbucks at the top), and on the decent, there are TONS of newbies that have money and paid Sherpa's to get them up and down. Word is that they will be cutting back on the permits allowed and peeps are trying to get their climb in before the end of season.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Out of shape wealthy Boomers & Instagram types shouldn't be allowed within 100 miles of the mountain & Mandy Moore's timing is shit

  38. Jon Krakauer did a hell of a hatchet job on Sandy Hill Pittman, and according to David Breashears, in an interview I remember from 1997-98 (Breashears being another experienced climber who has climbed Everest multiple times, and participated in the rescue due to he and his team being already on the mountain shooting an IMAX documentary), it was completely undeserved--she had already summitted six of the Seven Summits, with Everest being the last she had to climb, He felt Krakauer made too much of a scapegoat out of Pittman due to her being a woman and wealthy (she'd been married to a big-shot TV exec who, IIRC, was involved w/MTV's launch), and firmly stated that she got herself to the summit and back down again, because, while sherpas can be of some help, in the end you HAVE to do the hard work yourself, which she did, and--unlike some people who supposedly knew better--she lived to tell the tale.
He also made no bones about his opinion of both Rob Hall and Scott Fischer (the leaders of the two main teams on the mountain who had both died there). Breashears felt Hall's deciding to stay on the mountain with the dying Doug Hansen, which ended up being the death of him as well (and was seen by outsiders as terribly noble, esp. due to his wife's being pregnant and talking to him on the satellite phone while he was dying), was only the decent thing to do--in Breashears' eyes, if you're a tour/team leader and you get people up there, they're your responsibility, and you'd damn well better stay with them, no matter what, because if it wasn't for you they wouldn't be there in the first place. His opinion of Fisher, if memory serves, wasn't really any better; basically, he felt (again, IIRC) the whole tragedy boiled down to a lot of stupidity and arrogance, and--as is happening this year--too many people trying to summit at the same time, with the problem in this case being that, in the process, a lot of people were too far above Base Camp IV when the storm hit and the sun went down. There's also apparently some question as to whether both Hall and Fischer didn't take the weather forecast--which predicted a storm--seriously enough, thinking that everyone would be back at Base Camp IV by then.
On the brighter side, it was obvious that he was totally blown away by the fact that Beck Weathers survived, in spite of being literally left for dead once and being assumed to be dying after that, and that, in spite of losing his nose, right hand and forearm, parts of his feet, and all the fingers on his left hand, he actually came out of the experience as a far better man than he'd before before he landed in Nepal. (According to Weathers' own account, he was an asshole to his wife and a terrible father, but apparently damn near dying twice, if you survive, has a way of knocking some sense into you, and he came through it all with his priorities in life having done a complete 180; he basically felt the old him had died up there, and it was worth it in the end to lose some valuable parts to get there. He was able to eventually get a new nose thanks to plastic surgery, and I'm guessing by now he has a decent prosthetic arm, so there's that.)
Here's a piece that Breashears wrote about going back on the mountain a year later: https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/everest/exposure/epilogue.html

  41. Holy Cow Robin TMP, You Da MVP for posting that. I remember reading the article in Vanity Fair a very very long time ago. That was a great summary and I love that the focus is on Breashears; he kinda reminds me of me except the almost dying part wasn't from extreme mountain climbing.

Maybe the summit is taller now. (because of the bodies)
