Another don't look me in the eyes film set experience. Unlike yesterday when our actress indicated she didn't like don't look me in the eye notices, this former A list action actor and Academy Award nominee/winner who is now a struggling B- list loves having the don't talk to me and don't look me in the eye notices put up on set. During the most recent movie he filmed, the notices went up and a crew member said, "I don't think anyone has to worry about looking him in the eye because he is o damn short." After that remark, random crew members would point to the notices when the actor was around and everyone would start laughing. The actor had no idea the entire time that everyone was laughing at him.

ReplyDeleteI was at Staples Center a few years ago at a Lakers game and witnessed Stallone and Andy Garcia greet each other. Stallone is practically a fucking midget. Garcia by contrast was tall and strapping, yum.
ReplyDeleteThis makes me wonder if some of the bitchy/asshole-y reps of some actors are created/magnified by these messages. I can understand if producers put up the signs to keep extras from rushing to the actors and taking up time by socializing. I can also see people creating gossip by pointing out those signs as part of the star's idea, whether true or not.
ReplyDeleteMy husband met him one time and said that he was taller than him ;) My husband is an inch shorter than me, so I would love to meet him with heels and tower over him. Hey! Maybe that's why you never see "fan pictures" with him :)

ReplyDeleteAndy Garcia is about 5'6". I was standing so close to him once that his hand brushed me while he was putting his arm around his wife. I felt like a giant next to him. I didn't realize Stallone was *that* short.

ReplyDeleteI saw him at a Planet Hollywood event in the mid 90's I can't tell you how disappointed I was to see he is all of about 5'6 or 5'7 the most.
Even the lifts don't help.
I guess I don't get this blind in a way. I'm not an actor but it seems to me that if an actor is trying to get into character or stay in character between shots then it would be very distracting for crew members to greet him or interact him no matter how friendly or how well meant. it also seems like professionals on a film crew would understand this and accept it as part of the actor's method, and at least tolerate if not respect it. So why am I wrong here?

ReplyDeleteWoah! Granted, I was a good distance from the Garcia/Stallone embrace, I would have guessed Garcia was quite a bit taller. I'm not questioning you at all, I was up above them several rows, so perspective was skewed. Maybe he had lifts on, he seemed very tall compared to Sly!
As an actor (okay, not a famous one by any stretch) I would absolutely agree with the "don't look at, don't talk to" signs as a way for the actors to keep their space while working. However, if that were the case, it would seem that the signs (which ought to be unnecessary) would indicate as such. OR, that would be a clause in the crew/cast contract.

ReplyDeleteI was wearing two inch heals, so that made me 5'10". He was considerably shorter than me. Let's say 5'7" is the absolute limit. Top of his head was about at my nose...
