I'm Thinking About You New Zealand

Last night as I was enjoying some tequila and a few after dinner slices of bacon, I got some e-mails from readers in New Zealand alerting me to the earthquake that had just struck Christchurch. Ever since the blog began, readers in New Zealand have always been big supporters and I want you to know that I am thinking about you and hope everyone is safe. I have always thought of gossip as an escape from the day to day realities of life, and something such as this or the death of the family by pirates aboard their yacht or what seems like every country in the Middle East erupting shows that gossip no matter how scandalous, is just gossip and is not really life. Again, my thoughts are with all of you going through something a lot more important than gossip.

  2. Thanks for this, Enty. I have a lot of family on the North Island and they have all been affected by this. Several are flying down to help with recovery and rebuild. Thinking of you, my whanau :(

  4. I, too, have been thinking a lot about the Kiwis and their gorgeous country. All the New Zealanders I've met are wonderful people, and I am so, so sorry that they are experiencing such horror.

This is why I love you, Enty -- you care about stupid Hollywood bullshit and frivolity as much as the rest of us, but you've got a big heart and you realize what's MOST important.

  5. Ha! Valerie and I are comment twins. :-) See, Enty? Look how appreciated you are (by the sane people)!

  7. Definitely keeping New Zealand in my thoughts today and sending out love and best wishes to everyone there. I've been to NZ more times than I can count and it's a beautiful place with awesome people. Hoping for the best.

  9. Thanks Enty, it's nice to know you are thinking of those of us in New Zealand. While I am American, this tragedy has hit me hard because New Zealand has become my home these past 4 four years. I was in Christchurch not a month ago for 2 weeks, and there were still some big aftershocks from the earthquake on September 4th. It's so upsetting to see pictures of destroyed places I had just visited. I can't express the feeling of tragedy in the country, and know everyone here appreciates all the thoughts and prayers.

  10. I just want to echo the sentiments from everyone praising Enty for his big heart. Moments like this put everything in persepctive, and the fact that he makes note of it on his blog speaks volumes. It makes me wan to say: Lindsay, Miley, Kim, et. al.: shut the fuck up.

  12. Rocketqueen, I hope all of your family and friends are safe, as I do for everyone who has loved ones in New Zealand.

Let's hope miracles occur in the next few days and survivors are found.

Thoughts and prayers to all who have lost a loved one and to the people of New Zealand as they rebuild and deal with their grief.

  17. New Zealand is one of my favorite places to vacation; this is a truly horrible situation. I'm a native Californian and grew up with earthquakes; all of you New Zealanders have my prayers and best wishes. Christchurch is such a charming little city; it sickened me to see all the damage and hear about the many deaths.

Thanks Enty for keeping your South Pacific readers in mind.

  18. I'm native California too and after our Easter quake this past year, I felt just horrible for these poor people. Thanks for mentioning it, Ent.

  21. My thoughts and prayers to all of the New Zealanders, family and friends of the victims of the pirates, and all those affected by the unrest in the Middle East. This all really should make us grateful for what we have.

  22. I live on the New Madrid fault and earthquakes like this scare the crap out of me! My prayers are with all of you in New Zealand. I want very badly to visit your beautiful country. I really want to do one of the amazing walking tours that I've read about. Much love to the Kiwis.

  25. New Zealand and especially Christchurch are in my thoughts. I just returned from that area 2 months ago and I remember the many of the areas that are showing damage. Everyone should be lucky enought to visit New Zealand at least once in their lives. Please everyone in Christchurch be safe and we will keep you all in our thoughts.

  27. Thoughts and prayers going out to all those Kiwis. To those of you with family/friends may your loved ones be safe from harm.

  28. Praying for New Zealand. I will also make a donation.

  29. Sending good thoughts out to the Kiwis and all other CDANers struggling through bad weather, pirate attacks (the couple went to the church I'd go to if I still went), Middle East evacuations, job woes, etc. Enty, you have a big heart. So watch the bacon.

And BTW, posting this sincere note above the headline NOW THIS IS A SCANDAL is classic Enty... sublime and meaningful next to eye-rolling ridiculous. Giving thanks for all of you!

  30. Hello from Christchurch. Me and my family are ok but many in our city are not and the death toll grows. The central city where I live and work (but escaped) is devastated to an extent no person would ever want to imagine, and while our priority right now is basic services and rescuing those in imminent danger/trapped in rubble, in our hearts we fear for how we will even begin, or attempt, such a rebuild of our city, community and economy.
Thank you so much for your kind thoughts, all of you. They are much needed by all of us right now.

  31. Oh, Foxy. :-( I'm so sorry for you, your family, and your beautiful town. Thank goodness you're okay.

  32. @FoxyLoxy - so sorry for you and all the Kiwis that were affected - my thoughts and prayers are with you guys...

  33. New Zealand my thoughts are with you.

  34. FoxyLoxy, not to make light of how horrible things are for your town right now, but I saw my great-grandmother's home, Los Gatos, CA, go from being demolished by a quake to being rebuilt as good as it was before, so there's hope. When people join together for a cause, they can make miracles happen. And I trust that people around the world will contribute to help you rebuild.

  37. Hi
Kiwi living in Australia - am very touched by all the comments about Christchurch and NZ- to all those who say Americans don't know what's going on outside their country you guys are a testament to this not being true. Love Americans, America, CDANers, Enty, and of course my beautiful NZ.

  38. valeria/amoeteafloat- any way I can get in on that twin commenting action? Both of you, and Moosh, seem to always come out where I do-- like AMO says its nice when there are sane people.

FoxyLoxy- as others have stated our thoughts and prayers are with you and those close to you, and please keep you CDAN community posted when possible on what is actually going on on the ground (sometimes via the TV you only see the total best and worst so its hard to have a complete picture) and what could be done in terms of aid to be sent, etc that maybe some of us could personally do from here in conjunction w charities/churches/other organizations I'm sure we all belong to. Stay safe and well.

  39. Keeping New Zealand in my prayers. Thanks for the post, Enty.

What I've been hearing/seeing on the news reminds me of the horror of Haiti.
