What Do You Think?

The casting decision of Katie Holmes to play Jackie Kennedy is a tough one in my mind. It is television and it is a mini-series and I don't think Jackie is the focus of the series. Is Katie Holmes a good choice to play Jackie? Well, if you need her to be brooding and silent, then I think Katie will be perfect. If you need her to show any kind of emotion over a John F Kennedy affair you are probably out of luck. Ditto for tears after the assassination.

I think she can be made to look like Jackie and I think much of what she does everyday of her life is similar to what Jackie had to go through in her own life. I think Katie can relate to that. As bad as she has been lately in anything she has come near, I don't think this is the worst casting choice of all time.

I do feel sorry for Greg Kinnear who is going to play John F. Kennedy. One movie with Miley Cyrus followed by another with Katie Holmes.

  1. Is this the project that Tom Hanks is developing?

  2. I think this a terrible casting choice. I don't think she can pull off Jackie's diction. Poor Greg, what has he done to deserve this?

  3. Isn't Greg Kinnear as JFK a bit of a gamble, too? If this does become a success, it could be a career-changer for both actors. Of course, if it is a flop, it could also become a career-changer, only in more of a "Would you like fries with that?" kind of way.

  4. I think she may do quite well. There was a movie she was in BT (Before Tom) and she was good. But I can't remember the name.

  5. i think i addressed this on my blog last year about Tommy turning her into Jackie for his own sick ways, but methinks this is all part of the plan.

she is a SHITE actress! the horror!

  6. Katie Holmes playing a woman in a high profile marriage of convenience?

She could do it with her eyes closed and both arms tied behind her back.

  7. I actually think she's a great choice to play this role.

    ReplyDelete
  8. And I'll watch that show if it's ever broadcast here.

  9. I don't care if she can relate to the situation, she has an annoying mouth movement, she just moves half of her mouth and it's the same thing with her smile.

  10. I don't think she can pull this offer. IMO, her abilities are limited and the only reason she continues to get work or attention is that fact she is Mrs Cruise.

Yes, poor Greg. And worse than "would you like fries with that" would be being involved in Kate Gosslin's new show.

  11. JACKIE KENNEDY WAS A VERY CONTROLLED PERSON...KATIE SHOULD BE FINE...SHE LOOKS FROZEN MOST OF THE TIME, THE SMALL VOICE AND LONG ISLAND ELITE ACCENT IS ANOTHER THING...

  12. This mini-series will suck hard, although I'm having a hard time deciding on better casting. I'm thinking maybe Natalie Portman could pull it off.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I thought Katie was EXCELLENT in "Thank You For Smoking" I think its a good choice.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Portman would consider a mini-series to be below her. Not that it would necessarily be a good career move.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Good call, Cheryl, Portman would be good as Jackie.

I think Katie is better suited to TV than movies, frankly. She just doesn't have that movie-star spark or talent.

What I found stranger than the Kinnear/Holmes choices was Barry Pepper as Robert K?! I love me some Barry Pepper, but his features are WAY too distinct to pull off Robert Kennedy!

  16. didn't kate and greg star in another movie with Cate Blanchett..i'm too lazy to look it up, but i think keanu was in it too

  17. I have never heard of Katie Holmes being considered a bad actress.

I never watched Dawson's Creek, but I saw her in "Go", "The Ice Storm", "The Gift" and "Thank You For Smoking", and she was good in all of those films. Very good.

She does have a wonky mouth and crooked teeth.
Meanwhile, Jackie Kennedy had eyes so far apart she could keep watch over starboard and port.

Nobody's physically perfect, and fictional portrayals of real people are rarely done with similar looking actors.

    ReplyDelete
  18. FYI folks, Katie's "wonky" half smile is due to a condition called "Bell's Palsy"...it's not an affectation that she chooses to have.

That being said, no--bad casting choice.

I don't think it's necessary for the actor to look like the personality they are portraying. Makeup can do a lot, and it's the mannerisms and speaking that portrays the character. Reese Witherspoon looks nothing like June Carter Cash, and Sissy Spacek looks nothing like Loretta Lynn, but both carried off the parts really well. I don't think it's that bad a casting choice.

  20. I tend to reserve judgment on these things until after the film is released and I see it myself. I remember the uproar over Renee Zellweger being cast as Bridget Jones, and I thought she nailed the part. So, Katie Holmes may be really superb. Who knows?

Honestly, the topic of JFK and Jackie O bores me half to death. I mean, hasn't this been done and done and done. Can our country be fixated on something else, please? Plus, I get my 60s fix with Mad Men, which is pure genius, IMHO.

  21. you're all quoting movies made Pre-Tom.those were good. now she is a ghost with no substance and fucking vacant behind the eyes.

Why do we need to see another Jackie O movie? What new information are they bringing into the movie that we haven't seen before?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yep, Jax is right. All her good films, for her, were pre Thomasina and thus is null and void as an argument for her talents.

I said it on DListed yesterday, he's simply brought her the role.

  24. @Majik, Bell's Palsy is temporary. Never permanent. (I know, I had it.)

Katie couldn't be more annoying than Jackie. That video of her doing the tour of the Christmas decorations in the White House, ACK, wanted to reach through the screen and shake her, and tell her to talk like a grown-up already!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think Rachel Weisz will do a better job in that movie she's doing about Jackie. Even though she isn't American.

I just can't stand how Katie talks out of the side of her mouth. I do the same thing when I don't want people to know I have bad breath.

    ReplyDelete
  26. that casting choice is a little odd, but i can live w/ it...weirder still is greg k. as jfk. that's bring out an uh, wth? from me.

