Your Turn

I know I usually have Your Turn a little later in the day, but I wanted everyone to have the chance to really participate today and share some great stories. So, with that in mind and with Valentine's Day coming up tomorrow, I thought that what would be best today is: The most romantic thing anyone has ever done for you, or that you have done for someone. I want details people. I know everyone else wants details. It doesn't have to have occurred on Valentine's Day. Whatever it was, we all want to hear about it. All of mine involve some kind of food or booze or combination thereof. Tends to get messy later.

  1. I am not a romantical person. I am in it strictly for the sex. Guess I will sit this one out and read every one elses.

An ex boyfriend of mine took me out to eat, gave me a Fleetwood Mac CD, and then told me that he got tickets in Atlanta for the show and asked if I wanted to go. I was so excited. He was one of those that was super sweet, but there wasn't enough jerk in him, if that makes sense.

  3. Actually, I can't wait until VD is over, I am so sick of the diamond commercials I could puke.

  4. my answer is the same as the "best day ever" question.

ex boyfriend took me to a nature conservancy/park every other day all summer for a picnic when I busted my knee, couldn't drive and was relegated to surgery, bed, pain drugs and all around misery.

  5. This was quite a few years ago with my boyfriend at the time. He was the furthest thing from romantic, a real "guy's guy", and looking back, really quite selfish too.
But one day he knocked on my door with flowers in his hand, a limo out front, and took me on an all day long date, out to dinner, to the horse races ( I love them), and an all-around great day out. He went al out with flowers in the car, champagne, all that jazz.
It was really the most thought anyone has ever put into a date or gift for me.

  6. my guy took me on my supper break to "see a house" (we were part time realtors) - i was bitchin about how i had to eat before going back to work and didn't really want to see a house that another company already had listed. We got there and it was a mad house with dogs running every where....so i'm playing with these adorable puppies and waiting for him to get done whatever we were there for.....so i can leave and get to eat and go back to work.

When he tells me to pick out a puppy - cause thats why we were there.....we'd talked about getting a dog but it was a HUGE surprise and VIOLA that's how Teddy became part of our family..and she picked me not the other way around !!

Maybe not romantic to some but incredibly sweet to me

  7. My high school boyfriend wrote me a poem: "Eyes of blue that burn so bright, skin so fair of purest white, hair of dark and deepest night, a fire burns my soul. Emotions wild like oceans deep, by giving took my heart to keep, an angel haunts my restless sleep, a fire burns my soul."

  8. Lessee...first guy I ever fell in love with--senior year of college. I had to go home for the summer, and we were still in the 'honeymoon' phase of the relationship, so we were *not* happy about having to be separated for three months (I was coming back in the fall for grad school). I think he told me one day that he wanted to get me something to take w/me to remember him while I was gone. I wasn't sure what to say because I didn't know what to ask for--and really, I don't feel comfortable telling anyone (at any time) "Go buy me this." It's just not me. Anyway, he kept asking because he really wanted to do it; so I jokingly told him one day a purple penny (everyone has pennies lying around, and purple is my favorite color. Thus, conscience would be happy!) The day before I went home, he surprised me w/a water bottle for my bike w/purple painted pennies in it--one for every day I would be gone. He said I was supposed to get rid of each one--one a day--spend it,throw it away, whatever...and it would be a way for me to be close to him while I was gone.

Needless to say, I kept every darn one of those pennies. Nobody's ever given me a neater gift. Unfortunately after a year he dumped me for a girl he worked with...but the memory is still nice. (I think he ended up regretting it, though--but that's another story.) Funny how I still miss him on occasion--I guess you never really do forget your first love.

  9. Mine was two summers ago, My boyfriend made an incedible steak dinner on the grill, after we sat on the deck having some drinks and listening to Michael Buble. We went out into the middle of the yard where it was dark and danced together under the stars.

