We do, Enty. Vet organizations sell red poppy pins, but you have to look for them. They're just not as available as they used to be.

Judy, you have to look for the poppies because they are sold by veterans and sadly, there aren't as many as there used to be.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that poppies are not a tradition in the US for Remembrance/Veterans Day.
Canadians - please give generously when purchasing your poppy. The funds raised from the poppy drive are used for veterans programs, the legions and so forth.

@Eileen - I believe the poppies became the symbol for Remembrance & Veterans Day because of the famous poem, In Flanders Fields by John McCrae (a Canadian). It was written in 1915 after McCrae witnessed the death of a close friend during WW1.

the poppies we get aren't pins. they're on wire that you hook through a buttonhole. maybe they're different in different parts of the country.

ReplyDeleteHere in Quebec they're getting somewhat harder to come by. Some stores have driven the veterans out, claiming they're causing a ruckus, interfering with shoppers, whatever. Of course, people report these stores so the local news makes sure everyone knows what assholes they are.

Pays to post late: just learned the poppy was first worn by an American woman. It picked up in Europe, originally to raise funds for disabled children, then disabled veterans. It was made an official symbol for Remembrance Day here in Canada in 1921. The symbol of the poppy has been around since the Napoleonic Wars.
Wear it on the left lapel, close to your heart. With pride.
