Random Photos Part Two

The remaining original VJ's from the start of MTV.
Apparently this guy does not like the French President's policies.
Well, it does keep you from growing hair on your palms.
Paris and Blanket racing down the street. Paris has grown up a lot.
Everyone always loves Patrick Dempsey in a suit.
Prince William and Kate headed to Canada.
Jason Statham welcomes Rosie to the world of really bad movies.
Reese has her cast off.
Sienna Miller runs away from Tom Sturridge in Chicago.
If you do not know who this couple is, you need to leave work early, run home and watch My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding. For those of you in the know, Swanley on the left was arrested at, you guessed it, a wedding. This is his wife Josie.

  4. Octomom doesn't have enough money for her kids, but I'm looking at evidence of that tummy tuck and boob job she got post-birth. How revolting she is.

  5. Flove Big Fat Gypsy Wedding - just, NO GRABBING!

My mate is getting married in NYC next week - just her and the man - but we've all been winding her up about having a Gypsy wedding do when she's back, along with having the dress to match!

  6. ugh, octomom.

and on the topic of questionable mothers...i wonder if if little paris jackson ever feels debbie rowe's abandonment. such a lovely little girl. any woman would be honored to have her as a child. #justwondering

  7. My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding is fantastic.

Of course, I love Sister Wives too. I LOVE shows that show lifestyles of subcultures. Especially crazy ones.

  8. For the longest time I really did think his name was Blanket.

  9. His name isn't Blanket? It's nice to see them dressed as regular kids.

    Nina Blackwood looks tore up.

  10. Ashton in Brazil for two weeks. Must mean something ....

  11. I love My big fat gypsy wedding. They are just so over the top! It is a must watch everybody.

  12. Yeah, I got stuck in front of the TV during a Gypsy Wedding marathon last weekend. The wedding dresses and how the girls dress in general makes it such fantastic trainwreck television...and at the same time, it's kind of sad.

  13. Oh my God. Not only do I *remember* all those DJ's, but I can NAME them. All they need are the two Julie Browns in that shot.

Oh, and I always thought that Kurt Loder was a hot piece.

PSA to the younguns: Once Upon a Time, MTV was an innovative, creative, unique channel with great programming that didn't suck a gigantic choad. Crazy, but true.

Just reinforces the fact that I'm turning 32 next week. Yowza.

  14. I worked at MTV during it's inception, and later with the guys who had created the logo (which was a Very Big Deal at the time, it moved and changed) and still did the promos and advertising.

I want my, I want my MTV
I want my, I want my MTV

  15. Ida, happy birthday in advance. I just turned 40 on the 19th. I remember when MTV first hit the airwaves and what huge deal it was. I got my video fixes when I babysat since we didn't have cable. I also remember how MTV had a contest to color the logo. Does anyone remember that or am I really showing my age? It was when they would flash the MTV logo on the moon with all the different patterns and colors and whatnot. I loved when MTV actually showed music videos and they were these fantastic little mini movies. Bands and singers totally got into that and they were spectacular.

Okay, my jaunt down memory lane has to end and I need to get back to pretending to work at my desk...

  16. Seeing the VJs makes me realize how old I am.

  17. I'm with you, @Maja with a J. I got completely sucked into the marathon last weekend. I just couldn't look away. It was both fascinating and conpletely horrifying.

It's crazy how these Gypsy girls are supposed to be all virtuous and pure, and yet I've seen 'working girls' who dress more modestly.

There appears to be much more to this culture/lifestyle that the series portrays, and I think it's probably very dark and disturbing.

  18. Msgirl, I bet that was fun! I remember some of the logos, like the astronaut.

I'm older than Ida and M., neener neener :b

I soooo wanted to be Nina Blackwood. And I wanted to marry Adam Curry, not one of the orginals but still an early VJ.

  19. M -- Happy Belated Birthday to you, as well! My boyfriend recently turned 40, and it is WEIRDING HIM OUT. But you Geminis are basically ageless. You'll be juuuuuuust fine. :-)

"I also remember how MTV had a contest to color the logo. Does anyone remember that or am I really showing my age? It was when they would flash the MTV logo on the moon with all the different patterns and colors and whatnot."

