Four For Friday

#1 #2, #3, #4 - This is kind of Old Hollywood but some of the people are still alive so not a true Old Hollywood item. Anyway, this Academy Award winning (yeah I said it, no nominee/winner) actor who is still alive got one of his most famous roles in a very interesting way. The Academy Award winner/nominee director of the movie had a crush on this woman. Our actor discovered that the woman would take money for sex and paid for her for a year. The actor told the director he could get the woman interested but he wanted the role. He also wanted a role for one of his friends who is been a B+ movie actor and television actor forever. The director agreed and our actor made the introduction. The director had no idea the actor paid for her services. He used his entire paycheck from the movie to pay for her.

#1 - Academy Award winning actor
#2 - Director
#3 - B+ actor
#4 - The movie

  1. Now that's an awesome blind item!!

I gotta wrap my head around this one for a minute then make a guess at it.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Not Kirk Douglas. He hasn't won an Academy Award. Only nominated.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Shoot...Kirk Douglas never won the Oscar.

    ReplyDelete
  4. what about clint eastwood??

    ReplyDelete
  5. Robert deniro
    Martin Scorcese
    Joe Pesci
    Goodfellas

    ReplyDelete
  6. I like the Kirk Douglas guess since he was given an honorary oscar making him a winner.
    The director: Stanley Kubrick
    Best friend: Tony Curtis.
    Movie: Spartacus

    ReplyDelete
  7. Kirk Douglas received a Honorary Academy Award in 1996, therefore he has an academy award.

    ReplyDelete
  8. #1 Fredrich March
    #2 Stanley Kramer
    #3 Harry Morgan
    #4 Inherit the Wind

    ReplyDelete
  9. Oh, snap. I didn't see the honorary Oscar on IMDb. In that case, I'm liking MontanaMarriott's guess.

  11. Kubrick was nominated 5 times and won for 2001 Space Odyssey, so I am back on the Kirk Douglas express.

    ReplyDelete
  12. hmmm

    Gene Hackman
    Willian Friedkin
    Roy Scheider
    The french connection??

Problem to solve this blind is that the actor didnt necessarily win his Oscar with this movie...

    ReplyDelete
  13. and i dont like the Kirk Douglas guess because at the time he work with Kubrick, Kirk was a big name and Kubrick was t the beginning of his career. In fact, Kirk produced Spartacus, so i am not buying..

    ReplyDelete
  14. wow, juicy...i suck at these...but you guys are good! *loves*

    ReplyDelete
  15. You guys are doing an awesome job and I have nothing to contribute EXCEPT the B+ actor was a "movie actor and television actor forever". That leaves out, I think, Tony Curtis and Joe Pesci and Roy Schneider. The Harry Morgan guess works, of course.

    ReplyDelete
  16. So I guess the woman was just a random woman?

    Can't wait for all
your guys' guesses at this blind!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Spartacus was not the first time Kirk and Kubrick had worked together and SK had been making movies (not huge hits) for a while. Kirk was my first guess and MontanaM filled in the rest.

    ReplyDelete
  18. - I consider Tony Curtis Classic A List.

    - No idea who this is, just perennially bemused so many women "will take money" for sex.

I guess the actor told her to fake true interest and passion, and never to let slip it was just a job for her.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Srange. I was thinking Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate or Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Don't know why except the roles were such iconic characters and the actors were just young enough to need an incredible break like that.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Remember, either the friend or the director is dead.

We know the actor is alive and the blind states "some" are alive, implying more than one person.

I guess that could also include the woman.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Jack Nicholson was not at the start of his career for Cuckoo's Nest. Dustin Hoffman was, but he had no pull to get an actor hired as a costar in the Graduate, only his second film role and first staring role.
How anyone could believe that the little putz could talk his way into a role by paying a woman for sex for a year is a putz too. HELLO. And since Mike Nichols was at the beginning of his directing career and rumored to be gay, the woman would not have been of interest to him and he probably didn't have too much pull in getting Hoffman hired and who probably didn't make enough money for this purchase. To pout the kbosh on this whole guess, there were really no beefy male costar roles in that film for the B+ actor.
As to the Joe Pesci/Goodfellas guess, He is not known for TV.
    AT ALL.
MY THOUGHTS: I was thinking a pair of actors like Burt Reynolds in his prime when he was A-list and shtupping Sally Field, and Dom DeLuise. Rest his soul.
But Burt Reynolds never won an Oscar. And I am not suggesting that he pimped out Sally Field nor Loni Anderson. But that kind of A-list(at the time)actor for the time with a buddy relationship.
Also remember that some of the players have passed on to that giant casting cumulo nimphet in the sky to shtupp and shtupp until whenever.

