America Young & I Talk About Brittany Murphy

Yesterday kind of sucked. Actually it really sucked. When I heard Brittany Murphy died I immediately wanted to kick her husband's ass. I really dislike the guy and in my opinion, and mine alone, I think she could have righted herself long ago if not for him.

The things that sucks about Brittany dying is that unlike some other people who have hit drugs hard in Hollywood and are still alive, Brittany actually had talent. She could actually act. Watch 8 Mile then watch Uptown Girls and then watch Spun and you can see the range she had. And for good measure listen to a few hundred episodes of King Of The Hill or watch Ramen Girl.

It sucks when anyone dies. It sucks even more when you know they had promise and a future and you were excited about them being clean and more big things from them. Brittany seemed to be trying to get straight. She would be fine for one movie and then lose it for the next. But, she was making progress. It used to be she couldn't get it together at all. One of the times she managed to pull it together in the past year was when she made the movie Abandoned which stars Brittany and Dean Cain.

Also in the movie is our very own America Young. America and I spoke about Brittany's death and her interactions with Brittany on the set. Here is what she had to say.

On the first day of shooting, Brittany took the time to walk around and introduce herself to everyone on the set. No one does that anymore. Right away it made everyone like her. This was the movie that Brittany had arranged for her husband to also be her makeup artist and so he was constantly there. Brittany loved this guy and he was always there for her and she treated him like her rock and her support. She never said anything bad about him and they never argued.

She showed up for work on time almost every day. She always knew all her lines and when she was performing everyone watched her. She was amazing. Everyone would always talk about her presence. Mimi Rogers raved over her and Dean Cain loved her. You could tell that when she was on she was very, very good.

She never threw one diva fit. This was a small budget movie but she never complained and never asked for anything unreasonable. There is one scene in the movie where an actor got really rough with her and threw her to the ground. It was way more than what was called for but, Brittany just got up from the ground and explained to the actor her boundaries in a calm manner and everything was fine.

She was one of the best actresses I have seen get to work in person and was incredibly nice to everyone and didn't just hide in her trailer when she wasn't shooting.

  1. That just confirms what everyone suspected, she was indeed a good person, but with lots of problems...

i really believed she would recover, but she didnt have the time....

  2. Again, RIP Brittany.
May you find the peace you need and deserve.

And if your husband or anyone else had a hand in your passing, I hope they 1)are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and 2)upon conviction, are sentenced to the deepest darkest pit for what remains of their life, and that after that life is over, they rot forever in Hell.

  3. Why didn't anyone say nice things like this about her when she was alive?

  4. I always liked Brittany and she came off as a very sweet girl who just needed to get back on the right track. I hope her husband rots in hell if he did anything to cause her death. My thoughts go out to her mother who seems to be a lovely woman. I also have to say I thought what Ashton said was truly touching.

  5. i think people DID say nice things, they were just so tired of seeing her on drugs... and thats what she seemed to be most of the time. (like the ferguson interview)

Problem was, the last years of her life were a mess, so that was the reason....but at her peak she seemed truly sweet and i cant remember hearing anything bad about her at the time....to be honest, people just pointed out her problematic life and strange choices.....

so i would say, that is why people are saying good things about her now, that she is gone....we just want to remember how she was...

  7. Regardless of whether this nice piece of information of her was said after she died, it was still nice hearing it. Thanks for that, Enty. Clueless is one of my all-time favorite movies, and it makes me sad to see that talent was squandered.

  8. Anyone know which drugs she was said to abuse?

  9. Dear, sweet Brittany. This is just too sad.

I shall always love her in "Just Married".

    Quite right.

Why people do drugs I'll never know - it just has no appeal for me - but if she did them, she didn't seem like some nasty, thoughtless dopehead who just wants to "party" her brains out.
She was a talented, hard-working, and by all accounts, really nice person who seems to have made some mistakes she never recovered from.

  10. She was talented.I noticed her back when she was just in very small roles. My guilty pleasure movie is Drop Dead Gorgeous!! I love when her character talks about her brother being Liza! I want to remember her like that. :)

  11. I think this sums it up, so sad:

On Twitter: Kathy Najimy, Brittany's co-star in the FOX animated series "King of The Hill" had a strong reaction.

"wrked w/& knew Brittany 4 14 years (& plyed her mom once as well) sweetst most talnted angel who got hked up w/ wrng people. we love u brit," Kathy reportedly wrote on Sunday.

"so sad this is truly a waste. feeling regret we didnt' do more. i love you so much Brittany and always will," she added.

  12. Ashton dumped her in a not nice way. I think his comments are just a bid to stay relevant.

  13. i was thinking that very same thing, sunny...

awww...thx enty, and thx america...so great to hear a first-hand acct...but wow, so she really loved the shady dude? =O

  14. Thanks Enty. Her death really seems wrong because it was so preventable.

I loved her in 8 Mile (Detroit girl, here) but I adored her in Clueless. And I've listened to her for hours in Happy Feet. That voice. But today, I keep hearing her voice say "El-in," from Clueless.

And any husband who doesn't want a tox screen and autopsy on his 32 year old dead wife is obviously not acting in the best interests of that wife.

  15. She was my favorite actress. I remember her from an episode of Sister Sister. She was talented. There was something quirky & natural about her that really appealed to me. May she rest in peace & my condolences to the family.

  16. Thanks, Enty & America. I was hopeful for her when she was making 'Abandoned' - it sounded like she was back on track. Then when she got fired from her last movie, and with what happened with her husband on the flight, I figured she was losing it again, but I really hoped she'd pull herself back up. So sad.

