Garofalo was cool, but Helena Bonham Carter was the best Marla Singer possible.
Courtney Love would have been great in the role, and in fact wrote the best line in the movie. HBC is great in everything, so ... Janeane Garofolo is a legend in her own mind. She also walks down the street in NYC reading a book, so there's that. She would have been terrible in that part, because she's not pretty. Norton was being nice.
@mck does the greatest line include the words "grade school"???
I doubt norton could influence the director that much, but if he did, it was a good call
Garofalo would have made a horrible Marla.
I dunno, this is tough choosing between an Oscar worthy actress like HBC or a comic that isn't funny like Garofalo.
Courteney wouldn't even have to act to ace that part.
So Ed Norton is lower on the hierarchy than Janine (A-/B+ versus A-)? Hm.
@LooLooEasy, Janine gets bonus points for her CDAN fan base.l
Right, it's not baldy's lack of talent cost her the role.
Garofalo is always the same character. So unless you wanted Marla to be changed into Garofalo, and not vice versa, she would have been a terrible choice.
Sorry to hear about Shannen Doherty. She is so young and has seemingly been fighting cancer for a long time. I can't imagine her reality.
Isn't fight club too patriarchal for Garafolo?
FIGHT CLUB
the studio wanted Russell Crowe Matt Damon and Reese Witherspoon
David Fincher got Brad Pitt Edward Norton and Helena Bonham Carter
THE DEPARTED
the studio got Nicholson Damon and Wahlberg
Scorsese wanted Pacino Pitt and Liotta
THE GODFATHER
the studio wanted olivier burt reynolds and redford
coppolla got brando james caan and pacino
GANGS OF NEW YORK
scorsese wanted dafoe polley and dicaprio
the studio got day lewis diaz and dicaprio
@Brad, Those all actually make a lot of sense. I thought The Departed sucked, but it could have been great with Pacino, Pitt and Liotta.
Brayson, if you want to purge your memory of The Departed have you seen the Hong Kong film it was based on?
Infernal Affairs is one of the best films I have seen. The sequels weren't so good but the first was truly entertaining.
@Roger, No I haven't seen that, thanks for the recommendation. 👍
Definitely looks interesting and the story fits Hong Kong a lot better.
@mck. How do you know that Janeane walk down the streets of NYC reading a book? ou know her.
They're going to remake Internal Affairs. https://collider.com/internal-affairs-remake-paramount/
only if you don't understand it even a teeny tiny bit