    ReplyDelete
  22. ACTOR: MARLON BRANDO
    DIRECTOR: ELIA KAZAN
    BUDDY: KARL MALDEN
    FILM: ON THE WATERFRONT
And according to Shelley(also known as Shirley Schrift)Winters, Marlon was some shtupper. Of course, that is when he wasn't shtupping Wally Cox. But that is a whole other blind item.

    ReplyDelete
  23. #1-Burt Lancaster

    #2- Fred Zinnemann

    #3- Ernest Borgnine

    #4- FROM HERE TO ETERNITY

  25. Shite never mind Burt is dead!

    ReplyDelete
  26. ardleigh, but Ernest Borgnine is not. However, I like what you're pitching. But let's shake it up. How about Frank Sinatra (can't you just see him buying a hooker for a year?) for the pimping actor and Jack Warner for the TV actor. It's kinda iffy because TV was so new at this time. Same director and movie of course. (By the way Ernest Borgnine won Best Actor in 1955)

    ReplyDelete
  27. I like Aly's guess but how about Streetcar Named Desire for the movie (Brando, Kazan and Malden still for the other three) as it comes before On the Waterfront in their work together.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Reaching here:
    1. Robert Duvall
    2. Robert Altman

  29. ACTOR: BURT LANCASTER
    DIRECTOR: JOHN FRANKENHEIMER
    B+ FRIEND: TELLY SAVALAS
    FILM: BIRDMAN OF ALCATRAZ

  33. Having thought about this, how about:

    1. Mickey Rooney
    2. Norman Taurog
    3. Gene Reynolds
    4. Boys Town

    ReplyDelete
  34. Sorry. I read it wrong. Didn't realize BI stated the Academy Award-winning actor is still alive. Neither Brando nor Lancaster. Shucks.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Dave, that's a great guess! That sounds like something Mickey Rooney would do.

    ReplyDelete
  36. 1. jack nicholson
    2. milos forman
    3. danny devito
    4. cuckoo's nest
That is my guess and i am entitled to it.

    ReplyDelete
  37. So, #1 won an Oscar (for something and not necessarily Best Actor) and is still alive. His role for this movie was one of his most famous, but not necessarily his Oscar-winning role. And the best friend who was on TV, he could have been on TV AFTER this movie.

So the question is, what old Hollywood Oscar-winning actor has a best friend who started out (or ended up) on TV? I got nothin' except the first one. Maybe somebody else can fill in the blanks.

    Michael Douglas/Danny DeVito
    Ernest Borgnine/?
    Sidney Poitier/?
    Cliff Robertson/?
    Gene Hackman/?
    Jack Nicholson/?
    Richard Dreyfuss/?
    Jon Voight/?
    Dustin Hoffman/?
    Robert DeNiro/?
    Michael Caine/? (Best Supporting Actor)
    Sean Connery/? (ditto above)
    Tommy Lee Jones/?
    James Coburn/?

Anybody after that might not be considered Old Hollywood.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Do any of them have to be dead?

    Because if not:

#1-Jeff Bridges (although I hope he has more class)

#2- Peter Bogdanovich -who left his wife for Cybil Sheppard on this movie

#3- Randy Quaid (aka Cousin Eddie)

    #4- The Last Picture Show

    ReplyDelete
  39. Also, Mickey Rooney never won an Oscar, only nominated.

Jack Nicholson didn't have to push Danny DeVito, since Cuckoo's Nest was produced by Danny's old roommate and best friend, Michael Douglas. Just sayin'.

    This is a tricky one!

