People Have Already Given Up On Oprah

Most of the time when a show is entering its final season or the last few episodes it gets a boost in the ratings, especially when announced in advance. The opposite appears to be true for Oprah. Since she announced she was quitting her show, people have started watching Judge Judy way more and watching Oprah way less.

Two weeks ago, for the first time in the 24 year run of her show, she got a 2.9 rating. She had never been below a 3.0 ever. From day one she was above that. No one is watching her. It is like people have said why bother since I will have to find something new to watch later anyway. Maybe she is leaving at the right time. I think Ellen is so much better than Oprah, but I will also admit they have two entirely different kinds of programs.

The other thing is that Oprah has launched lots of successful show hosts of her own and I bet if you combine all their ratings they would blow people away.

  1. I don't really care for Oprah but there is no denying that she is a very smart businesswoman. Will she really be "off" TV though considering she is launching her own network?

  2. she's had a good run...surely she knows when to fold 'em, and that time appears to be now.

  3. I gave up on Oprah in 1986.

  4. Oprah is a VERY smart business woman so she will be alright. It is no surprise that her show has dipped in the ratings, it has been on the air forever. Hell all the talk shows that came on when she first came out have been long gone (Geraldo, Sally Jesse, Donahue, etc.) It is definitely time to go away. She had a very good run.

  5. I have always disliked Oprah. Comes as no surprise to me.

  6. No love for Oprah for here.

  7. I've never cared to watch her show, but I've always had an immense respect for her - what she overcame, her work ethic, and what she's achieved.

  8. I lost all respect for Oprah when she brought James Frey back, with his editor, under false pretenses, then proceeded to berate him in front of millions, all because she was "humiliated" (her words). She should have dealt with him privately - that one act showed a real lack of class on her part, IMO.

Read a recent article that more or less implied that she has lost a large portion of her audience due in part to her new-agey beliefs and trying to foist them on everyone. The article also talked about problems she's having with Nate Berkus and the launch of his new show, because he's insisting on doing certain things his way, not hers.

  9. Isn't her show in repeats for the summer? That may explain the dip in ratings.

  10. Can't stand her. For a woman who preaches love and tolerance she is obviously more warm, caring and cordial to black guests, as opposed to white.. Thats not cool with me.

  11. I was a senior in college when her show first came on and we all stopped to watch before we went to dinner. She lost me after college and especially when she started that know your spirit crap and the endless roster of gurus.

I respect her as a business woman though and she has earned every penny.

  13. Not a big fan, but the thing that irks me most recently is her heartfelt call to ban cell-phone use while driving.

Yes, I agree with that 100% (and usually only turn my phone on for emergencies) however we all know her privileged ass is ensconced in the back of a limo as she travels hither and yonder, so that pesky little rule doesn't apply to her.

    Please (rich and entitled) bitch!

  14. I'm an Oprah watcher. The last little while has been reruns and most people wouldn't typically tune in to catch a rerun, particularly in the summer. No mystery, then.

    The end.

  15. Ugh, thank god. I can't stand that woman, her show or any of her spin offs.

  16. I'm sure the dip has to do with reruns in the summer.

That said, I am NO fan of Oprah and get so annoyed by her legions of devotees who do anything and everything she says. Plus, she always interrupts people during interviews. I don't knock her success, I've just never been a fan.

I'm all about Wendy Williams anyway, mmmmmkay.

  17. The tell-all book about her by Kitty Kelley may have contributed to the ratings drop, although, like posted, it is summer and reruns.

  18. don't like her at all. i think i watched for a couple of years when she was first on, she was a novelty. now i'm so sick of her and her disciples and holier than thou attitude...

i've been watching judge judy forever anyway! but i do miss montel. i loved it when he had sylvia browne on the show.

  20. I loved her show until I went to a taping. She was cold and distant toward the audience (black and white). Now all I see when watching her is a smart, conniving business woman.

It kind of pisses me off that people think she favors blacks over whites. If this woman favors blacks then I guess I must be white.

    Checks mirror.

Nope still black and so are millions of other African Americans who have not gotten their Oprah favoritism package.

Oh that's right Oprah is busy catering to her white celebrity friends like the Kennedy's who she calls her family, and Julia Roberts as well as the black celebrities, JHud, Jamie Foxx, Alica Keys. She also caters to AFRICAN GIRLS (gee she built THEM a school).

Me thinks the Mighty Opes favors anybody that can make her look good so don't get it twisted. When it comes to getting ahead the woman is color blind.

  21. I've never heard that accusation that she favors blacks.

It's definitely the re-runs that's caused the ratings drop. I've been trying to tune in but it's always a repeat.

I agree with the comments above though, too. I hated how she handled the million pieces author, very classless, imo. I also get ticked when I hear her hound people to sign her no text pledge. When she had her road trip with Gayle segments and they showed how she did not even know how to pump gas into the car I nearly threw up. I wish they had never shown how out of touch she truly is. No way is she driving so it's annoying to hear her lectures on how to drive even when I agree with what she saying. Although, she could be driving until the gas tank runs out and then just buys another car... ;)

  22. i have never understood - and will likely not understand - what is so interesting about what actors have to say. nor will i understand the allure of watching actors and show hosts exchange dumb little jokes and small talk.

i know oprah doesn't just interview actors, but i just had to write that anyway.

somehow just seeing pictures and reading stories of bad behavior in hollywood suffices well enough for me.

  23. oh yeah, and i think oprah is full of sheise. always have.

    **steps down from soapbox.

  24. Well, I lost a lot of respect for her after the James Fey incident, because she KNEW he lied. A lot of people had warned her producers about his book and she went with it anyway. She just did not want to look bad.
Also, she is COLD. The warm fuzzies only happen on camera. She has definitely let her cold nature show through recently.
I too hate the way she does interviews. She always interrupts and somehow makes it about HER. Geez, the guru brigade with that Tolle guy was bad too.
She should take her millions and just get fat in Santa Barbara.

  25. i haven't watched oprah in a few years now, mainly since ellen came on. nothing against oprah, i just prefer how lighthearted and genuinely fun ellen's show is to watch. great medicine when you're having a tough day.

if you've never seen dane cook's bit about oprah, google it, youtube it, whatever. it's hilarious how ridiculous and spot on he is! i'll see if i can find a link!
