Winona Ryder Hates Mel Gibson - Happy To Tell You Why
Winona Ryder is in the new issue of GQ. Nothing terribly thrilling about that, but she did get really candid in her interview, specifically when she started talking about Mel Gibson. It all happened about 15 years ago when the pair were at a party and Mel, dead drunk, came up to Winona and had a few words.
"I was with my friend, who's gay. Mel made a really horrible gay joke. And somehow it came up that I was Jewish. He said something about 'oven dodgers,' but I didn't get it. I'd never heard that before. It was just this weird, weird moment. I was like, 'He's anti-Semitic and he's homophobic.' No one believed me!"
We all believe you now. Does Mel Gibson not have a self censor button? What kind of a-hole is a person who comes up to people and says these things like this?
"Oven dodger" is the worst thing I have ever heard. Does he have no tact? Horrible!
ReplyDeletemel gibson is filled to the brim with hate----of anyone who isn't just like him. he's a BIGOT.
ReplyDeletei don't know how he continues to get work but i stopped watching anything he's in a long time ago.
As a Jew, I find the saying so awful that I had to grunt/sigh/chuckle.
ReplyDeleteOy vay.
Maybe Ms. Horowitz can place the whole shoplifting blame on Mr. Gibson's hating shoulders?
"Oven Dodger"
ReplyDeleteI just can't....
OMG.
Mel is Catholic right? They should excommunicate him for that. Decency demands it.
ReplyDeleteWow! And I believe her about no one believing her at the time. I think old Mel has always been evil but managed to keep it from the general public. It's a shame because I used to enjoy his movies and he was once gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteHow does someone with all his advantages in life speak like that? How can others allow it? He needs to go sit in the corner, for a long long time.
ReplyDeleteI'm Jewish also, and "oven dodger" is a new one for me...The man is hateful he may have had a filter at one time but now it just flows from his venomous mouth...
ReplyDeleteWinona is no sweet thing either. One year, she went to a charity event and when she was escorted to her assigned sea, she noticed that there were no famous people at her table and asked to be moved immediately.
ReplyDeleteMy friend was at that table and of course recongnized her and knew that Winona was a HUGE fan of her son's music (the late Jeff Buckley), so when she introduced herself, Winona felt like an ass! Haha!!
Serves her right.
Oh Mel. What an embarassment to white people and Catholics all around.
ReplyDeleteHe is just so obnoxious.
ReplyDeleteMissjenny619 - So, just because she acted entitled, that justifies Mel's antisemitic slurs? That's not fair in my book. Mel Gibson is an ass and she didn't deserve to be treated like that. No one does.
ReplyDeleteMissjennyy - I love me some Jeff Buckley.
ReplyDeleteI agree that Winona kind of sucks in her own right, although she was genius in Heathers.
I guess I believe her incident with Mel Gibson. Ever since her shoplifting affairs came to light, I think of Winona as a crazy lady.
If anyone else was telling this story, I would believe it. Winona? I don't believe anything that comes out of her mouth. And I spent the 80s/90s trying to imitate her as much as possible.
ReplyDeleteNot surprising but what a hateful prick.
ReplyDeleteSo let me get this straight-he will call Jewish people "oven dodgers" but at the same time deny the Holocaust ever happened (or at least support his denier father)?! Those Jewish people you hate so much couldn't dodge ovens that didn't exist according to the deniers you identify with Mel. Get your beliefs straight hater.
Hatred and ignorance are dangerous alone and more so together.
Fuck you Mel.
Karmnen - I am definitely not saying she deserved to be called that, nobody does!! I'm just saying she's no sweetheart herself. I love a lot of her movies <3 I just hate when celebrities act uppity like that. I guess it was an excuse to tell that story about her.
ReplyDeleteOk, english is not my native language so after I googled "Oven Dodgers" I couldn't believe it!! so offensive and hurtful. This just shows that if you're a Megastar you can get away with everything, even those horrible comments.