    ReplyDelete
  40. To put a permanent end to the Kirk Douglas guesses: Kubrick took over as a director for the movie months AFTER Curtis was cast. Douglas had hired Anthony Mann but they couldn't agree on anything after the first sequence was shot, so he had the idea of going back to Kubrick with whom he had a deal (three movies, beginning with Paths of Glory). Kubrick had just left another project (Brando's "One-Eyed Jacks") and was on set two days later. After that, Douglas and Kubrick fired the lead actress and hired Jean Simmons.

In addition to that, Curtis and Douglas had worked together before, in The Vikings.

The Mickey Rooney guess is a great one and Rooney has so much Hollywood experience that it looks like something he would attempt (and then speak about) to boost his career.

    ReplyDelete
  41. #1: Ernest Borgnine
#2: Delbert Mann (Academy Award winner)
#3: Joe Mantell (did a lot of TV and some interesting movie roles)
    #4: Marty

This is not the sexiest of guesses, but I think it adds up.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I thought of that Cindy-O, but in what galaxy does Joe Mantell rate as a B+ movie actor. Does one AA nomination make someone B+? Hello Sally Kirkland? If this is it, ENTY or whoever is ghostwriting these columns didn't write this one very well.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I completely forgot that Danny DeVito was in One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest. That episode of It's Always Sunny is so much funnier now!

    ReplyDelete
  44. How about Cliff Robertson, director Ted Nelson and Dick Van Patten? The film was "Charly."

    ReplyDelete
  45. Mickey Rooney won an honorary academy award "in recognition of his 50 years of versatility in a variety of memorable film performances."

    ReplyDelete
  46. Joe Mantell will always be B+ to me.
No, I had never heard of him, though his face is familiar; I guess I was thinking there was some leeway on the date of being B+, it being a "kind of Old Hollywood" blind.

    ReplyDelete
  47. When I think of "old Hollywood" and being part of that I think of pre-1960. The only three actors still alive that won the Oscar and had significant roles before 1960 are Sidney Poitier and Ernest Borgnine and Cliff Robertson. I think Cindy-O is on the right track but I would suggest the B+ actor is Jerry Paris. While Joe Mantell has had dozens of roles in movies and TV he really isn't recognizable. At least enough to say he was B+.

Jerry Paris was neighbor Jerry Helper to Dick Van Dyke on "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and was a respected TV director for many years. Dozens of credits for acting in movies and TV and dozens more for directing.

    My guess:
    1. Ernest Borgnine
    2. Delbert Mann
    3. Jerry Paris
    4. Marty

    ReplyDelete
  48. Maybe it isn't as old as we thing it is...

    1. Michael Douglas
    2. Robert Zemeckis
    3. Danny Devito
    4. Romancing the Stone

    ReplyDelete
  49. This comment has been removed by the author.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Dash, I like your thinking. And Jerry Paris is certainly more recognizable than Joe Mantell. But is he even B+ list, ever? That part plagues me...
I like Annie's guess--Cliff Robertson, Ralph Nelson, Dick van Patten, Charly. DVP is more B+ than those two.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Richard Dreyfuss
    Steven Spielberg
    Teri Garr
Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind

    ReplyDelete
  52. 1) Jack Palance
    2) Ralph Nelson
    3) Keenan Wynn
    4) Requiem for a Heavyweight

    ReplyDelete
  53. I couldn't help but think when I read it:

    1. Jack Nicholson
    2. Stanley Kubrick
    3. Scatman Crothers
    4. The Shining

The Shining is Jack's most famous role. Everyone quotes "Here's Johnny" because of him, which is hilarious considering where it comes from originally.

From IMDB Trivia: Scatman Crothers was a friend of Jack Nicholson's, and when he heard about the Halloran role, he asked Nicholson to talk to Kubrick about casting him.

    ReplyDelete
  54. ooh! I loves me some Scatman! Especially in The Shining.

That's a good guess. I immediately thought of Jack and Cuckoo's Nest tho. He was mind-blowing in that, and I can see him fighting for that role at that point in his career.. Wasn't James Coco in that? I was thinking him for the B+ guy.
    I guess I could JFGI

    ReplyDelete
  55. I am SUCH an idiot! I always think James Coco was in that movie...Anyway, lurkerxx, Scatman was also in Cuckoo's Nest w/ Jack. So you had the right friend, wrong movie.

