Your Turn
I have to say that last week everyone gave me lots of great ideas for future Your Turns. We have talked a lot about films and music in the Your Turn segment, but never your all-time favorite television show. You know the one, where if you did not have a way to record it or watch it online. No matter what you would be in front of that television watching that show.
I know I'm going to get hated on for this, but I loved Ally McBeal, and there has been a hole in my life ever since it went off the air.
ReplyDeleteGrowing up, it was "Little House on the Prairie"...I wanted to be Laura Ingalls Wilder and I was hot for that adopted brother Albert of hers! If I could have reached through the television screen and choked Nellie Olsen I would have been so happy. She was such a bitch!

ReplyDeleteAs a kid, I loved Three's Company. That episode where Jack takes tranquilizers and then gets drunk at a party and starts doing a dance with a plant on his head is classic!

Lost has always been that way for me, and the only other show that I am that obsessed with is Tim and Eric's Awesome Show Great Job, although Whitest Kids U Know, 30 Rock, and The Office are big contenders.
ReplyDeleteLOST - I've skipped rehearsals, traded shifts at work, been late for birthday parties, you name it, to make sure I didn't miss an episode. I have every season on DVD. I spend a lot of time searchoing for clues, and I am trying to read the books that are referenced in the show. I am obsessed. I can't wait 'til the new season starts!

Twin Peaks. I scheduled work around it. I still get all worked up every time I think about the last episode, and I'm still pissed at Lynch for making "Fire, Walk With Me" instead of giving me some freakin' resolution!!!

The shows I don't miss are not necessarily good shows, but are shows that remind me of a good time in my life, generally childhood. 60s and 70s game shows do it, as does Little House and Hogan's Heroes (which is what I have on right now). My all time favorite though-The Carol Burnett Show, hands down.

ReplyDeleteGrowing up I'd always make sure I was up for Saturday morning cartoons - the original Spiderman I still love to watch - and the original Scooby Doo (not that interloper Scrappy).
For "real" tv we always watched MASH and I still watch it today (love the History Channel).

ReplyDeleteFor mostly the same reason I love Battlestar Galactica -- I have a thing for sci-fi settings and non-sci-fi plots. The human element in QL and BSG makes for an excellent TV Show, but the sci-fi ambiance makes the geek in me happy!

ReplyDeleteMASH-I saw all the first run episodes then watched all the syndicated episodes. At one point in NJ, you could watch MASH five times a day. my mom and I would make tea and watch it every night together at 11pm.

ReplyDeleteI had to watch ABC news for Peter Jennings out of London around the late 1970s because I had a massive crush on him. I was 10 in 76, so there ya go. Peter Jennings in his trenchcoat was so dignified and dreamy
All my friends crushed on the Hardy Boys (Shaun Cassidy, Parker Stevenson), but I loved Peter.
My folks were proud I had an interest in world events =)
It's been M*A*S*H for years and years, but Mad Man is now my all-time #1. It's truly art.

Sunday nights...Sopranos. Still mourning. Now I'm digg'in "Big Love". Bill Paxton never looked so sexy. Here in Canada, our cheap networks are like, 20 years behind, so there might be other dark, campy stuff out there that I am unaware of. But hey, we had Mr. Dress-Up.

I'm not so much for TV anymore. I get all my viewing pleasure from my computer, but if I do watch TV it's definitely CNN or Headline News.
I used to watch CBS soaps, though, and had my mother tape Y&R and B&B when I had to go to band camp (don't start.) Well, she got hooked on them and so did my grandmother. My mother has since passed on, and I simply don't have the time, but my Meema watches both shows daily almost twenty years later...And BTW- Brooke is still having kids...

I would have to say that it's a toss-up between The Golden Girls and The Cosby Show. I have intensely strong memories of watching both of them as a kid -- Thursday night and Saturday night -- and they're both just comforting to me somehow. And both are still relevant, witty, and I love how all I need to see is ten seconds of the show and I can tell you exactly which episode it is. I own a picture of the actual GG house; someone gave it to me back in college and it's always been one of my most prized possessions. And I grew up with Rudy Huxtable, essentially. Watching her is kinda like reliving my own girlhood, in a way. Maybe that's why she's totally my favorite Cosby kid.

yup. i was a trekkie before it was cool to be a trekkie.
i met mr. bunny because of it. i was president of the high school sci-fi club (IDIC) and we had a club afterward. it was pretty sad.
later, i loved WKRP in cincinnati, i wouldn't go to the hospital to have my son until it was over!
i also loved dead like me, and am so very pissed that there's a third season in the can somewhere and nobody's dared to put it on the air!
and of course now, survivor (since season one!) even in the hospital, i make deals with any room mates so i can watch it, and HOUSE!!!

As a young girl I loved Family Affair there was a clothing store "Family Affair" about 20 minutes from our house and I begged to be allowed to buy something from there (but I come from a large family and money was tight back then and the clothes were very expensive) but I did have my Mrs. Beasley doll that I cherished. As a teenager Dallas, (I admit to buying into the whole dream season because I missed Bobby so much) and now BONES I could watch it over and over again (and do on the weekends my hub is away)

Dallas was the one show I was allowed to stay up late to watch as a kid...although that doesn't say a lot for my parents.
All time favorite though is the original 90210. I can't believe how much I missed Brenda after she left, but I watched the show all the way until the end. I am watching them all again via Netflix and my hubby thinks I"m insane.
Buffy the Vampire slayer- grew up watching it teenage years are vital :D

ReplyDeleteErm, hello out there! I don't comment very often, but just thinking about this question made me realize what a predictable horror geek I am. I mean, I sort of knew, but looking back the only shows I COULD NOT MISS have been American Gothic, X-Files, Buffy, Angel and Supernatural.

Oh yeah, true crime. Cannot tear myself away from the TV when the First 48 comes on A&E.

ReplyDeleteWe used to have Dynasty parties for the season premieres, and God help anyone who interrupted those Wednesday nights.
My mother's shows were "Days Of Our Lives", "The Doctors" and "General Hospital"... on road trips, we absolutely *had* to be in a hotel room when those shows came on or there was hell to pay after my mother got off the phone with her sister long distance to find out what happened.
