Crazy News Of The Day

For the past week as I have been reading about bizarre stories like Alfie and things like that I keep stumbling on some of those blurbs about odd news and I just have to share. This is not going to be a daily feature, but just when I happen to stumble across something that makes my jaw drop a little.

Snakes On A Plane (Not The Movie) - An Australian man was arrested today when he tried to board a flight from Australia to Bangkok. Why was he arrested? Well in his suitcase he had tried to smuggle on board the plane 24 shingleback lizards, 16 bluetongue lizards and four snakes. Apparently the security screeners were sharp enough to see them when the bag went through the x-ray machine. Wow. Can you imagine if those things had got loose on the plane? The value of the animals was about $150K so they were certainly pricey.

How About An Internet Cafe? - A 19 year old was arrested in Florida yesterday at a Starbucks for trying to steal a laptop from a 62 year old man. Earlier the 19 year old had asked the man if he could check his Facebook account because he really needed to see something. When the man refused, the teen snatched the laptop and started running. He didn't get far. Patrons of the Starbucks managed to rouse themselves and tackled and teen until the cops arrived. As they were waiting for the cops, he just kept saying, "I need to do my 25 random things."

  6. i had so much anxiety about 25 random things i couldn't do it.
    i also can't go in a starbucks because i think it's a communist plot.

    oooh, look, there's two!! :)

i saw the lizard/snake thing, but not the whole story.
besides being an idiot, why did he want them? if he turned them loose, they could have destroyed the entire country (yes, my geography is probably worse than palin's-sarah, not michael). look what the rabbits did to australia!
hopefully they were intended as some sort of delicacy, but still...

  7. bionic bunny! - Most likely sold as pets to enthusiasts. There is quite a market for rare exotic animals (mostly spiders, lizards, snakes and scorpions), and people like to collect them like some people collect stamps.

Some get loose (which is why there are snakeheads in USA if i've read correctly), but most are not cared for properly and die within their first year (wrong habitat/conditions). I HATE illegal animal trade with a passion. It's always some twat with too much money on their hands, wanting to show off to friends about their 'poisonous/rare snake', or whatever...

These animals are taken from the wild (sometimes species that are nearly endangered/actually on the endangered list), and put into a glass tank for the amusement and whim of someone who couldn't possibly care for it correctly (wild animals really don't thrive in captivity - they rarely if ever breed, many don't eat due to stress, they tend to have really fussy needs that the owner hasn't been informed of etc).

It's really not the same thing as getting a captive bred snake/lizard (and i don't agree with keeping any animal that needs caging - with the exception of fish, if given the correct care).

Sorry for the rant - it's one of my touchy subjects :/

  8. I should add - not all illegal animal trading is done to sell them as pets (a lot are for food, breeding, leather/fur, circus/entertainment, captivity etc).

  9. I'm with you, stiffkittens! Eff those bastards.

I hate them stuffing those poor traumatized creatures together in a freaking suitcase.

I swear, when the aliens really come, we are all in serious shit.

  10. selenakyle - Lol. If/when aliens come to invade (granted i will be alive in some form or other, humans still exist, and i don't get killed before i can carry it out), i'm going to become a traitor to our species. Fuck humans.

The only saving grace is that there has to be a parallel dimension opposite to ours in every way for our reality to exist, so the more we screw this planet up - in theory - the better that dimension gets.
I like to think that that one is the 'correct' reality, and ours is just the mirror ;)

It's 2am here, i'm ill, and i need to stop watching The X-Files. Scully is the perfect woman.

Enty - thank you for triggering my snake phobia. yeesh.

Still waiting to see your 25 random things. Though I have to say, I'm digging the random music album cover thing way more than the 25 things