  11. Haven't posted for a LONG time, but I guess I'm back... (I've missed you all!)

When I was a senior in college, and my boyfriend was a junior, I got very, very sick and couldn't leave my room - high fever, chills, etc. Not only did my honey bring me food trays from the dorm we both lived in, but he actually went to the pharmacy and bought me sanitary napkins. Yup. Not a cute little, easily hidden box of tampons - couldn't use them, for some reason - but a big honkin' package of cotton ponies.

P.S. We'll be celebrating our 27th anniversary on May 1st.

  12. My boyfriend took me down to Columbus on his business trip, we ate at an incredible Tapas bar, went to a Blue Jackets game, bought some wine on the way home and then made a spectacular mess of the bed in the hotel we stayed in. He lasted way longer than I expected and wouldn't stop until we got complaints from the other guests. We went all out and needless to say, I was sore for a few days. The next morning we went down for breakfast and the elevator from our floor was full of pre-pubescent cheerleaders and their chaperones. There was a cheering convention in town and I'm sure that most of the complaints came from them. Oops!
What I want to know, though, is how they could afford a hotel that was almost $200 a night! I guess that they got more than their money's worth.

  13. almost everything we owned was destroyed in a house fire. my husband pulled a china cabinet out of the disgusting soggy, stinky, charred rubble. he took it apart and refinished the whole thing by hand. he knew how much it meant to me. it's the only family heirloom i have today.

My wedding day.....I really wanted to do the traditional something old/new/borrowed/blue and I had painstakingly organized everything. Well, we flew to NH for the wedding a few days before and after searching my luggage forvere I realized I'd forgotten my something old...I was very upset...crying...in retrospect probably a bit dramatic but at the time it seemed important...

Well the day fo the actual wedding I was getting ready and my husband's bro, who was the best man, came in the room and gave me a box from my husband...it a commerative spoon from Queen Elizabth II's wedding day (he'd found it months ago in a pawn shop in Chicago) My husband has bought it for me (I love the royals) as a gift not knowing that I'd end up forgetting my soemthing old and needing it...he saved the day! It was incredibly romantic....

  15. Another time was this great guy I met in Portland OR, a friend of a brother of a friend, and there was this instant attraction, the kind where it burns your heart to think about the two of you together (the one and only time I've ever had that feeling). I actually broke up with my boyfriend of three years (same one from the limo story) to go back down to Portland the following weekend to be with him.
In short, the BEST weekend of my (single) life. There was this undescribable heat between us, I will never forget it.
Mindblowing sex, incredible discussion, great food, we cooked for each other all weekend, we even crashed an outdoor wedding downtown and danced for hours together like there was no one else there.

I'd like to think of him as the one that got away. I've seen him once since then, but I'm married now. There was still the same intensity, but we both tried to ignore it.

  16. I met my current bf one summer about 3 weeks before he was leaving to go to Scotland to teacher's college for a year. Obviously with him going we'd decided it would be a casual thing. We had a great time together so after he'd gone we kept in touch. Emails turned into phone convos, which turned into long skype sessions and pretty soon we were talking on an almost daily basis. It's not easy trying to have a long distance relationship and that coupled with the stress of my job had me bouncing off the walls in frustration and heartache. I was at work on Valentine's Day and the receptionist called me to her desk. When i got there, there was a dozen roses and a card which contained a sarcastic love note (since we both really loathe Valentines day) which made me laugh till i snorted. It also had a gift certificate for a 1 1/2 hour much needed massage. He'd arranged all this from Scotland. He didn't get a friend here (Toronto)to do it, he did it himself. Even though that is pretty romantic, it's not the most romantic part for me. What is the most romantic is that he not only made the effort to get to know me from such a distance but he also made a commitment to me during that time. I went to visit him for vacation while he was there and we had a great time touring around Europe together. He came home the following summer and we've been together ever since. We just had an anniversary and he walked to my work in a snowstorm to surprise me with flowers and take me to lunch. Best guy on the planet, hands down.

