Heath Ledger Vanity Fair - August 2000

Back in August of 2000, Vanity Fair put Heath Ledger on their cover and had an in-depth interview with him. At the time, he was filming A Knight's Tale in Prague.

Here is the introduction to the article. If you would like to read the very lengthy interview, click here.

We’re Havin’ a Heath Wave

After watching Heath Ledger play Mel Gibson’s son in The Patriot, Hollywood veterans pegged him as that rare phenomenon—an actor with the effortlessly seductive masculinity of a classic screen idol. In the Czech Republic, where the 21-year-old Australian is starring in his second historical epic, A Knight’s Tale, the author learns about Ledger’s youth in the racetrack pits of Perth, the reason he walked out of the audition for his breakthrough role, and why he has never bothered with an acting lesson.

  2. God, he was beautiful. What a difference 8 years in Hollywood had on him.

  3. Was he a natural blond or brunette? Just curious. It seems like in recent years he wanted to tone down his natural handsomeness, just like Johnny Depp and Ethan Hawke did.

  4. Beautiful man. The hole he's left seems to get bigger. All that potential...heartbreaking.

Tracee you hit the nail on the head Hollywood needs to start looking after the young and the talented. It seemed like Heath was never comfortable with the attention and adoration.

  5. Sad. Ironic that Mel Gibson thought that Heath was grounded and would be better able to handle the fame than he (Gibson) did at such a young age.

Just an observation: What's with all the cigarette smoking in Hollywood today?

  14. Cool - I was wondering how to do that info thing.

LOL It's nothing exclusive - just a couple of the 50th anniversary ones for this year - but they're still fun. Of course Smurfette, being the only female, is jumping out of a cake.

  19. woooo. Heads up on that statement guys, it is darling and heartbreaking all at once.

Thanks god its raining cats and dogs and its been dead at work because I just lost it.

"Please respect our need to grieve privately," Williams said in a statement released on Friday by Ledger's spokeswoman. "My heart is broken."
"I am the mother of the most tender-hearted, high-spirited, beautiful little girl who is the spitting image of her father," Williams said in her statement.

"All that I can cling to is his presence inside her that reveals itself every day.

His family and I watch Matilda as she whispers to trees, hugs animals, and takes steps two at a time and we know that he is with us still. She will be brought up with the best memories of him."

    tissue?

  20. How incredibly heartbreaking. I can't imagine what she's going through. I'm sure he's watching over both of them right now.

  21. Oh my God. MW's statement is wrenching!

What an Adonis. Seriously. Fame totally destroyed that beautiful, talented soul. It really is such a goddamn pity.

  22. God, those are some hot pictures of him.

    What a shame.

  23. So sad. Great photos and article. It isn't Hollywood it is the booze and drugs - all too easy. We all condone it and laugh at the drug jokes. I find it odd that so many celebs when they are not making movies and enjoying life that way do one of 2 things - drugs/booze religion. We all need to learn life is fine without excesses. Enjoy the moment.

  26. Love these photos and it is all still so sad. He shone so brightly for such a short time. It will be interesting to finally have the coroner's findings. I noticed that they have found Pimp C dies from a combination of sleep apnea and cough medicine. As Heath's original toxicology was not screaming drugs I am thinking sleep apnea may have played a part. If that is the case this is an even worse tragedy than it already appears because he was telling everyone who would listen he couldn't sleep. He was waking after a couple of hours on Ambien - sleep apnea wakes you up because you stop breathing - and it could have been remedied. At the very least he would have known to be extra careful with sleeping tablets.