Thank you .. EL. I got ripped on for expressing the same thing yesterday. But ... I think she would still be here if that guy was no longer in her life. I have this horrible feeling he kept her high to keep her with him. I might be wrong .. but I have seen it before and I just think that might explain this svengali (sp??) hold this dude had on her.

This death is still just upsetting me to no end. Lovely young lady with promise who slid into death .. and I am blaming him.

  18. re: her breakup with Ashton Kutcher

i loved when she was on Letterman (i think, or Leno) shortly after he started dating Demi Moore and was asked what she thought about that relationship and she said:

"i think the crux of their relationship is that, to him, age doesn't matter and, to her, size doesn't matter."

BWAHAHAHA! i thought that was hilarious and she was able to say that in such a jokey, fun loving kinda way.

it wasn't malicious, it was just a damned good joke.

  19. it's great of America Young to put these kind words out there about Brittany since there will be a lot of crap and useless rumours that others will say in the coming months.

as i said in a previous post, my brief experience of her was similar. she was a genuine sweetheart to her core and treated everyone the same whether you were the director, a grip or the craft service person. sadly, that's pretty rare with actors.

i worked in the production office and after about a week whenever she would call she would know the name of whoever answered the phone. the first thing out of her mouth would always be "Hi _____. How are you today?" and she would actually want to know.

she was definitely a diamond in the rough....

  20. You pretty much confirmed that when I get home I'm going to have a good cry over her again, Enty. What a genuinely nice person. Such a rarity nowadays. And this is juxtaposed with an article on two wastes of space. It almost makes you think there's no fairness in the world.

  21. Awwww. I am really so sad about it all. :( She really was a talented actress.

America, you answered Enty's blind about her hubby being hired as her makeup artist.

  22. ITA with what Enty and Wil said.

I'm guessing that she wasn't doing illegal drugs like heroin or cocaine. I think she died from anorexica and painkillers. =[

  23. Thanks for sharing this, Enty and America. She will be missed.

  24. sunny and pookie-
did you see the blind item that blingossip.com revealed to be about her anorexia? it talked about her bf (ashton) comparing her to other starlets and telling her she wasn't skinny enough..that in conjunction with january jones' comments about ashton being an unsupportive dick who told her she was talentless has made me lose all respect for him. what a prick. i know twitter is prevalent in today technology laden world, but still..call your publicist and issue a real statement if you cared so much for her...or a least spell out whole words. his use of "2day" really irked me.

    ReplyDelete
  25. @ katespades - yes that was the one I was talking about. I had forgotten his nasty comments to January Jones. Double douche.

    ReplyDelete
  26. ... Her "breakup" w/ Ashton was because She was TWO-TIMING him w/ *that cRapper CRETIN aka "Em"ma face-fulla ANU$*... after which She said publicly, "Now I can have *sex* with whoever I want". Obviously She 'NEVER' GOT OVER *the CRETIN*... and *he* DUMPED Her in THE WORST "way". I think *"Em" is* 'JUST' as RESPONSIBLE for Her downfall as MUCH AS BOTH *KOKE-headed J.KWATinetz and SKUM-jacka$$* "are".

... She was ANOREXIC LONG-BEFORE She met Ashton. She started drastically losing weight in January 2000 right after She first went "blonde". She got WORSE after *"Em"* DUMPED Her and started doing more *drugs*... and if Ashton really did make that rude *comment* to Her... he probably 'JUST' made Her E.D. WORSE.

  27. katespades, wow...thank you for clueing me in on that...i haven't been over to that site in ages. eeep. ashton is quickly buying himself a one-way ticket to doucheachussetts.

  28. Thank you Enty and America. She always seemed like a sweet person. It is a shame that she never could help herself stay clean. The men she hooked up with didn't seem the best for her either.

Ashton's words about her irked the hell out of me. He is such an Asshat.

Doubledouche-- I love Deb too! She is my idol!

Sorry to depart from the topic but that honestly made me laugh in the midst of such grimness.

And ENTY any chance we can remove some of the bloggers here with the pix that are um not what i want to look at while eating or working (referring to previous BM RIP post)

  30. Sadly we are the end result of our choices.
Whether that be the company we keep, the food we choose to not eat or the drugs we take.
In the end it is a result of an adult making choices.

RIP pretty girl. You really did outshine the others your age.

  32. Thank you for your heartfelt, first-person observations/thoughts re: Brittany Murphy, America. Although I'm an admitted(-ly mbarrassed) consumer of celebrity gossip, I usually don't take their ups & downs too personally. I tend to invest my emotions in the lives of people I actually KNOW. (There's plenty of drama/sadness to be found there, too, unfortunately.)

Still, Brittany was one of the very few actors/celebrities who inspired an inexplicable sense of warmth, empathy and "fondness" in me. I don't know why, really. There was just this sweet, beautiful, vulnerability about her that made me want to root for her. I'd always hoped/believed that she would overcome her "issues" and find true happiness and success one day.

Enough said.... :( Thank you again for your comments. I look forward to seeing her again (and you) when "Abandoned" is released.

[P.S. To end this on an entirely inappropriate & shallow note - I LOVE the new 'do, America!]

  33. What's with all of this blaming the husband? What evidence do you really have. In the end, no-one but Brittany took those drugs and had image issues. Is he just a convenient fall guy.

And if Brittany was anorexic, then you'd have to say that almost all Hollywood and TV women are anorexic.
