Cuba Gooding's Dad Asked Tom Cruise If He Was Gay

I don't know why Graham Norton continues to have Cuba Gooding Jr. on as a guest so often. He is on Graham more than he would ever be on Letterman or Kimmel or Conan. Leno would put him on as often as he wanted as long as he kissed Jay's butt long enough. Anyway, if you have BBC America, you can watch this Saturday and Cuba relates how on the set of Jerry Maguire, Cuba's dad hugged Tom and told him he loved him and then asked if Tom Cruise was gay. Tom laughed and said, "no." Cuba then kicked his dad off the set for the rest of the film. Cuba's dad obviously needs to be a tabloid reporter.

  3. Lol...I met Cuba Gooding Sr. in NYC and had dinner with him and my friend. He sang the song "Everybody Plays the fool". Very down to earth guy. Having met him, I could see him asking Tom Cruise if he were gay.

  4. Apparently we now know what Graham Norton's type is.

  5. Not long ago, I was talking to someone about Cuba Jr. and wondered what could he have done so bad, that his career is this non-existent.

Now I know. Daddy committed the ultimate no-no.

  9. I have a story about Tommy boy. Probably about 10 years ago a friend of mine had a meeting set up with Tom and his production company to work on an upcoming film together. Unfortunately my friend was late to the meeting by two minutes. Once arrived, meeting continued and everything went well. They even had a 2nd meeting set up. So show up for the 2nd meeting, waiting.... get a call, Tom is running late, waiting... another call- running late... finally after Hours of waiting, Tom actually calls and has them put him on speaker... and says "Maybe this will teach you to show up on time and oh by the way you aren't getting the job".

  10. So the point is I can see him not being too happy with Cuba and his father. At least Cuba won an Oscar.

  11. Jessi, that sucks about your friend but my philosophy on set (albeit the small commercial world) is if you're on time, you're late.

  12. Its a terrible shame that these types of politics go on in hollywood. I would much rather have seen 10 more Cuba Jr movies than many of the other so called actors that have been making movies.

  13. @Jessi, that's a great story, thanks!

Rumors have always abounded about Tom being a control freak. I can totally imagine him saying "it puts the moisturizer on its skin or it doesn't get the job..." etc.

  14. They could be twins, so now we know Cuba will look exactly like Cuba when he's older.
Yeah, I can see Tommy boy being a super freak about someone making HIM wait. He may have thought Cuba had said something to his Dad to make him ask this question.
Tommy is a small, amall, man.

  16. Tommy is a dick. And a bully. But now I see what the hell happened to Cuba.

  17. Cuba may not get the best roles out there, but I will see anything he is in. He chooses his movies wisely.

And for some reason, there is an emergence of movies with strong black roles. I hope Cuba has a comeback :)

  18. I don't have anything to add to this other than holy shit they look alike. I had to look closely to figure out who was the dad!!!

  19. That's kind of sad if Tom blacklisted him in H'wood. :(

I'm looking forward to see Cuba's new movie, Red Tails after hearing an interview on the radio w/ George Lucas.

I LOVE "Everybody Plays the Fool."

  20. Cuba's career isn't over. It never really was. He's been acting steadily for over 20 years. He chose some wrong movies to star in but I'm sure he makes very good money. He's never going to headline a superhero movie but he'll still be working for a long time.

    Woah.. Tom's a D*ck..

  22. I thought Cuba was his Dad when I first saw the picture. If Tom didn't want to work with someone who was late, he should have been professional and said so. Dick move.

  23. Can you imagine being MARRIED to someone like Tom if the above story is true? Ugh. Soul destroying. No room for error.

  24. Cuba winning the Oscar probably pissed off Tommy as much as Gooding Sr's question. He'd probably give Katie's right arm for an Academy Award.

  25. That's prolly the real reason why you don't see enough Cuba. Winning and having twin lookalike dad asking that question. And two minutes should not be enouh to warrant such unprofessional, ungentlemanly behaviour such as that. Truly some people have a good excuse like being held up at the lot entrance or parking. If he offered apologies and Butt Boy accepted he should be a man of his word.

  26. TommyBoy always reminded me of the Patrick Bergin role in Sleeping with the Enemy. If the towels don't line up right, he'll snap. He's wound-up WAY too tight.

  27. Tom needs to get over himself and realize that he's NEVER going to get an Oscar--between his belief system and (most likely) behavior such as was described above, he's pissed off WAY too many people in the business over the years. Oh, they won't say anything to his face, because they don't dare, or because they're being polite, but in the privacy of their homes, looking at the AMPAS ballots? People gave Sally Field a lot of crap for the "you really, really like me!" business, but she was dead on with that; yes, the quality of your performance matters, but if people don't like you, you WILL NOT win an Oscar, and not even Harvey Weinstein's best campaign can change that. (There's a reason Nicole Kidman has her Oscar now, and it's not just because she did a decent job in The Hours--it was a combination of a sympathy vote for having been treated badly by Tom, and a collective upraised middle finger in his general direction. Karma can be such a bitch sometimes... ;-)
