Mooshki - Movie Review - Star Trek

Since this screening was so early, they don’t want us to say much about it, so I’ll sum it up in three words: SO FREAKING GOOD!!! Okay, maybe a few more.

I was worried from the previews and commercials that it was going to be too much of an action movie. It wasn’t. There was humor, drama, romance, and yes, plenty of action with great special effects. Some of the group I was with were Star Trek fans and some weren’t, but everyone seemed to enjoy it equally. There’s some stuff guaranteed to piss off the hard-core Trekkies, but I thought they did a great job of staying true to the “heart and soul” of the series, including a couple of logical implausibilities, without which you wouldn’t really have a Star Trek plot. Even so, since this is a semi-reboot, you don’t need to have any prior Star Trek knowledge to get the movie.

As someone said afterward, “this is a much prettier cast.” It’s also a very talented cast, and they really captured the original characters while taking them in a new direction. And, sorry Shatner, but I can’t imagine any actor I would rather have had in this film than Leonard Nimoy. He was wonderful. And, although I’m a big fan of most of these actors and think they were all very good, (even Winona Ryder wasn’t that annoying!) Zachary Quinto was the star of the movie for me. Go Spock(s)!

Aaargh, there are so many things I want to say about the story, but I can’t. One funny thing -- J.J. Abrams pulled a certain concept straight out of Alias and plopped it right in the middle of his Star Trek movie. My friend found it distracting, but I was very amused.

I can’t wait for this to be released – I want to see it again NOW! Preferably on an IMAX screen. And I really hope they signed every single one of the actors to a multi-film contract. DN Scale: Well worth your ten bucks, maybe even a couple of times. Thanks so much to Vita.mn for the special screening!

  1. Cool! As of recently we actually DO have an Imax at our local theater so I'm gonna splurge and catch it there.
Not a Trekkie by any means, but the previews look compelling.

  2. Definitely do, McDooks. The scale of the space battles will be much more impressive on a very large screen.

  3. Squeee! I'm actually quite excited.

  4. I don't think they could have done a better job of casting. Zachary Quinto looks *exactly* like Leonard Nimoy did when he was young. So spooky! Thanks for the review; I totally want to see this in the theatre now!

  5. Mooshki--well said! :) Now I want to see it and I'm not even a real Star Trek fan but I saw the older movies when I was a kid!

  8. I wish we at CDAN could get together and do something like this - go see a premiere or something like that. Mooshki, if I lived near you I would love to go see a film with you..

Anyhoo, I started watching Star Trek when I was a kid. I can't wait for this film!

  9. MM, I love Zoe too, and she's absolutely gorgeous in it, of course. Really, I just keep going from actor to actor and thinking how good they all were. And they all clearly studied the original show quite a bit to get the mannerisms right. Eric Bana is pretty sexy as the bad guy, too.

  11. Wow, a movie where Winona Ryder isn't considered 'annoying.' It is a good day! Thanks for the review Moooshki but would it have killed you to mention Eric Bana???!!!

  12. I saw the previews in the theatre and I said "That looks so cool! I wanna see that!) My sister looked at me and started laughing. :-(

  13. Miss Mouse, the problem was, there were TOO MANY great actors in the movie to talk about! I did just comment above that he was really sexy. :) I mean, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Karl Urban, Zoe S.... where to begin? And even though I wasn't really familiar with him before, Anton Yelchin was adorable as Chekov.

Glad to see it was good. I was a little concerned after the lukewarm non-review over at The Hot Blog.

  15. DN-

I have to know. How did my boy, Simon Pegg, do as Scotty???

  16. Oh yes, GWG, Eric Bana.

  17. Tessa, Simon Pegg didn't appear until 80 minutes in. I thought that was probably for the best, because once he arrived, he stole the show. Aargh, again, don't want to give anything away, but they really gave him some funny stuff to do.

  18. Thanks, Mooshki! I'm looking forward to this movie very much. Thanks for the early thumbs up.

And Tessa, I loves me some Simon Pegg, too. "Sean of the Dead" was brilliant.

  19. DN, you had me worried for a sec, 'cause I'm not exactly a "critical" reviewer, but I checked and it's at 100% on the Tomatometer, so I know it wasn't just me. :)

  20. Yeah, a movie theatre is a great place to go during a flu outbreak.

  23. no kidding. You have to be an idiot to go into a movie theatre now. I really want some snot nosed teeny bopper sneezing in my popcorn and some hill jack coughing on the back of my neck.

    No thanks!

  24. It's the flu, people. Just the flu. Don't take your toddler or granny/gramps to the theater and you'll be fine.

  25. LOL @ Ror

  26. lol, the point is as a woman, i have zero interest....but nice review Moosh.

  27. oh, jax, for shame! captain kirk is, after all, the "cosmic womanizer".
and i was president of my high school sci-fi club in senior year, called IDIC (Infinite Diversities in Infinite Combinations. it's the symbol that spock often wore).
yes, i was a proud trekkie. not a trekker. but there are other sites for that argument.
the point is, your vagina should like this movie, i think. but i don't know it personally, so i don't really know.
other people should just quietly dry off their river-soaked guns and go home.

  28. Mooshki, thanks for the review! Worth the ten bucks, maybe even a couple of times? WOW!!!!! I can't WAIT to see this! I hear that the actor playing Bones KILLS it (I mean that in a good way)! And Spock prime shows up too .... aaaaaah too much excitement! Off to the Facebook fan page for me now.

  30. You'll have to tell me what you think, Majik. I'm curious how the hard-core fans will react to some of the changes.