  27. not sure the timespan, but Mariska Hargitay would RULE as Jackie O.

  28. She's be perfect if she had her old nose.

  29. "If you need her to show any kind of emotion over a John F Kennedy affair you are probably out of luck. Ditto for tears after the assassination."

Maybe we aren't seeing the same Jackie, but when exactly did she show any kind of emotion? It's like her face was Botoxed before there was Botox. Like Shazzzaba said -- Jackie was a very controlled person. If anything, Katie might come off too cutesy and animated.

  30. HOWEVER, yeah, the crawling over the back of the limo was pretty emotional, I'll give Jackie that. If they recreate that scene, perhaps Katie could channel fantasies of crawling away from Tommy?

  32. Mazemerizing, she would have had to be made of wax not to want to get away when she was getting shot at and seen her husband's head have chunks blown out of it.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Also, I don't think Katie's talent has gone since Cruise.

Whatever is going on in her personal life, having a professional project that excites her is something that could bring her joy and some spark back into her.

    I wish her well.

  34. All of those quakes happening recently, they were the result of the Kennedy's rolling the hell over in their graves.
Cannot picture her being in the film, but, who knows. She could have played Caroline's roll.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Since when has Katie been diagnosed with Bell's Palsy? I thought she just had the same thing wrong with her as Alicia Silverstone--a fucking annoying way of talking. I can't watch her because of it, so no, I won't be watching that movie.

Oh, and I do a perfect impression of her :D

  36. I think if you liked Jackie Kennedy, this is as terrible as when Katie tried to sing and dance on that other tv show (sorry, it was so horrendous, I only recall the cat-in-a-blender sound, smug-beyond-words smirk and coordination of a donkey on stilts, trying to dance). Katie can't act her way out of a paper bag, and Tommy Girl is doing her no favors by buying her roles ill-suited for her insipid side-talking droning. It accentuates her lack of talent and personality and makes people dislike her more and more for having such an inflated and ignorant ego. Sorry, I have no respect or sympathy for this girl.

  37. I agree with Jax. Katie wasn't a bad actress before Tom but now she is just god awful. That last movie she did with Diane Keaton, Queen Latifah, and Ted Danson about the employees robbing the bank of money that was supposed to be shredded was horrible. The movie wasn't great but I couldn't help but notice that her acting was now, just embarrassing.

I can't tell you what part would be good for her but I do know that I don't look forward to seeing act in anything anytime soon.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Oops! I meant "seeing her act in"

  39. don't compare jackie to katie. jackie loved her husband, regardless of his infidelities. she was a beautiful first lady. she was a valuable asset in foreign affairs. she was cultured, educated and intelligent. she was a wonderful mother. her children showed that. she was the face of a grieving nation after jack's murder. she was a national treasure.

i find the comparison offensive. it's like comparing air and stone. one has substance. the other does not.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I don't know about this one. Katie doesn't have the skills to accurately portray a muppet, let alone a historical figure. Poor Tommy, if only he could have found an obedient, compliant wife with acting skills equal to his own amazing ones. He must shake his head and wonder why all that auditing isn't working.

  41. Bloody hell the Kennedy's are boring. Move on already. Like a movie about the Queen, if it doesn't have Dame Miren in it, it's going to be dull as shite.

Shmooey said: "Jackie Kennedy had eyes so far apart she could keep watch over starboard and port."

    So. Bloody. Funny!

  42. Nancer - You captured the essence of why this is so bad... and why Jackie was so important. Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  43. She def. has the look....the acting? I'm not sure.

"..now she is a ghost with no substance and f***ing vacant behind the eyes."
    haha

Agree with others on this being overdone.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Gretchen...Bell's Palsy can be permanent. Jean Chretien, Milo Ventimiglio, Nancy from Sewing with Nancy...they all have a Bell's Palsy...it's not always temporary.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I think that Tom bought her this part - how will she be able to carry this role? Yes, anything post-TC is eyeball singeing. I understand some of the people behind the movie have some serious right-wing affinities and that the Kennedys biographer has completely dismissed this project.

I know I will NOT be watching it - even though I do like Greg Kinnear. The History Channel is just a joke.

    ReplyDelete
  46. yep katie could act before tom - thank you for smoking was her last good movie - i hope she gets her soul back in the divorce.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Katie is such a weak actress, this is going to be hard to pull off, Jackie was so iconic, Jeanne Triplethorne from Big Love played Jackie brilliantly in Grey Gardens. I just don't believe Katie has the skill to pull Jackie off, but then that's why she married Tom. He helped Nicole, Penny to get to the levels they are at, but both women have real talent, Katie no so much.

    ReplyDelete
  48. All the Kennedy haters can go straight to hell. Instead of running around like Paris Hilton and the other idle rich they sacrificed more for this country than most people can even fathom. And I read flippant, asshat comments here about them. Fuck you. Jackie had more class and grace in her smallest fart than the hefers dissing her in the comments will ever hope to have. And that being said, no, Katie Holmes shouldn't play Jackie. Who knows, she might surprise us.

    ReplyDelete
  49. My first thought was... wow who's d!ck did Tommy Boy have to $uck to get her this? Ugh

    ReplyDelete
  50. I did actually laugh out loud at this: "I do feel sorry for Greg Kinnear who is going to play John F. Kennedy. One movie with Miley Cyrus followed by another with Katie Holmes."

    ReplyDelete
  51. I'm with P.S. and Nancer. IMO Katie Holmes is extremely untalented and unattractive. Who in God's name was in charge of casting? Jackie Kennedy Onassis was beautiful, cultured, refined etc. This is going to be a nightmare.