    ReplyDelete
  56. This is a great blind. Thanks Enty!

I had to leave for work, and didn't have time try to figure this one out. I'm not sure if anyone got it right, but I want thank everyone for trying to solve this blind.

Enty and the people that post here make CDAN my favorite website!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Wow, good job everyone. I suck at these old blinds. Ah, to be perfectly honest, I suck at most of them! :P

    ReplyDelete
  58. Jerry Paris would be a B+ TV actor/ director, because of being on the Dick Van Dyke show and Happy Days, but never a B+ film actor.

As to the Ralph Nelson/Charly/Cliff Robertson guess, considered and thrown away. If this BI was written CORRECTLY, it says:
    Academy Award winner/nominee director
Ralph Nelson was nominated for an AA as producer of "Lilies of the Field" so the blind should have described him as Academy Award winner/nominee director/producer.
But what do I know, diddly about most of these, like all of us.
If it is Cliff Robertson, very ironic that besides the Oscar for Charly and marrying Miss MoneyBags, he "ratted" out David "Lender's" Begelman

    ReplyDelete
  59. How about?
    #1: Robert De Niro
    #2: Michael Cimino
    #3: John Cazale
    #4: The Deer Hunter

    ReplyDelete
  61. Cindy-O and dash, I thought Ernest Borgnine as well. One hell of a career. I don't think Jerry Paris quite fits the bill because even though he's gangbusters in tv, he has a spotty movie career. I like lurkerxx's guess of The Shining. That one makes a lot of sense.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I'm liking the Jack Nicholson guess, but I'm more inclined to think the movie is Cuckoo's Nest, with Scatman Crothers--or possibly Christopher Lloyd--as the friend. But, again, the B+ thing is throwing me.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I like Marks guess (Dreyfus/Spielberg/Garr/CE3K) but Dreyfus worked with Spielberg the year before on Jaws so I doubt he would have to pull a stunt like that to get a part in a Speilberg movie.

Truth be told, this blind isn't all that shocking. People have done worse morally questionable things to get a part in a movie than pay some girl to sleep with the director. And an actor talking a director into casting one of his buddies? Happens all the time!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Pacino

  66. Hi All,

I had also thought of Jack Nicholson, but a different movie - Chinatown.

    A+ - Nicholson (3 Oscars)
    Polanski (1 Oscar)
Burt Young (from Rocky and lots of tv)

I was also wondering if Faye Dunaway was the woman. She was definately a similar type of beuty (icey blonde) to Polanski's wife, Sharon Tate, who had died several years later. Polanski had left America after her death and was hesitant to return but Nicholson helped get him back to do the picture. Oscars all round.

Polanski and Dunaway had a famously tempestuous relationship (though no common knowledge evidence of an affair). She refuses to talk about him, he says they got along well before and after filming.

I didn't want to say anything earlier b/c I was mulling it over, but I have been spured on by all the Nicholson guesses. The only problem with this blind is that everyone is alive, why I was hesitant to go forward and therein lies the rub.

Perhaps, there is another B+ actor from the film that someone else can mention.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I also wanted to say that I think that Little Miss Smoke and Mirrors' Pacino/Coppola/Godfather guess run a close second.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Anonymous3:37 PM

    Paul Newman
    Robert Wagner
I've heard rumors about these two.
And the movie could be either Harper or Winning.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Aly, the "Academy Award winner/nominee director" means two people, the Academy Award winner and the nominee director. The Ralph Nelson guess is a good one since he was only a nominee.

Delbert Mann was a winner, so it's not Delbert Mann and Ernest Borgnine.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Stacia,
I guess I need to go back to elementary school for more classes in reading comprehension. So does this mean the actor won his AA for this movie? If so, then this must be Cliff Robertson, Ralph Nelson, Dick Van Patten(solid B+) and Charly.

    ReplyDelete
  71. No matter who these people are, the actor made a shrewd career investment using Hollywood currency. Actor, friend, director, woman of interest--everybody's happy!

    ReplyDelete
  72. This is good timing as I'm currently 2/3's through a biography on Jack...

