The Two Most Popular Athletes In America Are An Accused Sexual Assaulter And A Habitual Cheater

Welcome to the world of American sports where the fans don't seem to care who they admire as long as the person is good at what they do. For the fourth year in a row, a Harris Interactive Poll (.pdf file) has Tiger Woods as the most popular athlete in America. This year though he did have to share the honor with Kobe Bryant.

Really? These are the two most popular? No one could think of anyone better or more deserving of adoration? Instead we picked someone who cheated on his wife with at least 20 women and probably more. Plus, it was way more than 20 times. But, because of that cheating Tiger did drop into the tie with the man who was accused of sexually assaulting a woman, did admit to cheating on his wife who has her own problems with domestic help and I am ashamed. The question was not who is the best athlete. The question was who is your favorite athlete. Maybe because it was a quick poll, people could not think of anyone else, but there has to be a better alternative.

  3. Could it be that their "favorite" athlete, also happened to be the best athletes in their fields.

I certainly wouldn't want to sleep with either of these guys, but they both have (or had in Tiger's case) great game. Respect that, not their off court drama.

Not sure why you'd be "ashamed" though. There are big villains in the world than pro athletes with too much time, money and groupies.

  6. The skeptic in me thinks that they are popular because they're living many guy's fantasy lives.

But it's also probably because those are the names you know. They're the tops in their fields, and the notoriety only adds to their fame.

  7. Most people could care less what an athlete does off the court as long as they are playing the game well and their team is winning. And both Tiger and Kobe are great athletes.
Kobe's sexual assault charges happened several years ago so I doubt people really factor that into their thinking when doing the poll. As for Tiger, he may be a dog and his game may be struggling now, but he is still a very popular athlete, and thats not going to change because he cheated on his wife.

  8. I would like to point out that Kobe wasn't just "accused" of sexual assault; he admitted it.

His press release that he gave after he reached a settlement with the victim admitted it. Granted, he didn't say "Yes, I raped her". He did, however, admit that she didn't feel she consented. Ummm, excuse me, it's up to her to decide whether or not to consent. If she doesn't feel she consented, she didn't. He said that he really believes that she feels she did not consent.

That's otherwise known as rape. God that makes me mad when people say he was innocent.

  10. What! No Ben Rapistberger? Shouldn't the quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers be at least number three?

  11. Are there any 'famous' atheletes who don't cheat or are there only ones who just haven't been caught yet?

  13. Well at least Michael Vick didn't make the list. I saw on Spike that he'll be featured in "Pros vs. Joes" very soon, after "enduring some incredible personal hardships". ...the fuck? HE had hardship?! Seems to me the only people that got hurt was those poor dogs - he got everything back.

Anyway, I vote Wayne Gretzky. Done.

  14. I'm not sure Kobe would still be married if he had a prenup. He's pretty much locked in.

For a Lakers fan, I can't fucking stand the guy.

  15. They asked who their favorite athlete was. I guess when responding they needed to look at the fine print of codicils that would eliminate 98% of humanity. They didn't ask who is your most moral athlete, or which athlete's wife is the biggest bitch.

  16. Derek Jeter FTW. No, I don't give a shit if he has the gift that keeps on giving. He's a great athlete and a nice guy and stays out of trouble.
