Sex And The City The Teen Years aka Candace Bushnell Wants Some Twilight Money

I guess Candace Bushnell needed a couple of bucks because in April she is releasing a book called The Carrie Diaries. Yes, it is what you think it is. They are the diaries of Carrie Bradshaw. What you may not know is that the diaries were written when Carrie was a teenager. Oh think of the possibilities. Now there can be a whole television and movie franchise that involves teens and all their discretionary income. I mean the whole Twilight thing is going to end in the next two years and teen girls are going to need to find a new place to spend their money.

So, to me this sounds like a pure money making experience for Candace. I don't blame her, but I think she is cheapening her brand and the next thing you know there will be SATC lunch boxes. The only bright side I see is that Miley Cyrus will probably be too old to be in the movie or television show and there will be at least one if not both. Incidentally, SATC comes out one month after the book is released. Is this so parents can share the joy with their teenage daughters or will the same people going to see SATC2 be dying to know what Carrie was like as a teenager.

  1. Candace Bushnell is only proving herself to be a one trick pony. I guess if you do one thing well, just keep doing it. But it's hard to respect her as a writer when she obviously isn't doing it for the art.

  2. Unbelievable. She's turning into George Lucas now... We don't need an SATC prequel trilogy. I can't even believe they made another movie! The first one was great, they should just leave it at that. I'm over it. I even gave my pink velvet SATC box set to my sister. I'm done.

  3. I'm pretty sure the CW is going to want to pick this up as a show if it does well.

At some point, they'll need a new Gossip Girl.

I am pretty sure the brand was cheapened when they made the first movie. That is just my opinion :)

  5. I second that Faithy. I warmed up to it though and still went to the theater with my girlfriends... It was nice, but that's where it should have ended.

  7. LOL @ SATC lunchboxes! I WANT ONE!

But seriously - maybe SJP could play teenage Carrie's mother in the new "Carrie Diaries Teen Sex in the City" movie... Just THINK of the possibilities!

  8. Candace has always been a terrible writer. Her main achievement is a great title - "Sex and the City" - and I'm not even sure she wrote that. I followed the original columns in the New York Observer in the 1990s and they were barely literate.

Had it not been for Darren Star and his writers re-inventing the characters, both they and Candace would be long forgotten.

  10. I'll definitely see SATC II. I'm a sucker that way.

But I certainly wouldn't read the book, ack.

  15. i believe the proper term is 'diversifying the brand'. it totally is jumping the shark, but i guess since it's in the name of the almighty dollar, she's ok w/ it.

  16. The original SATC left me cold. I don't get how a bunch of shallow-yet-self-absorbed women could have struck a nerve with so many people. It's right up there with The Hills for me.
