Keith Urban Having Throat Surgery

Keith Urban has become the latest in a growing line of singers who are having throat surgery. Keith announced yesterday that he is having surgery to remove a polyp from his vocal chords so will have to cancel performances for the next several months and will be on complete vocal rest for at least a month also. So, that means when Nicole Kidman is yelling at him about something he can always just point to his throat and shrug his shoulders and hold up a sign that says, "We will just have to talk about this next month." Then he can turn back to the television. Keith has canceled concerts through the end of January. I think at the Grammy Awards there should be a song sung by every person who has had throat surgery in the past month or two. Adele, John Mayer and Keith Urban can all get up and sing together. It might actually be a pretty good combination.

  1. At this rate, we will know who MV is by process of elimination!

  2. So is "throat surgery" industry code for rehab or something? Or in Adele's case, treatment for her anxiety? Or am I reading too much into this? Are polyps on the vocal cords common amongst professional singers? Seems plausible.

  3. Sorry for the 20 questions, was just wondering if anyone else interpreted this the way I did.

  4. I don't think throat surgery is the new "exhaustion and dehydration". It is not uncommon in singers, especially singers who are untrained and go on tour without many breaks. A lot of famous singer end up having vocal training after becoming established stars in order to avoid voice problems. (Madonna, Celine Dion)

  7. I am not surprised by this. He has has had vocal problems before and had to cancel. Just saw him perform at the beginning of October and did not see signs of him needing to go to rehab.

I am a fan of Keith's and have been since 2003. I saw him in Atlanta right before he went to rehab and when he did, it made sense on why he was acting the way he was.

  8. Electric Warrior - Polyps or nodules on the vocal cords are actually a common occurrence, especially for those who sing for a living. I remember Joe Elliott (Def Leppard) and country singers Kathy Mattea and Patty Loveless all had surgery for such issues. Also, hard to forget Julie Andrews had a botched operation and that is why she is no longer able to sing.

It could be used as a cover, but is also very plausible. Especially in Adele's case where she has admitted to not being a trainer vocalist and actually liking her voice to sound a little "rough."

  10. My mom was a teacher & she developed polyps as well. I don't think it's a cover for rehab (at least this time).
