Adele Says She Is Taking 5 Years Off

Want to know what a record company or manager hates to hear? That their 6 time Grammy award winning singer wants to take the next five years off from singing and recording and touring so she can spend time with her boyfriend. Well, that is what Adele told Vogue. She says she plans on taking the next for or five years off because otherwise she will f**k up her relationship. I don't believe her and they probably caught her being silly or in a bad moment because if she walks away it would be very tough to get back in the game. Yes, she has a great voice but you need to keep on being out there. You need to have your face and your voice out there and tour constantly. Will she want to give all of that up? I do think that because Katy Perry was on tour the entirety of her 18 month marriage that probably had something to do with the breakup. It is tough to be away from someone for 17 of 18 months. It is estimated that in the 18 months they were married, Russell and Katy spent 45 days together. That is nothing.

  1. But five years? That seems like a long time. How about just a year? Five years seems extreme.

  2. Sounds like an excellent negotiation position to me. Allows Adele to keep some control over her life and still appears that the record company 'won' something.

  3. That's how she feels now, it will change depending on how the relationship goes and how busy he is (going on the assumption that it will last).
If he is busy doing his thing she will be writing and and working on something new...and also the offers will start pouring in, so something is bound to tempt her.

  5. I think she, started dating this guy around the time she had surgery. Maybe she is talking in haste. A one or two year break is reasonable, five years is a bit much.

  6. A year might not be so bad, given the maturity of her audience, but five seems a little extreme. Coming off a six-Grammy win, somebody's "team" is having panic attacks right about now..!

  7. She's probably half-joking, though she probably wants to take some time off. I agree that this is also probably part of her getting into position to negotiate a new contract with her record company.

  8. I absolutely love Adele's new album. However, I am certain the record industry is going to ruin it for me. I call it the Jagged Little Pill syndrome. I had that quintessential Alanis Morrisette record long before radio & MTV got a hold of it and I loved every single song on it. But then radio & TV played it to death (and they still do) and now I cannot stand hearing any of those songs. I fear this is what will happen with "21". And the fact that Adele is now saying she won't be making new music any time soon ensures that her record company will release every single one of the songs on that album and play the shit out of them.

  9. Look at Sade - she releases a new CD every 5-8 years, tours, and then goes back to hibernating in England until the mood strikes her again. And yet every CD sells 10 million + worldwide, and every show is a sell out.

Not many people could get away with that career model, but Adele just might be able to make it work. She's not dependant on flavor-of-the-week songwriters, or the hottest musical trends.

  10. I will be curious to see what happens to Adele. Will Norah Jones' syndrome hit: Grammy darling, and then the next year comes ho-hum, ho-hum and ho-hum. I'm glad Adele's second album is The One rather than her first because I feel like an artist is more likely to fizzle right away after a massive Grammy sweep on the debut album rather than experiencing a buildup to Grammy domination. Hopefully that makes sense?

Anyway, I think she's already experiencing saturation of her music. My middle school and high school piano students are already "over" her. Hee.

I don't wear Adele-goggles. She's talented and I like some of her songs but I don't worship at her altar.

When I read shit like that, I get a headache from rolling my eyes. While the rest of us get up every morning and go to work because we have to, she's going to take five years off to work on her relationship.

  13. I think it's a mistake to do ANYTHING that serious for your S.O. when you're only 24 years old. Yikes.

  14. That is absolutely not the only reason Katy and Russel broke up. That greasy wonk-eyed Brit was wriggling out of his leather pants for any of the following types of women:

95% that are not considered clinically dead and
    5% that are still warm

  15. She has to be kidding. If not, that's just stupid. The public is way too fickle to "wait" for her.

I have a feeling that she's the type of girl that will put life on hold (and everyone and everything in it) just to please the man she's with. That's lame if that's the deal here.

  16. It's a Vogue article, who knows how long ago the actual interview was. Pretty disgusted that they photoshopped her so much in the photos, but Vogue is the bible of superficiality so I guess it should be expected.

  17. Anyone else notice how YOUNG Adele is?!?!?! Wow she is like 23 or 24 I think.

Which also goes to say that at 23-24 you tend to say whatever and 6 months can seem like "5 years" so I think she was probably just speaking loosely.

