Erica "Rikki" Mongeon In A Coma

In something very reminiscent of Natasha Richardson, Rikki Mongeon is an induced coma. Yesterday she and her twin sister who starred in Double Shot Of Love were hit by a semi. Both the driver and Vikki were ok. Everyone thought Rikki was ok too. She said she was fine but did have a bump on her head. Lucky for her, everyone decided she needed to go to the hospital. At the hospital, the doctors discovered she had bleeding in her skull so they put her into a coma. Rikki is in guarded condition, but it could have been so much worse if she had not gone to the hospital. I hope she pulls through ok.

  1. Head injury is terrible. She will be brain damaged at the least. My husband had a stroke 5 years ago from sinus medication (Rx). The damage he has is in the Executive function portion of his brain (memory etc). He had to learn to walk, talk, read etc again.

Anyway is you start having the worst headache you have ever had, sluring or forgetting the names of objects or words, or a limb goes unusable-dial 911 and tell them you think you are having a stroke.

The receptionist in our office had twin girls about a year ago. She was 32. Shortly after coming back to work, she began having trouble with remembering things, getting names mixed up, and she was unhappy all the time. Her mouth was drawn down on one side. I thought at the time that she had stroke symptoms but her doctor decided it was a medication she was on to increase breast milk, and took her off the meds. About six months later she started having the same problems, and this time they did tests and she had, indeed, had two strokes. At 30-freaking-2! She has some minor brain damage, and has been depressed ever since. You are right, Katja - it can happen to anyone and it's never something to mess around with.

I hope this girl recovers, though, I really do.

  3. I don't know who they are but I hope she pulls through okay. I am glad they decided to take her to the hospital. You can never be too careful with brain injuries.

  4. It's tempting to fear the worse with head injuries. My father suffered a severe stroke a few years ago from a blood clot in his brain. He's 61 now and is being cared for in a nursing home. However, a friend of the family suffered a head injury after some heavy equipment he was stocking a warehouse he was working at collapsed on top of him, and he is fine today aside from some slurred speech. It's likely she won't be a 100% like she was before, at least in the short term, but hopefully they caught it in time before there is too much lasting damage.

  5. That is too bad, but I'm sure she will be fine. Sounds like they want to to bring out of her medically induced coma tomorrow. She is lucky that she got treatment early on.

  6. Katja, I hope you sued the ass off the sinus product company. That's one major stroke to have at a younger age.

Rikki is young and healthy. If she got help soon enough, she'll probably be fine. I have a friend who was in a similar situation. She's good as new now.

  7. @Melody- we couldn't do a thing b/c pseudoephedrine was the alternative drug cited in all of the ephedra class action suits. It is basicly off the market now since it is what is used to make meth. (How are they still making it??)

Anyway the Dr.'s @ Harborview/U.Wa. said (and documented in his file) that the cause was the Rx- AND that it was not an unusual result of taking it.

  9. Pseudoephedrine is still on the market and readily available in the US if you're willing to hand over a government-issued piece of identification. If someone has high blood pressure it not recommended they take PSE for whatever symptoms they are trying to treat. That's why you ask a pharmacist and if the pharmacist is smart they will ask you if you have HBP.
