What Is Patrick Dempsey Thinking?

Patrick Dempsey does not make many career missteps, but I think this is a big one. He has signed on for Transformers 3. Never, ever, ever sign up for that third movie. Now, I am not counting James Bond movies in this discussion because they are their own separate entity and aren't based on an action figure. Ditto Harry Potter. You think that 3rd Twilight is going to be good? Did you see the first two?

Think to yourself of a franchise that has had a third part. The third part is almost always the worst installment. Does Sofia Coppola in Godfather 3 ring a bell? Police Academy 3? American Pie 3? Fast & The Furious 3? Home Alone 3? Jaws 3? Rocky 3? That one was actually not that bad. Usually actors are on the hook for the first two, but after that they can move on.

By the third installment, writers are different, the story ideas are gone and maybe a new team of writers is brought in. The producers figure there is a built in audience so they don't have to try very hard. And it shows. I have no idea what Patrick is doing. Maybe it is the huge paycheck or the chance to be in a potentially big summer movie for his kids. The movie will make $100M but it will be a sad remnant of the first one. As bad as the second one was, the third one will be worse. It always is.

  3. Twilight will never be good cause it is one of the most poorly written pieces of shit I've ever been unfortunate enough to read. And that is the truth.

I don't care about Patrick Dempsey and Transformers. I care about using HP and Twilight in the same sentence. :|

  6. Heh... I haven't even been bothered to see the first two Transformers movies... not even the Rifftrax versions. Rifftrax notwithstanding, I think I'll continue in that vein.

  7. Terminator 3. Enough said.

I have to admit his prettiness, but FFF forever ruined my ideas of him seeming sexy. His is probably the only FFF picture I ever regret seeing.

@Sue Ellen - I have not even been able to get through the first Twilight movie and won't even try to watch the rest.

  9. @jax lol! Jaws 3D was kick ass cause it was personal that time.

I could nevwer watch any of the movies. Having to read the first book as a course requirement was enough for me. It's awful.

  11. They were able to fix the Batman movies eventually.

  12. Boriqua beat me to it . T3 was the WORST.

I think Patrick is trying to ease his way out of television. But with action??

  13. c'mon Bourne Ultimatum was good..right....?

  14. @MontanaMarriott I think "Revenge of the Sith" and "Attack of the clones" were the worst.

As for Twilight, well it wasn't good to begin with so why should it be different? I think it's a bad decision, he's McDreammy he should do chick flicks or drama, what's next? ... a Wayans brothers movie?

@Sue Ellen - I sort of enjoyed the first book because it was a different take on vampires, and I used to live in the Pacific Northwest so the "place" parts of it interested me. I did read the other three, but it got to be hard going before I was done.

Check out this site: http://community.livejournal.com/m15m/19551.html. This girl, Cleolinda Jones, does Movies in 15 Minutes and her take on Twilight is hysterical.

  16. I wish you hadn't even brought up the Godfather Part III. That was unforgivable. My sister and I cheered when Sofia Coppola's character died - that is how bad she was.

  17. OMG! I had to look up that FFF because I wasn't around at that time. Uh!!!! Where did his peepee go?!?

*for anyone else looking for it, just keep clicking "older posts" under the FFF tag until you see wangs everywhere. Apparently in the olden days, Enty didn't make you click on the link, he just had it all hanging out. Literally.

That break down of Twilight was hilarious. I'd rather read that over and over again than watch the movie.

You know what bothered me the most about the book I read? There were grammatical errors. :( It's a book that was published with errors? What does that teach people? I'm a stickler, sorry.

If any of you are Facebook friends with Enty, he has a link to FFF on his page...

  20. I'm sorry Enty but BOTH the Transformer movies were horrible, unintelligible action B-movie trash.

Michael Bay is great at action and that's about all. There are so many writers on these things that none of the characters have any dialogue that sounds consistently like the same person is talking. Stupid non-story, a lot of wasted money in a blow-out the stops budget. Bad, bad bad everything that's bad about American movies.

    So Transformers Three? Yikes.

The only legacy of the Transformers movies is the ubiquitous presence of Megan Fox.

  21. chihuahuense - how do you get to the FFF tag?
    Thanks!

  22. I was at my brother's house and picked up a copy of Twilight my niece was reading to see what all the hype was about--good God! After a page and a half, I had to put it down because I felt as if I was reading a really badly written high school English composition. "How did this even get published?" I wondered, and figure that this is now what masquerades as "popular literature." My sympathies to the teachers who have to deal with this on a daily basis.

  23. Alien 3. Ugh! Transformers 2 was a piece of *$#@, 3 is going to be awful. But I'd sure as hell do it for the multi-million paycheck he's probably getting! I don't think he's ever going to have a George Clooney kind of career, so he might as well get the dough where he can.

  24. Ugh, I couldn't even DRINK Transformers 2 watchable...I quit after the first 30 minutes to avoid alcohol poisoning!

Wouldn't watch 3 if they promised PD naked...which thanks to FFF I already know isn't the draw a lot of people would think it is, LOL!

  25. Have heard he fancies himself a movie star who took a break for TV. Whatever. What he should be thinking is how lucky he is to have good hair. That full head of locks is the reason he got a 47th chance.

BTW, to all you CDAN members... I really appreciate your smarts, snarks and observations. Am buried in deadlines this week and am only getting light moments because of you. Thank you!!!

  26. re fff: on the left hand side of the page there is a white drop down box, that says "select a label" select fff or full frontal friday, and then when that loads scroll to the bottom and select "older posts" for a while. It was way back.

  27. He might be thinking of past success. Patrick was in Scream 3, which is one of my favourite films, and I liked his character, but that was a trilogy (and a d**n well written one at that) not an action series. Frankly I've lived this long without seeing either Transformers because I prefer to keep my youthful memories of the animated film safe and treasured!

  28. The third Indiana Jones was the BEST, but of course Sean Connery makes everything awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Mission Impossible 3 was bar far the best of the franchise. Other than that, I cant think of any others where the 3rd was any good at all.

  30. He's being pragmatic. Grey's was a lucky fluke and it has peaked. "Made of Honor," his starring big-screen return, was kind of "meh." He's in his late '40s. He's not Brad Pitt or George Clooney. He's going for the big payday. Very smart financial move and nobody is going to blame the anticipated "suckiness" of T3 on him.

  32. I used to think Return of the Jedi was bad. Then George Lucas made the prequels, and showed us all what "bad" really is.

  33. They made a Home Alone 3??????????!!!!!!

@Syko - That link was HYSTERICAL. I was laughing my ass off. I loved her take on the "meadow" scene b/c I felt the same way while reading it. i had to go and see what she thought of Renesmee too b/c that was another Twilight hate moment for me.
