Drea de Matteo Joins Desperate Housewives

According to Entertainment Weekly, Drea de Matteo is set to join the cast of Desperate Housewives. Guess what? Drea is going to play an Italian housewife. I know, I know, the stretch on her acting talent is going to be tough. Now, she is going to play the matriarch of her family which is more than she did on The Sopranos, but I wish they would have let her play someone besides an Italian housewife. I have seen her do that already. Not the married part so much, but the rest of it.

When I first read she was cast, I was hoping they would show some creativity and imagination. I think she is a great casting choice because she can cause trouble and be tough and at the same time be sexy. But, the imagination that led to the casting didn't stretch far enough to see her as anything other than what she has already played for years. Does Drea want to play the same roles for the rest of her career? She is too good of an actress to keep getting stereotyped like this. I will say that I am going to watch the first episode of the season. Do you think maybe she could order a hit on Eva's character?

  1. Well, if she's an actual housewife (married with kids) that could be interesting. I fear they'll just use her as another Edie. Either way, glad to see her on my screen.

  3. She is a good actor. I loved that movie where she was playing "rape" with her boyfriend and shot him. Classic!

  5. I was happy to see she's been added. She oughta spice up Wisteria Lane.

I just hope she was a kid, husband, boyfriend, or dog named "Christofuh" so I can hear her say that again.

  15. I had the same thoughts as Ent when I heard about this. Why add "Italian" to housewife?

I love this show. I think she'll really add something to it.

  16. Obviously, Hollywood doesn't think she has the talent to do anything else. She was great on The Sopranos because...she wasn't acting. She really IS a New Jersey bimbo.

  18. I loved, loved her in the Sopranos and Sons of Anarchy. I think she would rather not be stereotyped but is just happy to have a paycheck like most people these days.

  19. Sheis Italian, but originially from Queens, NY not Jersey, and is nothing like Adrianna or Joey's spinoff sister, the other 2 parts she has played. Maybe she'll be a RHONJ that moved to Wisteria Lane to "excape" her family who are "tick as teeves"?

  20. Bet she makes a mean "sangwitch". Sorry, couldn't resist. Work friends of mine used to riff off on their expressions.