  17. Sadly, none of my Valentines Days stand out in my mind. And I was with my husband for 12 years. However, I can say this. Last year was the first Valentine's Day since we split up and, although I had a boyfriend at the time, my ex called to tell me he got me something for Valentine's Day. When I met up with him, I was a little apprehensive. What he had gotten me was like a little care package with Sunflower Seeds, beef jerky, corn nuts, all the stuff I like to snack on, a tee shirt and a card from our cat just simply saying "Happy Valentine's Day". He actually did more for me than my boyfriend. My ex did not get the fucktard award last V-Day...but my boyfriend did.

  18. On my first date with my last boyfriend, I told him my favorite show was the Colbert Report...on our third date, and a small graduation gift, he got us two tickets to be in the audience for the show 2 months from our date, and a reservation for a romantic dinner afterwards.

... as romantic as the others, but surely very thoughtful

  19. Long before my fiance and I had started to date, he was doing his undergrad at Arizona State and I was in Michigan working on my degree. I had just broken up with a long term boyfriend and had actually spent valentines day with another guy but when I got back to my house my roommates were all freaking out about a huge box that had arrived while I was gone. In the box was one of my favorite movies that I hadn't been able to find at a movie store, 6 different kinds of organic chocolate, big bottles of fiji water, hippy gummie bears that are sour (they're AMAZING) and a handmade card all from him. He hasn't been able to top a Valentines day since, but I don't mind. :)

  20. Back story: I LOVE the fashion prints of Rene Gruau, so I bought a calendar that featured some of his best designs. One of my best friends is an awesome painter, so I asked her to paint one of the pieces on a large canvas for me. Her painting is one of my most prized possessions, so I held onto the calendar in hopes of her painting another for me in the future.

Romantic story: One day I casually mentioned to my boyfriend that I wanted Brit to paint me another piece from said calendar, so we got it out and started looking for possibilities. We both liked "Relax," so I planned on "hiring" Brit to paint me another. Well on my birthday last year, I came home to see a perfect rendition of "Relax" sitting in the bedroom. Turns out the boyfriend, who has NEVER painted before and has zero art background, painted it for me as my birthday gift. Every time I see it I can't help but smile and think about how lucky I am. But I'm kind screwed too, nothing I give him will ever compare to that :)

He wrote a book - had them printed up - enough for the whole club - and came in with boxes of them. The club still has one in their wine rack BTW. He then proceeded to read the entire story of how we met, and why he loved me. the last line of the book said:

Dijea said,"__________" THere wasn't a dry eye in the house.

  24. In 8th grade I had a huge, massive crush on a boy named Kyle. Our class went on a field trip to Mystic Seaport (CT) to learn about the slave trade. We had to sit in a tight group in the cargo hold of the reproduction of the Amistad. I was sitting next to Kyle. The facilitator had us look at the person sitting next to us. Kyle and I had to look at each other. The facilitator then said "One of you will die on the trip over from Africa. The other person will eat the dead body so that they don't starve." So gross. The weirdest field trip ever.

Anyways, as we're walking off the ship talking about how weird that was, Kyle tells me that he would never eat my dead body. Swoon. He continues that instead he would chop me up into tiny pieces and scatter me across the world so that wherever he was a piece of me would be with him. Swoon again.

So it was really creepy and weird but as a 14 year old girl it was clearly the most romantic thing anyone had ever said to me. Have definitely had more romantic experiences but will always remember this one.

  29. When I was in grad school, I also worked full-time as an addictions counselor. Since I have 4 dogs, I also owned a decent-sized house. Around finals time, I called my now-husband, whom I had not been dating for very long (Less than 6 months) to complain about how I didn't eben have time to clean my house properly. When I got home from class that night, there he was, scrubbing toilets and mopping floors.
He is also a lawyer. Damn right, I married him.

When I was nineteen, I met and dated my First Real Love. He quite literally swept me off of my feet and when I think of those days, I see it like a multicolored swirl of constant bliss. It was that kind of young and impetuous love that you can only have when you're old enough to do what you want, but not old enough to have serious responsibilities.

