Your Turn

We did this topic a few months ago, and it is one of the very few I would bother repeating, just because I think answers change, more people come to the site, and it gets everyone in a damn good mood before the weekend. It is probably my favorite topic to discuss with people other than if you could only have one order of french fries ever for the rest of your life, from where would you order them? That isn't the question today, although you are free to answer it as well.

The reason I specifically brought the topic back is because the last time I spoke to someone about it, they told me that there is such a thing as shame Karaoke. Apparently this is not where failed American Idol contestants go to sing songs by Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton, but rather where one gets up in front of a crowd of people and sings those songs that you love so damn much but don't want anyone to know.

For example. I know all of you love Wilson Phillips. Don't deny that. Yeah, you might be the biggest damn Kanye fan in the world or think Metallica is the second coming, but when you hear "Hold On" you turn up the radio. Don't lie.

So, please list all of those secret songs you are afraid to admit you love. Also, feel free to link to YouTube so that everyone can click back and forth all weekend.

  1. Backstreet Boys: I Want It That Way (actually, several Backstreet Boys songs, but that one's probably the most embarrassing)

  2. Oops I did it again by Britney. I love a lot of Britney songs, actually. "Sometimes" is probably the most embarrassing one of the bunch that I love.

"Say you'll be there" by the Spice Girls.

And french fries--arby's curly fries. Amazing. Which is why I stay away.

I don't have any real guilty pleasure songs, because everyone who knows me knows my taste in music is fairly cracktastic. Most of my favorites are of the serious singer / songwirter or fucked up experimental artsy tracks, but I make no excuses for the Cher, the Clay Aiken, the Britney Spears, the ABBA - if liking a song means someone's going to think less of me, I could care less what they think in general.

I am, in fact, more likely to raise eyebrows with the artists I don't like. Tell most people you could care less for Neil Young / Rolling Stones / Nirvana / Elvis Presley and it's like you killed their puppy. :P

Girl You Know Its True by Milli Vanilli. I even tried to buy this on itunes but couldn't. My God. I should just crawl under my desk and die. But of course, there are more:

Mo Money Mo Problems--Diddy and the Notorious BIG

  36. Don Henley's "End of the Innocence"

  37. Terrance - good call on Framing Hanley's version. I hadn't heard it before but I just went to YouTube and it's awesome. I could do without the minute and a half of b.s. at the beginning though.

As for my guilty pleasure song: "Black Velvet," Alannah Myles.

    Yes.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Oh, and Don Henley's "Boys of Summer." I bought Ray-bans because of that song. I still wear the same pair, with prescription lenses now...

  65. Don't Talk To Strangers by Rick Springfield. Saw two of his concerts, one where I was so close I could have walked up and shook his hand. (He was in a dinky auditorium in Audubon, NJ.) I am actually trying tofind that sone for my ringtone..

Actually, what I am a leetle embarrased to admit is that I am a 46 yr old white woman who loooves hip-hop. And N-Sync.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Oh, and I am pointing and laughing at Jax for Songbird by Anne Murray. But then again, I love Cher's "Love and Understanding"..

    ReplyDelete
  67. Oh, OH! My WORST guilty pleasure is (don't throw anything) is, um, Britney Spears songs. NOT ALL OF THEM. Just..some of them.

    "I'm a slaaave...for you..."

    ReplyDelete
  68. Also love Hootie and the Blowfish! :)

    ReplyDelete
  69. I agree with so many of these that have already been listed.

Here are some of my current faves:
    Fernando by ABBA
    Puh-puh-puh-Poker Face by Lady Gaga

I also ALWAYS turn up the volume and sing along at the top of my lungs to that David Cook song...something about leaving the lights on. I know the song itself probably isn't that embarrassing to like, it's just the way I act when I'm singing along.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I forget I love it until I hear it and find myself singing to "Sweet Caroline" and I still have a Schoolgirl Crush on Rick Springfield and love most of his songs (there are many more than you would think). My husband has proved his love to me by getting us 2 tickets to see him at Casino Rama in July. Don't judge me lol

    ReplyDelete
  71. Kelly-I'm judging you and my judgment is that you're AWESOME! :)

  72. The Sign by Ace of Base
    Mmmm Bop by Hanson
    Shiney Shiney by Hayzee Fantayzee
Come Go With Me by Expose'

I fricken love "In the Ayer" by Flo Rida, which is only embarrassing for my kids since I'm 41 and do a little car dancing when it comes on the radio.

    ReplyDelete
  73. You guys know that Rick Springfield is going to be on a few episodes of Californication, basically playing himself, right?

    ReplyDelete
  74. Green Wave Girl:

Thank you I didn't notice your post until after I posted. I was starting to think I was the only one who would admit to being a fan now there are two of us lol. I have all of his cd's (I know but a friend of mine got them for me) and also really like Don't Talk To Strangers.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Mooshki:

No I didn't know that but thanks. I should get back into watching that show again I only watched the first season but really liked it.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Love Song by Tesla. I am mortified that I love it, but I do. Especially the long instrumental beginning. And I really didn't like Wilson Phillips. They are awful. Just awful.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Oh, and for french fries: Cedar Point's (it's an amusement park in Sandusky, OH) chili and fries are to die for.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Californication is filming here on campus (UCLA) as we speak!