  18. She may have made enough money to suit her, and extended fame may not be that important to her. Maybe for her, happiness is settling down and starting a family. There's nothing wrong with that and it sure as hell doesn't make her stupid.

  19. Hunter...she called her CD "21" for a reason. Just like she called her first CD "19". :)

  20. Lilly Allen walked away young to be married and finally have a baby.

I get the feeling Adele isn't in to hard work and touring for 2 years isn't her cup of tea. Plus she sings live her voice can't take it unless 1/2 her show is lip synching or voice tracked like Katy Perry or Madonna. Smoking doesn't help either.

She quit her first US Tour becuase she wante to be with a boyfriend. She is like a Twilight novel, all that matters is you have a boyfriend. But that is the folly of youth and she has her path to take. Hope it is all worth it in the end.

  21. I honestly can't even name one of her songs but taking 5 YRS off when the height of your fame is just beginning is probably not a good career move. By then she will be old news and forgotten.

I am not young and i am seriously sick of.and burnt, out on Adele.

  23. Damn, posted a great work of art and it's not appearing!

    So, if this duplicates, sorry..

I think this is more of a 'spur of the moment' comment actually. She may take it easy, but she won't take that much time out. I hope...

Moose: Adele has more talent in her eyelashes than Sade could ever have. I saw Sade at least 3 times with the band she played with, Pride in the early 80's here in London. The other singer, Barbara was magnificent, better voice, better range, better dance, better everything. She was not, however, sleeping with Robert Elms who had managed to hoodwink most of 80's Britain that he had anything sensible to say or contribute to the music scene... ass.. When Sade went solo, he engineered Stuart Matthewman to leave and write for Sade. Stuart is a darling, and brilliant songwriter. The songs he wrote for Barbara were genius... and Sade couldn't sing them, so Barbara's solos were phased out to highlight Sade more.

  24. I think Adele's talent is so unique and genuine that her fans will wait for her.

  25. @MonstersInc, my husband works away half the time, best of both worlds. Time to myself, stable relationship, time with him. Having written that, he is lovely and I would like him home more often, but this is what I signed up to. Don't get the becoming your boyfriend/husband either.

  26. I don't know about 5 years - that's a long time - but I think she definitely is talented enough to take a nice long break and release a new album later on. Like someone else said, maybe she is happy with what she has accomplished and doesn't feel the need to stick around to milk her fame.

  27. I think its kinda cool that she's willing to just throw in the towel like that and have other priorities, but there's got to be a middle ground... a light touring schedule/keep recording and release the albums as they come naturally? I'm kinda over hearing her everywhere and having her be the new darling, I remember listening to 19 back in the day and wondering why it wasn't more popular... now I wish she was still a little under the radar.

  28. I swear I read the interview this "news" came from, and she did *not* say this. I think this was from the part about "where do you see yourself in 10 years" and it was a comment in there about being married with kids, not working for 5 or 10 years... blah blah blah
Think Enty might have been on a bacon high when he read this.
And I think it's all wishful thinking anyway.
The first time a new artist has a bank load of money and they think they are set for life, but don't work for a year and see how fast it dries up and you are taking National Anthem gigs and guest spots on American Idol to start the process all over again.
    Accountants don't pay for themselves.

  29. I don't know Sade is notorious for disappearing from the scene for 5+ years between albums, granted she has a loyal fan base and she is from a different time but I think the formula is still the same.

  30. After watching her 60 Minutes interview I think she'd be fine out of the limelight. I don't think she's all that comfortable with fame. It's a high price to pay and not everyone is willing to sell their soul.

  31. @nolachickee - If it's her choice to take a break from singing and focus on her personal life then good for her. Equally if it's her choice to keep recording and performing then we should applaud that too. I'm only going to start yelling when she stops performing because her boyfriend is bitching at her.

And personally I think its a smart career move. As others have said, her music is reaching saturation at the moment. Her amazing talent and voice will still be there in a few years time.

  32. I hope she does take some time off, although not 5 years.

I think the frenetic pace of today's industry is really taking a toll on people like Katy Perry, Gaga, and Rihanna. They all seem to be on the edge of a breakdown.

