Last night at the Philadelphia Phillies game, a dad caught a home run ball. He was ecstatic and then he shared the ball with his daughter. She was ecstatic too and promptly threw the ball back to the field. Definitely worth 9 seconds of your time.
****Update - The first one got pulled. Here is another version which is actually better but is 27 seconds long. I can't believe MLB are being that a-holeyish about the entire thing. It is nine seconds and shows none of the game. They have taken a great father daughter moment and decided they wanted to control who saw it.

ReplyDeleteI've watched this about 4 times already. He's a great dad - my family's not into baseball, but I can't imagine my father OR my husband reacting so well under the circumstances.

Lian - generally when you catch a ball, especially a home run ball, you keep it. However, what the little girl did would be totally acceptable had the home run ball come from the opposing team - then you generally get heckled to throw it back.
ReplyDeleteIt was actually a foul ball, not a home run ball, but the clip was definitely really cute! I am a die-hard Phillies fan, and I've never caught a foul (or home run) ball before so I completely understood the dad's reaction!

ReplyDeleteYou are supposed to keep the balls hit into the stands. Even if you throw them back I don't think they would be allowed in play again. It is just a souvenir, and better yet if it was some milestone reached it is worth money.
One team's fans always throw back the opponents ball though and a lot of people individually do the same.

ReplyDeleteIn Chicago, we throw back home run balls hit by the opposing team. At least, that's the plan. You'll see the fans around the catcher egging him on to throw it back. Cubs fans do it for sure; White Sox fans, not so much.
So it is the Cubs that are the fanatics? I see how that helps win the championship.

ReplyDeleteI watched it on MLB.com...it is too cute! My son does something similar: when the Twins hit a homer we stand up and cheer, and when the other team hits a homer he (2 and 1/2) stands up and cheers as I red-faced try to shush him. :) kids + baseball + dome dogs = my favorite days

ReplyDeleteThe story behind this is really sweet too. The father has been going to Phillie's games since he was a young kid with his dad. Never caught a foul ball in the 20some years he has been going. So for him to catch that ball was a bid deal and for him to react that way to his daughter Emily throwing it back was priceless. Say what you want about us Philadelphia sports fans, we are not all that bad, unless of course, the teams or the refs or umps suck, or you are Santa Claus.