    Yup. I remember. Clearly. Fondly.

I MISS THE OLD MTV SO MUCH!!! Like, there is an actual deep and nostalgic pang in my heart right now. I PHYSICALLY miss it. You know how there's a channel called VH1 Classic? They should have one called MTVintage. Just Say Julie! Downtown Julie Brown! Yo MTV Raps! Headbanger's Ball! 120 Minutes!

It's strange, because I feel as if The Real World was the beginning of the end when it comes to quality MTV programming in that it ushered in a deluge of worthless ~reality~ bullshit. But even the first few seasons of that show are *vastly* superior to most stuff you find on cable nowadays.

  20. where's the VJ that had the Hair? The blond guy? Can't remember his name. Adam?

  21. I was in college when MTV hit the cable waves, and I despised it for destroying what was left of people's imagination. Jello Biafra was right, except that it wasn't technically "on the air."

  22. @Snakeoiler -- "I was in college when MTV hit the cable waves, and I despised it for destroying what was left of people's imagination."

Well, *I*, for one, still have quite an active imagination. ;-) I wouldn't say MTV enhanced it, but it certainly didn't diminish it.

  23. I'm turning 40 in September and MTV was MY LIFE as a pre teen and teen! LOL
I would sit and watch it just all day long.
I remember that contest too, M!

  24. Yep yep! Video killed the radio star was an EVENT when that aired.
We used to get mad at the bus driver if we were too late to catch videos (ahh, the days when it would be announced "The new Madonna video will air exclusively at 4:10 tomorrow afternoon" etc) of course we didn't realize that it would show over and over after. No no. Had to see it first!
I think of all the VJ's I liked Kennedy the most.

Msgirl...so jealous:D Oh the stories you could tell..

  25. ok so what's Blanket's real name? sorry but I always thought that was his name...

I want my... I want my MTV I loved that song!

    Reese looks cute...

    Sienna frumpy...

Paris looks happy, sort of carefree...

I thought the French Prez was Sean Penn...

Any comments on the new Transformers? I hear that the new girl was horrible.

  27. Back in the day, I used to go to slumber parties. We'd wait up all night watching MTV hoping for a Duran Duran video. Good times.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Swanley? Hmm...I will be DVRing the next marathon per your suggestions.

  29. Paris looks GREAT! and so does Blanket!
Just watched MJ's freaking awesome doc/movie This Is It again the other day. Damn damn damn I cant believe he's gone.

I'm curious about the Gypsy Wedding ya'll are talking about- I've never heard of it...are they actually 'gypsyies'? Cause if so it would make more sense to call them Roma, as gypsy is much less PC...

And I'm 28 y/o and I remember vaguely Yo!MTV Raps and downtown Julie Brown. Mostly I remember the network just being a really cool place to watch creative music videos. It sucks getting older but I am soooo grateful I didnt have to grow up with 16 and Pregnant and Jersey Shore and SuperSweet 16 and all that totally toxic shit. I'll take a crappy Milli Vanilli music video any day of the week than flip to MTV and be subjected to tanned self absorbed drunk ho's humping and partying it up for the screen. Ugh. Video didnt kill the radio star- some assholes on the East Coast did :P

  31. I want my MTV! I remember August 1 1981 so well and it was days before my 11th birthday. I can't believe MTV is 30 this year.

We didn't have cable so I had to find a friend who did and watch Friday Night Videos on regular TV. Don't you remember the kids who had cable were so cool?

MTV seized to exist in 1992 when the first Real World came out. It was the beginning of the end.

It was sure a fun ride.

  32. I can't stand My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding. The weddings are lovely, but their culture leaves me in despair. The dresses are lovely, but they're under-educated and illiterate; their mortality rate is horrifying. In Ireland, over 50% of them don't even reach the age of 40.

They're actually called "Travellers" - not "Gypsies" and it's a name they use for themselves.

  33. thx for the love for Martha Martha Quinn- she was always my fave and seems to be in the best shape of the original gang.

I did like Kennedy while she was a VJ but since then she is way too political for me (in a way that is not appealling to me personally)