  33. I'm not an Adele fan, but this reminds me of Norah Jones. Remember how everyone loved her. I doubt Adele will take five years off, but maybe one year for her voice.

  34. I mildly liked one or two of Adele's songs, but ... not wanting to make people angry, I must ask: Doesn't anyone ever get tired of the "Oh my gosh it's a Brit who sings American blues music?" thing? I get tired of it real quick. Yes, she hits the notes and, yes, it's okay music. But it's just the same old retro schtick that everyone does. I don't wish her harm, but if she wants to retire, I completely support her.

  35. The chances are really good that shes made enough money to live comfortably for the rest of her life without working another day. And really its worked great for Sherry Stringfield, oh wait, nm.

I know people adore her, and I think shes very talented but, Ive heard Rolling in the Deep so many times I cant change the channel fast enough when it comes on. I still dont care for My Heart Will go On and I have a feeling RitD wont be any different.

  36. Typically, this wouldn't happen as recording contracts are signed with a quota to be fulfilled and a timeframe (e.g.: 3 albums in 4 years) with a clause for buyout and insurance issued on the artist for any unforseen medical issues.
Also, an artist of this magnitude (Class A as they are referred to in legal contracts) typically has anywhere from 5-10 employees that are reliant on the artist to be working (including her touring band). If she quit for 5 years NO ONE would trust her to ever work for her again. It would be entirely selfish to literally leave them in the lurch.
And finally, typically artists (Class A) are booked 12 months out (although respite is given for her current vocal troubles...she probably wasn't heavily booked). She does have tour make up dates she has to fulfill and probably signed an agreement with ticket agent and promoters.
Her agents/managers/financials would rather her be heartbroken again (and do anything to save their job) so she churns out more writing material.
(wow, this blog comment thing is fun...2 times ever in 1 week)...lol

  37. K:
I read your comments about Sade above, and while you might be correct in some regard, the fact is that Helen Folasade Adu has been one of the biggest artists in the world for nearly 30 years. And I think most musicians would give anything to have her career. She has also done a wonderful job of staying out of the headlines. And each project, ever since "Diamond Life" has been a huge international success.

Are there other more talented singers? Of course. And would those singers have benefitted from what you allege to be the promotional efforts of someone you slept with? Sure. But you cannot take away her achievements, and her tremendous career. It takes talent to get to, and stay where, she has been for nearly three decades.

  38. Moose: Of course Sade has kept her career for 30 years, because she's been very clever and not overloaded the market. Her talent has been carefully engineered to keep her there. She's not a bad singer, interesting voice, exotic looks (definitely for London in the early 80's, trust me) That's not an argument. I'm not saying she would NOT have been where she is today if it were not because who she slept with. But it certainly helped things along at the time...

I'm saying the whole thing from the beginning stank, and I can say that because I was there and saw it unfold before my eyes. The arrogant 'music journo' boyfriend, the 'band' manager who in reality was just Sade's manager - bugger the rest of them! - under that 'music journos' thrall and really only acted in whatever tallied with Elms wishes ...

Alas, this is a story all too often played out in the past and no doubt will continue to be so, with variations.

BTW, apart from the odd diva moment, Sade was actually a very nice girl, always pleasant.

Seeing her live was always a great disappointment for me personally, from the first time in the upper room at The Salisbury Pub in Barnet (before which she had been played up as something gobsmackingly/flabbergastinly AMAZING), through to The Bull & Gate in Kentish Town, right up to seeing Pride downstairs at Ronnie Scotts. Over that year, she did not improve or impress. That's not to say she doesn't impress others. And good luck to her. But no Sade has ever made my music collection..

  39. She's already retracted this statement.

P.S. Apparently, Kelly Cutrone called Karl out on Twitter for calling her fat and he issued an apology.

@Susan, middle and high school students are idiots. You should know this. I'm ashamed I was once a teenager they get on my nerves so much. They get a case of the growns when they're 12 these days even though, in reality, they won't have a fucking clue until they're AT LEAST 25. At least. I commend you for having the strength to put up with that day in, day out.