A few weeks before Valentines day, we were driving around town when he asked me what I wanted for Valentine's day. I was staring at the sky and blurted that all I wanted was to drink sparkling cider and make love to him on a cloud. I then laughed at how silly I was being and told him that whatever he did, I knew I'd love it. We didn't really talk about it after that, and I figured it was because I'd said something so stupid.

As Valentines day came nearer, he started acting very secretive. Finally, two days before Valentines, he called me up and told me that he was really sorry, but he wouldn't be able to give me my present until Saturday (the day after Valentines), and would I hate him if we postponed? I was a little disappointed, but told him it was fine. He lived a couple of hours away and had a class on Friday afternoon, so I couldn't really hold it against him. He then breathed a sigh of relief and told me to make sure I was dressed for something special by five o'clock on Saturday.

Five o'clock Saturday came, and he arrived with a blindfold in hand. I let him tie it on me and he led me to the car, where he joked about where we were going and teased me about my curiosity. About twenty minutes later, the car stopped and he helped me out of the car and through a door - still blindfolded. He sat me in a chair and told me to take it off. I was initially surprised to see myself sitting at his father's dining table (his father lived in the same city I did) with lit candles and a plate of chicken, rice, and vegetables in front of me. He sat down and shyly told me that his father's girlfriend had been giving him cooking lessons for weeks so he could make me dinner on his own! He also produced a lovingly decorated card in which he'd written me a very sweet poem all about how much he loved me and wished he could use my beauty to harness the clouds and... I completely melted. We proceeded to have a very pleasant (and tasty!) dinner. As we finished dessert, he gave a playful smile and asked me if I was ready for my present. I was completely surprised, because I'd assumed the dinner and poem were my present.

He took my hand and led me to the room he stayed in when visiting his father and told me to open the door. I did so, and was blown away by what I'd seen. Everything was covered in white tissue and cotton. There were bowls of dry ice in various spots with little whisps of vapor coming off of them, and a single red rose in the middle of the bed beside an ice bucket holding a bottle of sparkling cider.

He wrapped his arms around me, nuzzled my cheek with his nose and whispered, "I know it's not a real cloud, but I did my very best."

    :)

  35. Hard to pick, but I think this may be the most romantic simply because it was so sincere. I was dating a really hot guy in high school and we were going to the Homecoming dance together. I was the 10th grade princess and he wasn't much for dances, much less ones where we would get a lot of attention. He and a good friend of mine had their lunch hours at the same time (mine was an hour earlier), and he asked her if she would help him with his dancing as he didn't want to embarrass me. The two of them met every day right after they finished lunch and she taught him to dance for about two weeks. She never let on, but I complimented him after the dance and he said "Thank Summer; she is the one who has been coaching me." He confessed that he'd asked for her help (not easy on the ego of a big deal high school student) and she had been great. She not only taught him to dance, but went with him to buy a new suit and to pick out flowers for me. It was so kind of both of them that I think that may be my most romantic story.

  36. Years ago, when I was a wee lass of 18, I took a trip to Spain to visit my then-BF. I had never been on a trip so far from home and was nervous/excited the whole way. I was seated next to a guy a couple of years older, who had emigrated to the US from Uganda. He kept me entertained during the long flight and explained the turbulence, etc. He was very kind, but not in an "interested" way. We parted ways in Germany. I spent a month in Barcelona before making my way home, and guess who happens to be on flight from Germany to USA? Mr Uganda! He recognized me and said hello, but we weren't seated together this time. Right before the end of the flight, a Flight Attendant delivered a package from the on board duty free. I thought she had the wrong person (I was broke!) but she insisted it was for me. Inside was a lovely bottle of perfume and a note. It said "I will always treasure the memory of spending so many perfect hours with you. May fate place us in each other's path again." By the time I got off the plane and through Customs, he was gone. I still have the perfume and the note, but have never seen him again! Anyway, it felt more like a movie or novel than real life. I wish I could thank him for letting a young girl know there are romantics in the world.