His close friends: Bruce Dern, Harry Dean Stanton, Warren Beatty...

    I wanted to go with:

Chinatown, Jack, Roman Polanski...but I cant figure out the friend angle.

    So my guess is

    Movie: King of Marvin Gardens:

Director Bob Rafelson - 2 time nominee

    Actor Jack Nicholson

Friend (tv and film actor forever_ Bruce Dern

    ReplyDelete
  73. Jack had just done in the previous couple of years, Easy Rider(huge hit) with Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda, Five Easy Pieces(huge hit) for Rafelson and Carnal Knowledge(huge hit)for Mike Nichols. Do you think that he really had to bribe Bob Rafelson to get the lead role in this very small film. And I am old enough to say that I actually saw this film in a movie theater. Not on tape/dvd. But anything is possible in H-Weird.

  76. Paying a woman for sex for a year is something Jack would do, and procuring her for a director in order to get a role? I wouldn't put that past him either. Since one of the comments above ruled out DeVito as he was Michael Douglas' close friend, I'm going with another actor who's been around forever (and already guessed above, too), Christopher Lloyd.

    1. Jack
    2. Milos Forman
    3. Lloyd
    4. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

    ReplyDelete
  77. Since this is partly Old Hollywood I looked at all survivng actor winners from in the 50s to 80s. Where they won multiple awards I simply show the first decade they won rather than repeat a name.

    1950s - Ernest Borgnine

1960s - Maximilian Schnell, George Chakiris, Sidney Portier, George Kennedy, Cliff Robertson

1970s - Gene Hackman, Joel Grey, Robert DeNiro, Jack Nicholson, Richard, Dreyfuss, Jon Voight, Christopher Walken, Dustin Hoffman

1980s - Timothy Hutton, Ben Kingsley, Louis Gossett Jr., Robert Duvall, F Murray Abraham, William Hurt, Michael Caine, Michael Douglas, Sean Connery, Kevin Kline, Danial Day-Lewis, Denzel Washington.

Please note that I have excluded Honorary Oscars inasmuch as the blind says "winner" not awarded an Academy Award.

  79. Oh, wildcat, I like that guess.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Dude, the problem with it being Christopher Lloyd, which I realized after I suggested him, is that he is alive, as are Nicholson and Forman, and someone is dead. If it is Cuckoo's Nest, I think it's Scatman Crothers (who has been dead for sometime and might have qualified as B+ back in his heyday). But I'm in no way convinced that this is it because as Aly says, Nicholson was really established by this time so why would he have to bribe anyone. However, I would imagine Nicholson knew he could give a towering performance as McMurphy, and according to imdb, the role was offered to James Caan, Gene Hackman, and Marlon Brando (and Forman apparently wanted Burt Reynolds) so …maybe.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Cindy-O

    D'oh! Good catch

    ReplyDelete
  82. Tony Curtis never won an Oscar. Sorry wildcatward and sunnyside.
And the rights to Cuckoo's Nest were owned by Kirk Douglas who could never get the financing to portray McMurphy himself, so he handed them off to son Michael. I think when considering the caliber of film Milos Forman has directed and his type of career, that a sex with "dreamgirl" wouldn't sway his casting decisions. Now in another world, if the blind item stated that it was the producer, and not the director of this picture, who was swayed by the great (humma-de-humma-de) then Michael Douglas as the solution would be a lay-down, as it might be termed.
Other thing to consider, the blind states that the lead actor gave ALL of his salary on the flick to the woman, how much could that have been? By this time he was a big star. This is after The Last Detail and Chinatown, two films for which he received nominations as best actor in a film. So I would think he'd be receiving a decent salary for the role. On the other hand, Cliff Robertson had a smaller career and he was married to Dina Merrill, so he certainly didn't need the money for starring in Charly.

  83. Ok try this again: a couple comments:
if this did not say Director;Michael Douglas was the Producer of 'Cukoo' and this would explain why he gave Nicholson that role, because it has been said his father Kirk was always upset he was not given the award-winning role..

Another Oscar winning actor I could see doing this would be Nicholas Cage though not sure who the others would be..his career started in the early 80's
