#1 #2, #3, #4 - This is kind of Old Hollywood but some of the people are still alive so not a true Old Hollywood item. Anyway, this Academy Award winning (yeah I said it, no nominee/winner) actor who is still alive got one of his most famous roles in a very interesting way. The Academy Award winner/nominee director of the movie had a crush on this woman. Our actor discovered that the woman would take money for sex and paid for her for a year. The actor told the director he could get the woman interested but he wanted the role. He also wanted a role for one of his friends who is been a B+ movie actor and television actor forever. The director agreed and our actor made the introduction. The director had no idea the actor paid for her services. He used his entire paycheck from the movie to pay for her.

Spartacus was not the first time Kirk and Kubrick had worked together and SK had been making movies (not huge hits) for a while. Kirk was my first guess and MontanaM filled in the rest.

Srange. I was thinking Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate or Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Don't know why except the roles were such iconic characters and the actors were just young enough to need an incredible break like that.

Jack Nicholson was not at the start of his career for Cuckoo's Nest. Dustin Hoffman was, but he had no pull to get an actor hired as a costar in the Graduate, only his second film role and first staring role.
ReplyDeleteHow anyone could believe that the little putz could talk his way into a role by paying a woman for sex for a year is a putz too. HELLO. And since Mike Nichols was at the beginning of his directing career and rumored to be gay, the woman would not have been of interest to him and he probably didn't have too much pull in getting Hoffman hired and who probably didn't make enough money for this purchase. To pout the kbosh on this whole guess, there were really no beefy male costar roles in that film for the B+ actor.
As to the Joe Pesci/Goodfellas guess, He is not known for TV.
AT ALL.
MY THOUGHTS: I was thinking a pair of actors like Burt Reynolds in his prime when he was A-list and shtupping Sally Field, and Dom DeLuise. Rest his soul.
But Burt Reynolds never won an Oscar. And I am not suggesting that he pimped out Sally Field nor Loni Anderson. But that kind of A-list(at the time)actor for the time with a buddy relationship.
Also remember that some of the players have passed on to that giant casting cumulo nimphet in the sky to shtupp and shtupp until whenever.

That is my guess and i am entitled to it.
So, #1 won an Oscar (for something and not necessarily Best Actor) and is still alive. His role for this movie was one of his most famous, but not necessarily his Oscar-winning role. And the best friend who was on TV, he could have been on TV AFTER this movie.

This is a tricky one!
To put a permanent end to the Kirk Douglas guesses: Kubrick took over as a director for the movie months AFTER Curtis was cast. Douglas had hired Anthony Mann but they couldn't agree on anything after the first sequence was shot, so he had the idea of going back to Kubrick with whom he had a deal (three movies, beginning with Paths of Glory). Kubrick had just left another project (Brando's "One-Eyed Jacks") and was on set two days later. After that, Douglas and Kubrick fired the lead actress and hired Jean Simmons.

The Mickey Rooney guess is a great one and Rooney has so much Hollywood experience that it looks like something he would attempt (and then speak about) to boost his career.

ReplyDeleteNo, I had never heard of him, though his face is familiar; I guess I was thinking there was some leeway on the date of being B+, it being a "kind of Old Hollywood" blind.
When I think of "old Hollywood" and being part of that I think of pre-1960. The only three actors still alive that won the Oscar and had significant roles before 1960 are Sidney Poitier and Ernest Borgnine and Cliff Robertson. I think Cindy-O is on the right track but I would suggest the B+ actor is Jerry Paris. While Joe Mantell has had dozens of roles in movies and TV he really isn't recognizable. At least enough to say he was B+.

The Shining is Jack's most famous role. Everyone quotes "Here's Johnny" because of him, which is hilarious considering where it comes from originally.
From IMDB Trivia: Scatman Crothers was a friend of Jack Nicholson's, and when he heard about the Halloran role, he asked Nicholson to talk to Kubrick about casting him.

Burt Young (from Rocky and lots of tv)
I was also wondering if Faye Dunaway was the woman. She was definately a similar type of beuty (icey blonde) to Polanski's wife, Sharon Tate, who had died several years later. Polanski had left America after her death and was hesitant to return but Nicholson helped get him back to do the picture. Oscars all round.
Polanski and Dunaway had a famously tempestuous relationship (though no common knowledge evidence of an affair). She refuses to talk about him, he says they got along well before and after filming.
I didn't want to say anything earlier b/c I was mulling it over, but I have been spured on by all the Nicholson guesses. The only problem with this blind is that everyone is alive, why I was hesitant to go forward and therein lies the rub.
Perhaps, there is another B+ actor from the film that someone else can mention.
I also wanted to say that I think that Little Miss Smoke and Mirrors' Pacino/Coppola/Godfather guess run a close second.

Paying a woman for sex for a year is something Jack would do, and procuring her for a director in order to get a role? I wouldn't put that past him either. Since one of the comments above ruled out DeVito as he was Michael Douglas' close friend, I'm going with another actor who's been around forever (and already guessed above, too), Christopher Lloyd.

ReplyDeleteDude, the problem with it being Christopher Lloyd, which I realized after I suggested him, is that he is alive, as are Nicholson and Forman, and someone is dead. If it is Cuckoo's Nest, I think it's Scatman Crothers (who has been dead for sometime and might have qualified as B+ back in his heyday). But I'm in no way convinced that this is it because as Aly says, Nicholson was really established by this time so why would he have to bribe anyone. However, I would imagine Nicholson knew he could give a towering performance as McMurphy, and according to imdb, the role was offered to James Caan, Gene Hackman, and Marlon Brando (and Forman apparently wanted Burt Reynolds) so …maybe.

ReplyDeleteAnd the rights to Cuckoo's Nest were owned by Kirk Douglas who could never get the financing to portray McMurphy himself, so he handed them off to son Michael. I think when considering the caliber of film Milos Forman has directed and his type of career, that a sex with "dreamgirl" wouldn't sway his casting decisions. Now in another world, if the blind item stated that it was the producer, and not the director of this picture, who was swayed by the great (humma-de-humma-de) then Michael Douglas as the solution would be a lay-down, as it might be termed.
Other thing to consider, the blind states that the lead actor gave ALL of his salary on the flick to the woman, how much could that have been? By this time he was a big star.This is after The Last Detail and Chinatown, two films for which he received nominations as best actor in a film. So I would think he'd be receiving a decent salary for the role. On the other hand, Cliff Robertson had a smaller career and he was married to Dina Merrill, so he certainly didn't need the money for starring in Charly.