  38. My hubby and I got married on Valentines Day 1998 in Wellington, New Zealand, which was a very windy day (not unusual in Windy Wellington!!)
We were greeting guests outside at the reception - across the road from the ocean - when all of a sudden, a huge gust of wind whipped my veil off my head and sent it flying across the road and over the rocks towards the ocean.
I wasn't going to go chasing it in my wedding dress and was resigned to having lost it, when my 300lb decidely unromantic hubby in his tuxedo dashed across the road and over the rocks to retrieve the veil for his new bride!!
Probably the sweetest thing he has ever done!

  42. I know it's cliched but it was when my now-husband proposed to me. We'd only known each other for 5months and had already decided to move back to Australia It was on the beach in Greece one night after dinner. It was very romantic as we were walking along and i turn around and he's not there... he was in fact down on one knee waving a diamond ring in my face. Unfortunately he was waving it right in front of my blind eye so at first i couldn't see it.. lol.. he asked if i would marry him and i finally saw the ring and started squealing (i get very excited easily!) and jumping up and down and said yes. I told him he'd been waving the ring in front of my blind eye and he said he'd wondered why it had taken me so long to notice it :)

It was just really lovely, we went back to our hotel had a bottle of bubbly and proceeded to fuck like rabbits :) The End.

i wrote him a note explaining all the gifts and cautioned him to be careful when eating the pie because there was something special in it. i told him if he chose to use it, the secret number was '2018'---he already knew what apartments i lived in.

  49. Well, mine actually entails my ex (and my eldest daughter's father whom I CAN'T STAND anymore) but it was pretty romantic...
We had gotten in a fight (nothing new) and I had left him and fled back home for a few weeks. When he finally convinced me to come back, he had laid out HUNDREDS of tealight candles making a path to the bedroom, lining around the bed, on the dressers, and leading to the bathroom where that as well was lined with tealights. He had filled our huge tub with bubble bath and had gotten me my favorite scented shower gel and lotion from Bath & Body Works (Night-Blooming Jasmine) and new silk nighties from Victoria's Secret.
As romantic as it was, our relationship didn't last too much longer. I ended up marrying his supervisor; we have two more children together and I've been the happiest I've ever been NEARLY TEN YEARS LATER!!!

  53. This is kind of embarrassing but here goes and remember I come from Australia.

My ex boyfriend loved watching the cricket and it so happened that a test match was televised on his birthday. He got ready with his beer and all to sit down and watch the telly only to find out that the television was broken! I'd never seen this guy cry before but that day he was very close to tears.
I decided without telling him to dress up in his cricket whites, tune the radio to the cricket and sat him down on a lawn chair in the back yard with his beer.
I then acted out the cricket match to the radio broadcast. Of course I was terrible, but he loved it and laughed all afternoon. He said it was the romantic thing a girl has ever done for him. Howzat?

  54. I could really care less about Valentines Day, because I think it is just so overrated and not necessary. But the only really good memory I have of that day is a middle school dance and finally getting to slow dance with the guy I had a crush on. To this day, as soon as I hear the song "Babe" by Styx, I am instantly back in middle school dancing with Ron. I always get a big smile on my face when I hear that song now.

  55. I can't decide what the sweetest thing anyone ever did for me would be. The most memorable romantic experience between someone else and me actually happened after we had broken up.
A few years ago, I was involved in a long-distance relationship with a guy from Alkmaar, Netherlands. We were together for few years, but I got cold feet and broke off the relationship. Of course, this was shortly after I booked tickets to spend some time with him over the summer.
I originally had the tickets changed to London to spend time with friends there instead, but I decided that it wouldn't hurt to see Jeroen one more time.
Instead of taking me sightseeing to all of the usual tourist destinations, Jeroen took me on a trip down memory lane. In Alkmaar, he took me to his local haunts. In Amsterdam, we walked to the home where he spent his early years, as he told me stories from his childhood.
Towards the end of the trip, we took a bike ride up to Bergen aan Zee, where he tried to pursue a career in the arts and where his father still had a studio.
The whole trip made me feel like I was meeting him again for the first time, and got me thisclose to reconciling with him. Close -- but no cigar.