    ReplyDelete
  79. GWG, you should hook up with Duchovny! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  81. Uh, Julie, just checking, but are you ME???

I too, love the man Flo-Rida..and hip hop.

Kills me really, because I am so white I'm translucent. I had to go and Urban Dictionary a LOT of phrases!!!

I think that is actually more embarrassing than my aforementioned love of Flo-Rida.

    ::hangs head in shame::

    ReplyDelete
  82. Even my 12 year old daughter hates her but...i love See You Again by Miley Cyrus. I love to embarrass her by cranking the tunes and singing it when her friends are around. Being a mom is fun!

  83. Pretty much anything by the Carpenters!

    ReplyDelete
  84. THANK YOU, CATHERINE!
anything karen c. sings, i can karaoke. i grew up singing to her, and my range is the same. after a couple of drinks i can still blow the mister away because i can do her dead on.
although when i was younger, julie andrews was my idol, and my dream was performing "my fair lady" (i came thisclose)!
barry manilow, because there's some actual music in there, chicago (oh, "our" song is "your my inspiration"), john denver, hell, anything i can find the harmony to.
my brother taught me a lot, singing wise, and i still go for anything with a good harmony.
the jimmy buffett thing? it's the fantasy in the music. "yes, i am a pirate- 200 years too late..."

    ReplyDelete

    now shhhh....dont tell anyone, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  87. What?! No Anonymous option tonight?

    Sheesh.

This is embarrassing coming from a Rage Against The Machine girl here in the modern age, but my song would be Bad Company's "Shooting Star" from around 1975, when I was all of 11 years old.

    "Don't you know..."

I can sing every word, and I belt it OUT.

"Course, I've never sung it at Karaoke, so who knows if I can sing the damn song or not...

    yeah, good times

    ReplyDelete
  93. Lyne- Don Henley's End of the Innocense...

    aaaaaaah you took me back

    I LOVE THAT SONG.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I catch worlds of grief at work because I use Pandora and the music I have programmed on my "station" causes a bunch of heads to turn.
To see me, you'd never expect that this 48 year old white redneck from Atlanta can (and usually does) sing along with Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and a number of other artists from the 40's, 50's and 60's.
Of course, the fact that I love to belt out a showtune too just goes to show that while I might have missed out on the hair cutting gene and the decorating gene, I more than made up for it in the showtunes gene.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Caroline and Wil - It's all good. Tesla's Love Song is AWESOME. And Ambrosia, I think I had their songs on my iPod like 5 different times because I kept adding them I liked them so much... :)

I think I love you - David Cassidy

I love a Rainy Night - Eddie Rabbit

BTW - you guys are embarrassed by the music that I brag that I listen to - John Denver, Neil Diamond, Babs, Carpenters, ABBA, Show Tunes, Def Leppard, B-52s

If they were a secret, the only music I could ever talk about woud be Amy Winehouse and She & Him!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  103. Well, the 80's are alive and well on my iPod. Not too much shame though. One song that I LOVE that no one else has mentioned yet is T'Pau "Heart and Soul". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJK7dMSd31k

    ReplyDelete
  104. Disney songs. Shit from Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Peter Pan etc. I grew up loving those movies and their songs, and today I am a complete dork and have no shame in still listening to them.

Also I'm a closet Marilyn Manson fan. His first three or four albums are awesome, anyway.

    Pretty odd combination, heh.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Mock if you must, but my favorite 80s song is "Make Me Lose Control" by Eric Carmen.

And I am never ashamed to karaoke. :)

  106. OK- after MUCH thought, and debating the fact of whether I even have ANY guilty pleasure or even the least bit of bad taste in music, I have concluded the following:

My biggest musical misstep is the purchase of NKOTB's "Face the Music" when I was 16. This was long after they "sucked." I didn't care. I proudly marched into the store and bought the disc and even kept it on my visor for all my friends to see. I had a convertible when I was a teen, and was quite open about playing it whenever I pleased....

    ReplyDelete
  107. Happy Birthday to Cindy!

I want this mp3 so badly:

  110. Most of the music I like would be considered shameful - 80's metal, 70's & 80's pop, disco but my main genre is classic & "alternative" rock, so here's my real shame list:

    Kanye West - Stronger
    Olivia Newton-John - Magic
Kenny Loggins - everything on my iPod

  114. A horrible, horrible secret of mine:

I LOVE "hot n cold" by Katy Perry. Whenever I discover a new song I like I replay it over and over all day. One time I listened to it on repeat ..12 times. I'm a little worn out on it now, but when I hear it, I will bop along, believe it.

I really wish the anonymous option was up lol.

My mother was a huge fan and the first lyrics I ever learned were to "Copacabana"--I was four. I can recite them to this day...and I'll never forget my little brother, who just couldn't figure the words at the beginning and used to sing:

"At the Copa, oh manna manna"

  118. Oh - songs that make me cry - 3 off the top of my head, all country songs:

Flies on the Butter by the Judds and There Goes My Life by Kenny Chesney. Embarrassing when you're at work listening on your iPod when someone asks you a question and you have to blink the tears away.

You Decorated My Life by Kenny Rogers is the third, but I'm not ashamed when I tear up because my uncle always used to sing that song to his nieces and nephews.
