Mahalia Jackson's Family - Not Fans Of Fantasia Barrino

When former American Idol winner, Fantasia Barrino was first offered the role of gospel singer Mahalia Jackson, the heirs of Mahalia were pretty happy about the decision. Apparently though now that Fantasia is pregnant with the baby of a married man they are not so thrilled that she will be portraying the gospel singer. I could see why they would be upset, especially as this whole Fantasia being with the married guy has seemed to go on forever. Plus, Fantasia originally told everyone she was just gaining weight for the role and forgot to mention the whole pregnancy thing. It was only the fact that she just could not hide it any longer that she came clean about it. Because Fantasia did get pregnant, producers had to push back the start of the film by six months and now Fantasia is making extra demands for when she comes back which has producers maybe looking elsewhere. If I am Fantasia I get to the set as soon as I can because a movie beats a reality show or touring on cruise ships.

  2. fantasia was incredible on AI and i was so glad she won. she's immensely talented. BUT, she gets horrible advice and can't seem to get control of her personal life. that big, beautiful voice will go to waste if that doesn't change.

  3. I can't stand her voice -- it's all screaming and no tone at all.

"Summertime" is one of the best performances ever on Idol. Plenty of nuance with that one. Fantasia's 'going gospel' singing isn't to everyone's tastes but she can sing.

That said, her personal life has always been a hot mess. And no one in her family will tell her because they're too busy trying to mooch from her. Such a shame.

  6. All the money in the world can't buy class. Or self respect.

  7. This is terrible casting. She did play Miss Celie in "The Color Purple" stageplay, which was ok since it wasn't that much of a stretch. But Mahalia Jackson was a woman of great faith, grace and dignity. Fantasia is a woman of...the opposite of all the above.

  9. Somebody needs to tell her what's causing these babies.

Layna, her performance of Summertime blew me away.

  10. wow, I can think of another Idol contestant who would be perfect for the roll.....but I don't think she would be willing to put the weight back on.

  11. i would be appalled if i were mahalia jackson's family that the person chosen to portray her life is a vile, trashy loser. i'm sorry, i do feel for fantasia and all her sob stories...but at some point you have to stand up and be accountable for your choices...she has the rep she has b/c she's painted herself into that corner--and then diva on top of that. puhlease.

Pookie, you feel the same about Lindsay Lohan now? Is she a vile, trashy loser too? Since you were so gong-ho about believing she will turn it around and the only one left here who "feels" for Linds.

  15. hi Melody, thanks for asking! yes. i absolutely have a soft spot for LL. i may not be "gong ho", but i am gung ho that she will pull it together. and i'm ok w/ being the only one here that "feels" that way, as you state. since you're so good about remembering my post history, i hope you'll be good about remembering that i have also said LL needs to be accountable for her choices as well.

Calling someone "vile trash" for getting knocked up by a married man and not necessarily handling their life as others would like, seems a tad much.

But hey, at least Linds has gotten into car wrecks that could have potentially killed someone. Of course, some believe out of wedlock births are the ills of society. So maybe they are even steven. Oh well...

    Whaa...?

I'd say the heirs have every right to pick who they want representing their family member. If they don't want FB, I'm sure there are plenty of talented singers that could fit the bill.

  18. Fantasia may have an amazing voice but she comes across as uneducated, ignorant and class-less.

I base this off some statements she's said in the media as well as her actions.

I think the heirs of Mahalia Jackson have every right to want another person to represent the gospel singer. Just because someone has good voice doesnt make them good enough to represent a gospel icon.

  19. I'm with Jasmine. I think Fantasia comes off as ignorant and class-less. I wouldn't want her to portray any of my relatives either. I also do not like Fantasia's voice that much. I think Jennifer Hudson would have been a much better choice.

Fantasia was also pretty bad at making her Color Purple performances. She was off more than she was on the stage for that production.

I think Fantasia will be out of this part.