The most romantic thing I ever did pales in comparison. When Jeroen was over here, we would often scour comic book stores looking for a special issue that would complete his collection (he claims to have learned "real" English from reading the comic books as a kid). After a month of diligent eBay-ing, I bid for and won a copy of the issue, and gave it to him for a birthday present.
He said it was the best gift he had ever received.
    (Sorry for the long post.)

  56. I had been seeing someone off and on for a couple of years. It was a very tempestuous relationship and I was crazy about him. During one of our "off" times, I went out with a co-worker for a short time. He was fully aware of the drama in my life, so it wasn't a serious thing. Well, VD rolls around...it's an "on" time (or so I think). I was working 3-11 pm at the time, so I got someone else to work for me that evening so we could go out. I was dressed and waiting for him by 6:30. At 11:30, I took off my makeup and got ready to go to bed. Around midnight, there was a knock at my door. Thinking it was "him", I ran to the door and opened it without looking to see who was there. It was my co-worker. He took one look at my red, tear-stained face, swore under his breath, handed my a bouquet of flowers from the grocery store down the street and said, "I knew that bastard was going to do this to you. Get dressed; we're going out. You deserve better than this."

Neither relationship went anywhere, but that is the most romantic thing anyone has ever done for me.

  57. When we were dating, DH took me to Paris for Valentine's Day weekend.

He also bought me a Christiane Kubrick painting for my birthday one year.

Sometimes he brings me mini Toblerone bars or Slim Jims on the way home.

    LOVE that man.

  58. My story isn't very romantic, but it's kind of funny. I was dating a guy and right before Valentines Day, we broke up. My Mother had just died and I was expecting her ashes from FedEx. One day I oppened the door and there was the FedEx guy with a box. I openned it and there was a round red tin. I thought this is funny thing to put ashes in. When I opened it, there were chocolate chip cookies. My first thought was, why did they bake Mother into cookies?

Of course, the cookies were from the ex with a sweet note asking me to save him a cookie. I did.

Oh yes, Mother came two days later.

  59. Stacy, beautiful story about the man from Uganda.

Thanks, everyone, for sharing your sweet and funny experiences! I got dumped by my fiancé on Valentine's Day, (he was a world-class tightwad, and I suppose he figured it would save him the expense of a Valentine's Day card) so I stopped looking forward to February 14 after that.

  60. Awesome stories, everyone.

The most romantic gesture done for me would require too much back story to explain it's significance.

So, I'll tell for this one. I was a very geeky 13 year old and had a huge crush on a very respected, popular and nice 17 year old guy. Well, all the girls adored this fellow. Everyone liked him. He was the kind of guy the girls wanted to be with and the guys wanted to be.

At a teen dance, I was being mercilessly teased by some bullies about my crush. I didn't have a chance with him - they knew it and were being cruel beyond belief about my shortcomings.

Someone had to have told the fellow (who I barely knew) because being the nice guy that he was, he came over and asked me to dance - in front of the bullies - just as a slow song started to play. It was one of the nicest things anyone has ever done - especially by someone who barely knew I existed before that moment.

Sadly, six months later he died while getting his pilot's license. I often wonder what he would have gone on to become if he'd lived.

  61. My boyfriend took me to the drive-in (one still exists in Tucson, AZ) on my birthday, where he willing sat through Sex & The City: The Movie. He also agreed to be the designated driver so that I could sip champagne. I was so broke when we first got together and we were dating long-distance. He bought me a laptop and mailed it to me as a surprise so we could easily keep in touch. We're getting married this summer!

Ms. - that's a sweet story and I'm sorry to hear how it ended!
