Esperanza Spalding Beats The Biebs

Apparently Justin Bieber fans have not heard of the curse that follows Grammy Best New Artist winners. I myself was rooting for The Biebs to win just so maybe he would fade away. Instead, Esperanza Spalding won the award and found out in a matter of minutes just how vindictive Biebs fans can be when their bob haired teen does not win.

Spalding's Wikipedia page was changed and Biebs Twitter followers threatened not only Spalding's life but all the lives of Grammy judges. Yes, no one had really heard of Spalding but her music is good and Biebs fans just need to get over it.

  2. I find it odd that the Beebs didn't win anything. And who is this girl exactly? Never heard of her.

I'm sure the Beebs will clean up at the Teen Choice Awards.

  4. She is actually a very good musician which leads me to believe that sometimes, just sometimes, quality wins over popularity with the judges or whatever group decides these things..Good for her and boo on Biebs fans. Not cool.

  5. Thought the most Ludicrous Award should go to Lady Gag Gag. I think she jumped the shark last night.

  6. I'm usually in the "Who in the Hell is that" boat with everyone else, but I actually know Esperanza Spaulding's work and I am shocked that the academy made the right choice (instead of the pop culture choice). She plays an upright bass like nobody's business! Yay Grammy people!

  7. Arcade Fire was the worst winner, I think. Simply because it legitimizes that hipster crap (though, does it mean that they are now too mainstream and will be abandoned by their fans?)

  8. Sorry Red, when I heard about Arcade Fire winning, I thought to myself, "wow, the Grammys finally got one right for a change!"

The Grammys aren't supposed to be a popularity contest (even though they certainly have been in the past).

  9. Didn't have to be a popularity contest. That album was definitely not better than Eminem's...and I think the sole reason why it beat out Lady A's is that it won all those others.

Hipsterism needs to be stopped before it destroys our social fabric.

  10. I am not going to lie, I was very suprised by Arcade Fire's win. But, I am not as familiar with them as with the other artists. I had hoped Mumford and Sons would win in thier catagory but.....

OT- slightly.....CeeLo and Gwyneth were hilarious! I don't even like her but I loved thier performance. He is a total nut!

  11. I was left scratching my head at a few of the winners (why was there so much COUNTRY? They have their own awards show!), but I thought the performances last night were awesome. Enjoyed almost every one.
Also, Marc Anthony was high as a fucking kite.

  12. I hadn't heard of arcade fire before and the first song made me realize I'm effing old. It hurt my ears. The lights were killing my eyes (and this was on TV, not live - even if it was HD :-)). The second song was better for me but I literally left the room on the first song.

  13. I love when the tweens don't get their way. They are so used to being handed everything by their parents. Their collective minds blow up when something doesn't go as expected.

That generation will be in for a real thrill when they get rejected for their first love or lose out on a job. They really won't be able to handle any sort of rejection or failure at all. Scary times.

  14. What the hell? it's an award and let's face it he's a performer not a great singer.

  15. Personally, I liked the opening number even tho Christina overvocalized just a tad.

I gotta confess, I saw "Never Say Never" this past weekend and liked it.

While I do love her, Barbra Streisand should have stayed home. I love Kris too, but dang, poor guy could hardly talk. He was either drunk, high, or his new teeth didn't fit.

I heard Marc Anthony sing a few bars of "Moon River", but I didn't see or hear what J.Lo said to shut him down.

John Mayer looked like hell, but I liked "Jolene" with Nora Jones and Keith Urban.

  16. Diddly Piddly was on SOMETHING when he introduced Rihanna + Drake

  17. Spaulding's talent aside, it makes me wonder if it was an award for her, or against the Beebs. I'm sure it must bug a lot of people that the little twank generated $100+ mil last year.

  18. Wow, the Grammy's definitely win this year's award for "Award Show With the Most Integrity."

  19. @red: if you think hipsters are ruining the moral fabric of america, clearly you have never watched, or more importantly, experienced the types of people showcased on 'toddlers and tiaras,' 'say yes to the dress,' 'jersey shore, any of 'the hills' bs, 'my sweet 16,' etc.

  20. @RocketQueen

I saw Mark Anthony was DEFINITELY on something. He looked HIGH as Hell. J-lo was giving him all kinds of looks while they were talking because he kept messing up.

  21. FTA:
I don't get all the country wins, either.

"Need you now" is certainly not the worst song I've ever heard, but "Lady Antebellum" is probably one of the stupider band names ever.

  22. @Lady J - dude couldn't even string a sentence together on the red carpet before the show! I've been around coke once or twice in my life and I swear, he was cracked the HELL out. Apparently JLo interrupted him at one point during the awards and he looked like he might kill her. That man is just not right.

  24. @red - My husband and I too thought Pdiddy was effed up. Maybe he partook in some "Jeffrey"? LOL.
(reference from Get him to the Greek - coincidentally we watched it on Sat night)

@BigMomma - I too love Mumford & Sons and wished they had won as well. Never heard of Arcarde Fire, but I liked their last performance - the one WIHTOUT all the seizure inducing lights.

  25. Gotta admire Cee Lo for fitting a tribute to the Muppets, Elton John, and the San Diego Chicken into one performance.

I missed JLo and Mark Anthony somehow and I watched that show twice.

I love that the academy changed the definition of 'new' artist so that someone with 3 albums, a performance at the WH for Obama, and tons of industry cred can win the award. This category had another surprise winner a few years back who mentioned in her speech that she had been around 10 years.

Album of the year has had a few surprise winners in the past, I had a feeling that category was wide open again this year.

  26. @evergrey - LOVED Get him to the Greek! Pdiddly was hilarious in that and now that you mention it, Russell Brand was back stage with Katy so maybe they did fire one up

@FS - the San Diego chicken comment killed me! LOL thanks!

  27. I too thought it was great that Esperanza Spalding won.
What I learned last night was 2 things:
    1) Despite my initial surprise that the Beibs CAN sing(had never heard a song by him before) His lyrics/performance style made me cringe and remember the days in the 90's when that style of pop shit was cool. It's like he was 5 boy band menmbers in one pint size well coiffed person. ugh
    2) Mick Jagger (having never seen him perform live) rocked my socks off! The way he chased that guitarist around and just strutted his shit- FANTASTIC.
oh and 3) Gaga has now reached a level of trying too hard that is physically painful for me to endure (and I'm a fan!)

  28. I thought Drake was supposed to be the lock for new artist? Anyway, I think Drake and Beiber split the vote and Esperanza was able to win with the older voting crowd. I liked her clip.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Good theory, Paisley.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Spaulding is not a new artist. She has 2 CDs out and has been around for years.

Justin Beiber CLEARLY was not rewarded for his hard work.

Award shows are rigged. All of them.

    ReplyDelete
  31. When I saw the nominees on screen waiting for the result I thought Baby Biebs was probably thinking "Please let it be me. Please let it be me." Then I thought perhaps Florence was thinking, "Please don't let me lose to Bieber. Please don't let me lose to Bieber." When Esperanza's name was announced, Florence let out a big whoop. I thought that was nice.

Don't get these Bieber tweeners going nuts like that. Ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I feel like some of those songs have been out more than a year...

Bieber has the rest of his life to win a grammy. He's here for more than his 15 minutes Y'ALL.

I loved everyone in the alternative category...i can't believe I missed seeing Band of Horses :(

    ReplyDelete
  33. @mch: band of horses performed? i cant believe the black keys didnt :( or did they? seems im missing things lol. then again, i would expect the blogs to cover the only acceptable category.
