Oprah Lets Herself Be Worshipped But Not Touched

Oprah had her Christmas party for OWN employees on Thursday night and it was quite the event. According to The NY Post, Oprah let everyone see her at the party. When I mean see, I mean she was visible through her phalanx of security people, but there was no way you were ever going to touch her or get close to her. I don't understand her. There are 200 of her employees. That is it. 200. They work for her. She wants a successful company. Does it really hurt her to go shake the hands of all 200 of her employees? Really? This is not how you run a successful company. I understand if she had 10,000 employees, but 200 is like a kegger at my house when the parents are gone. I am beginning to see why her company is having so much trouble. As Oprah was leaving she walked past a photo booth and one of her employees asked if Oprah would like to take a photo with her and Oprah said no. I don't understand the attitude. Oh, and she did not pay for the party either so it is not like she was doing any great shakes or favors for her employees. A liquor company paid for it all.

  1. That's disappointing and doesn't seem like Oprah. Maybe she was sick and didn't feel good or something?

  2. sounds like Steve Jobs had more interaction with his employees then Oprah does.

Maybe she is mad at them for not making her network a success and now she has to go back and work instead of hanging out all day in Montecito.

  3. Royalty is not big on being with the common folk.

  4. Prima Donna attitude, but Oprah is a class genius on how she gets everybody else to pay for all the swag she "gives away" The Trip to Australia paid for by Qantas and the Aussue Taxpayers, the Cars she "gave away" paid for by General Motors. and so on. Pure Genius. I think that her current prima donna attitude and her network, will be the start of her downfall, eventually she lose her endorsement credibility and that's been the secret to her success, well being down to earth and in touch with the common person. My prediction is that 2012 will not be a good year for her and her popularity will continue to slide.

  5. this was probably a party for the "below the line" employees. I don't think Rosie or Dr. Phil was at this party.

The makeup artists and grips were lucky to just gaze on her.

  6. This is not about Oprah, this weekend I saw a trailer for Sacha Baron Cohen's new movie. In it he has sex with a prostitute and after telling her it was good he asks if her pay is enough...she is staring at a Rolex and a pile of jewels. She picks out a good sized stone and says "What's this a ruby, what do you think I am a Kardashian?" to which he replies all apologetically "No, no, no you are much less hairy".

I laughed out loud as did others in the theater.

  7. maybe if own was successful she would feel like cheering them and patting them on the back, but since it's basically a fail she isn't impressed with anyone or just disappointed in it.

  8. i know this is an unpopular view of Oprah, but i really think she is a diva...a very smart, very rich diva. all my friends think i am crazy wench for thinking that, but i calls 'em as i see 'em, and that is the vibe i get from her.

  9. "this is not how you run a successful business" um...i really don't think Oprah needs business advice from any of us. Some pointers on manners, perhaps, but the woman is pretty successful all on her own *L*.

  10. Ugh. While I have much respect and admiration for Oprah for the empire that she has built, THIS is yet another example of why I don't really like her as a human being.

  11. del riser; to be fair, kimmy has made it known that ALL of her non-head hair has been lasered off...

don't like oprah. 2 interviews long ago did it. one was a rape victim who had worked to get the man she accused released from jail. the man had forgiven her and oprah was HORRIBLE to her. and the second was her interview of detective mark fuhrman. if you saw it, i'm sure you'd remember.

  12. I guess I should be thankful to never know whether or not fame and massive wealth would make me behave like an entitled asshole..

It must be pretty easy for humans to gain an overinflated sense of themselves, but when it comes right down to it, we all piss in the same pot.

  13. If it's any help, I think OWN is dead. It has been on a year and still no traction. She is harking her show debut Jan 1, but all you hear are crickets. I still love her magazine though 'cause I like Martha Beck.

  14. Doesn't surprise me in the least. The cult will apologize for her.

  15. I have to second everything Picasso One said, and have felt that way for a long time. She may be a successful businesswoman, but I doubt she's a very happy person.

I'm in the minority. I think she is a big phony. She's a businesswoman, yes. A smart woman, yes. But I absolutely do not buy all of the touchy feely find yourself and the aha crap she touts.

  18. Nothing pisses me off more than someone who thinks they are better than others. How old is she? She's been on earth for all these years and that's the greatest wisdom that she's been able to attain? That she's better?

  19. Mama Mia! You hit the nail on the head. Oprah is new money and new money always treats common people the same way; like dirt. She forgot where she came from, dumped tons of money into a school in Africa...I mean not for nothing those kids need it but what about the kids in Appalachia who go to bed hungry and live in extreme poverty? What about all the failed public schools all over America that desperately need funding? She's a big phony who does it all for publicity. Hate her.

  20. People LOVEEE to tear down successful women. Especially other women.

She has done so much for those kids in AFRICA and other charities I think we can let this one misstep pass.

  21. How many times have I read about her taking her entire staff at Harpo plus their families on expensive vacations.

  22. i have never understood why so many people look to her as a fountain of knowledge on how to life their lives

  23. @Lelaina Pierce, right on point. Couldn't have said it better myself.

  24. I'm still trying to figure out why she won't promote her SiriusXM channel, EVER. She collected the millions of dollars paycheck from them and ran.

  25. I noticed years ago that she only hugs her A-list celebrity guests. When a mere common-folk guest would outstretch their arms for an embrace, Oprah would grab both of their hands in a firm grip and shake them, thus deflecting the hug.

  26. Maybe she's finally going through menopause. Doesn't it turn you into a crazy, angry bitch?

  27. I am torn. I don't really like her because she seems to have completely lost touch with reality and the real people who heLped her get to where she is. The behind the scenes footage of her last year with her talk show makes her look like a completely self centered out of touch individual.

And yet another part of me is like, "how great is it that a Business woman became so successful that she completely lost touch with reality? Good for her means good for all women!"

  28. Way back in 1986, I worked at the Chicago Tribune. Oprah was just rising in popularity at that point, nothing near her later fame, and she was the guest speaker at our Christmas party. She came to the podium all flustered, said "um yeah, you all are the...what? The Tribune? Oh right, okay, merry Christmas Tribune people." and went on to say a few vague generic lines, most of it sounding very pissed off about something(?), and left. We were all like, "what was THAT?!?"

Since then, I've never been able to take her seriously.

  29. I am always surprised that a woman so full of herself needs to eat at all. But clearly she is snagging every passing biscuit! I'm so glad her impact on the impressionable is ebbing at last.

  30. @Ashlea: I though I was the only one who's resentful of celebrities who spend their money overseas trying to straighten out other people in other countries when we have massive poverty RIGHT HERE. We have people eating rocks for dinner, having children with their siblings, and living in rusty corrugated lean-tos but we're spending our money to solve others' problems?! Shriek!

That's why Switzerland appeals to me. But that's why Switzerland won't have me: they wanna make sure their own are cared for. They don't need new people sucking on their tit

  31. The stories about the Big O being cold and standoffish are not new. A lot of people who have met her have said this, and she likes to drink. I've always thought she was a closet alcoholic, but that's just me.

  32. Is it just more or is Oprah starting to look like Star Jones?

  33. On that behind the scenes show they did of her last season, at the end, they showed one of the producers---a guy who had been with her for years--trying to speak to her--to kind of say thank you....whatever...and they showed him following Oprah into her private elevator--he'd worked there for years and had never ridden in it, lol.

  34. Wow, thats not the image she tries to project. How weird.