ReplyDeleteI spent the scariest cab ride of my life recently, when an Iranian cabbie who picked me up at the airport started randomly spouting hatred about Jews and (without knowing anything abut me, or if I was Jewish), lectured me on how the Holocaust was fictional. I mean this guy got into detail with his 'evidence' .... the energy in that taxi was creepy as f*ck! I wasn't sure if I was going to end up in a dumpster somewhere. Wacky!
ReplyDelete@blondgossip - thank you! You beat me to it. So did jews "dodge an oven" or was the holocaust a lie?? Get your fucking story straight.
ReplyDelete@looserdude - ah but see, Mel has his own private little offshoot of the Catholic church - I'm sure there's no conflict between his church and the beliefs he made up.
OT- that picture of her is great.
ReplyDeleteI do not doubt he would say it, but at the same time....she does lack a certain amount of credibility.
MissJenny - Ah I reread it and I got confused because you put "Serves her right" the paragraph after her being snooty, so it made it seem like she deserved any bad thing in general. Sorry, I have a splitting headache and I think the worst of people right now.
ReplyDeleteKarmen-
ReplyDeleteOMG, I soooooo did not mean it like that! Yikes! I can see what you meant now, sooo sorry! I was referring to my story when I said that, not the Mel thing. Geesh.
I've been up since 2:30am for an early morning airport drop-off. My bad. I need to proof-read everything today.
speechless on this one.....
ReplyDeleteMissjenny...I can't let the Jeff Buckley comment pass by...if you are friends with his mother, could you please pass on to her my condolences on the loss of her incredibly talented son? Please let her know there are people who will never, ever forget him. You can't know how much that would mean to me.
ReplyDeleteWhat a gift that man had.
That term turns my stomach. I just watched the History Channel's "the Third Reich" last night. War is disgusting, and I can't even imagine what any of the people who lived through it went through. He is vile.
ReplyDeleteI also, had never heard the term "oven dodgers." How revolting. This man has never had a filter of any kind.
ReplyDeleteWhat really ticks me off is that his publicist, Alan Nierob, I believe is Jewish. If he is, how can he even begin to justify representing someone as vile as Mel. I realize a job is a job, but at some point, your self-respect has to kick in.
As far as Winona goes, it seems kind of sad that because of her run-in with the law, people are hesitant to put credence in what she's saying. I believe her. What does she have to gain, really, by going public with this 15 years after the fact?
mel makes me cry. i'm struggling to keep from stooping down to his level b/c you can't counter hate w/ hate. but boy it's hard.
ReplyDeleteNever found Mel Gibson hot. Never. It was Antonio back then. Of course I did find Val Kilmer, another asshole, hot in his younger days, so I've no room to talk. But he isn't a total, irredeemable piece of shit like Gibson is.
ReplyDeleteWinona was so beautiful and talented. What happened to her? That being said, I believe her. The guy has a way with homophobic, racist and sexist slang. I don't find it hard to believe that the man who spouted "Sugar Tits" would also spout, "Oven Dodgers". How anyone could make a joke like that is beyond my comprehension. Fuck him.
I believe her, but I think she is happy to have a story to get her in the limelight a little bit.
ReplyDeletePoor Winona. Mel can be a dick from hell and still get roles, but everyone runs from Noni because she knicked some makeup once or something. I love how she's aged. She's always been a beauty but she is a really lovely woman now. I love this portrait.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, the table thing, maybe she just wasn't comfortable sitting with people she didn't know in any context. She may not have been acting entitled, just wanted to be around people she knew she had something in common with or had met before. Nothing wrong with that. I don't like forced small talk with strangers, either.
Oven dodger??? Holy hell. I have never heard such an awful term before.
ReplyDeleteWhat a horrible hate filled man he is.
That is a GREAT picture of Winona.
Why is this man still getting work?
ReplyDeleteHe's in a film next year called The Beaver and another one called How I Spent My summer Vacation.
Perhaps people should start going in IMBd and start leaving messages for the casting directors of these films. They have a page on IMDb. Nothing nasty - we are better than that - just polite reminders of the sort of man Mel Gibson is - as we see here with the 'oven dodgers' comment.
