Britney Spears Sets iTunes Record For Song She Ripped Off

The Bellamy Brothers may want to reconsider the whole not suing Britney Spears thing. The country duo, who recorded the song, If I Said You Had A Beautiful Body, Would You Hold It Against Me, released a statement today saying that despite, the blatant ripoff of their song by Britney, they would not be pursuing legal action.

Pretty nice of them considering that Britney's song Hold It Against Me was #1 on iTunes faster than anyone in history. The duo said they think that Britney is talented but they really feel ripped off and hurt that she would just not even try and make it sound different.

  1. I wonder if they aren't suing her because no one wants to admit they wrote a song with that cheese title.

    Heh.

  2. All this time I thought that was a lame pick-up line used by losers in bars.

  3. ten bucks she had no clue. seriously. now her writers and producers? of course. classy move by the BBs, prob due to how lengthy a a proce$$ it would be.

and boo on the 90s electronica/ibiza sound. evolve already. side-eye to t-pain and autotune influence.

  4. you know, I grew up being tortured by the Bellamy Brothers song so I know it pretty well, I've also heard Brits song. Other than the premise of saying something about another persons body and the title line following it, that is the only resemblance I have heard. The songs sound nothing alike in tune and frankly it's a stupid pick-up line used long before the Bellamy brothers used it in a song. Did I think of thier song when I heard it? Yep. Probably the first time I thought of them in 15 years or more. Either way, both songs are silly. Oh and I don't think it sounds like her singing at all. Whoever is doing it can actually belt out a few strong notes.

  5. I detest Britney Spears. I'm not buying her ah-shucks stupidity. I'm convinced she's the answer to the Fake Singer BI.

The songwriters are stupid to not reap royalties on this shitty song that will get major airplay.

  6. It's a cheesy pick up line used and abused for years. Have you heard the two songs - they are light years apart! LOL, a lawsuit would be laughed out of court. There is absolutely no similarity and how can you claim that pick up line as "original" to the Bellamy Brothers?

  7. Dr. Luke produced this song and if anything, he just ripped off himself and all the stuff he has produced for Ke$ha. The beat to Brit's song absolutely sounds like something Ke$ha would have used. I haven't heard the BB song, but if above comments are true that the songs sound nothing alike then they should sit down. A song title alone does not a lawsuit make; many songs have similar or even identical titles but no one is suing the other over it.

And why feel hurt that Britney wouldn't "try"? It's Britney. I love her actually, but the last thing I would expect from her is effort. Personally I think she's broken and has no interest in performing anymore, but is being forced into it by everyone else who needs the money train to keep chugging along. It's sad, really. Let the poor girl retire.

  8. that line came straight from Groucho Marx, so the Bellamy Brothers stole it from Groucho.

So if anybody sues BritBrit, it should be Groucho's estate. But can you really be sued for using a lame throwaway joke as a line in a song?

  9. and p.s. they compared the two songs on Howard Stern this morning, and they sound absolutely nothing alike.
They share only part of the Groucho line.....
"If I said you had a beautiful body, would you hold it against me?"

  10. I'm a huge Britney fan, unsurprisingly. Once in the late 90s, I was going through a difficult breakup, and a beautiful Cuban asked me out, but I said no not until I had moved, yadda yadda. Months later, we finally went out, and at dinner he said he didn't like Britney Spears. I paid for my meal and never talked to him again. I can understand that people hate Britney, but not in my personal space.

  11. Every time she releases her chipmunk songs, I wonder if she's MV as well. She could sing when she was a kid. If she could sing properly (i.e. without autotune) this wouldn't be a half-bad song.

I had heard she had help on this with Pauly D? Is it this song, or is there another one?

  12. OK, with the sheer amount of money this moron makes "singing," odds are that several of those reading here are fans. Please explain to me what the appeal is, because I honestly don't understand it. I'm not hating on her, I'm just saying that I don't find her that compelling as a performer, and I don't think her music is anything special, either.

  13. They've probably already been paid off.

  14. Sue Ellen-LOL!

    I will say it again...
Met Britney & she is a Bitch!

  15. I don't hate Britney but I don't like her music and even if I did I'm sure she sings any song her handlers buy for her as most performers do, so I think she didn't know this was someone else's song. But from another thread I read people think this wasn't rip off.

I agree with Little Miss Smoke...they probably got paid already.

  17. Like my husband says, if the Bellamy Brothers claim had any merit, then The Beach Boys might as well sue Katy Perry for "California Girls"/"California Gurls".

  18. The Bellamy Brothers could only sue if they wrote the lyric and/or music. It doesn't sound like they have much a case. I like two Britney songs "Toxic" and "Lucky" more because of the story they tell than because of how they sound.

I don't get this woman's immense fame and wealth either. And for the life of me, I can't figure out if she's a hellcat bitch who's a master manipulator of her public image or a mentally ill half-wit who is used by all those around her.

  19. Some mixmaster (I think it was Timbaland) explained that certain voices are reedy and nasal enough that a good producer can do wonders with electronic percussion, sawtooth waves (look it up) and extremely compressed sped-up vocals to make the best electronica. Britney's voice is beyond overproduced -- it's compressed, echoed, sped up, doubled, sometimes with five or six electronic harmonic layers added. No, it's not singing, and it wasn't meant to be. She isn't Helen Reddy. But for what producers want to do with vocal tracks in dance music, some people have the right voice. Rihanna in "Only Girl," for instance, has that robotic inhuman android cyborg tone of voice that works in electronic dance/pop.

My favorite Britney joke: When she was releasing her second cd, a Rolling Stone critic pointed out that she talked a lot in her songs, kind of like rap, kind of like pop. "Maybe we should call it pap," he added.

  20. @Barton Fink - ha! That cracks me up! What if they were the love of your life? :)

Not that I'm defending Britney or would be surprised at the accusation, but I read in another article that the Bellamy Brothers took their song line from "You Bet Your Life".

I'd never heard of the Bellamy Brothers before this, so congrats to them for getting their name out there again. I really don't see why they aren't sueing if this is a legit claim...??

  21. How can they say they are the same? The loop, the baseline, nothing is the same.
Is there an oldies tour trying to happen?

  22. Followup to the Cuban Britney-hater story: A year later, one of my friends told me that he had gone on a blind date with the same beautiful washboard-ab Cuban. My friend worked at Motorola, however, and the Cuban guy didn't like Motorola, so they ended their date early too. Somewhere, there's a tall, handsome, beautiful, muscular Cuban guy with a 29 inch waist, pissing people off left and right. I'll introduce you if you want.

  23. Ugh. Zzzz.

I love this country but one thing I will never understand is our most successful pop music. I have never understood the Britney thing and reckon at this point I never will. I see there's some there there possibly, but she just doesn't impress me.

My musical soul belongs in Europe. Why can't we worship Robbie Williams here?! Or have the new Take That album (shockingly phenomenal) ruling the charts like over there?

Sigh, dammit. Enty as a consolation, post some pics of Take That or at least Robbie? Please? xoxo

  24. I agree they were probably paid off, and it would not surprise me if she is MV. There is a picture floating around wit her hair up and showing the sew in extension, and I think "why" on earth would she put her hair up on purpose to show them? I don't get it.

  25. @Barton that is a hilarious story.
