Matt Lauer Makes The Right Move - Stays On Today

For the first time in over a decade, Good Morning America finally beat Today in the ratings yesterday. Despite that, Matt Lauer knows Katie Couric is not going to be there next week and signed a long term deal to stay as a host on Today. That is totally the right move. Let me explain. Lesson number one if you are on a hit show and getting paid an obscene amount of money, you never leave. Ever. Never ever. You have side projects? Great, do them on the side and don't let them become your full time job. If you are ready to retire, then retire. I'm ok with a celebrity leaving a hit show if they want to retire, but don't think you are going to be a bigger star or do better on your own show or a different show. Hello Katie Couric and the CBS Evening News. Think she would like to do that again? Now, if Matt said he was tired of waking up at 3am everyday and cannot do it anymore, then great, move on, but he was thinking of going the whole do my own show and become a bigger star and he finally got smart and realized he had a sure thing going and was making tons of money. Have you noticed how suddenly after a flurry of stories about his wife there has not been word one in a long time. I think the source for all the anorexic and marriage trouble stories was cut off at the knees.

  1. Whew! I didn't really want to unsubscribe to the Today podcast

  2. The Today Show has been a shit show this week. It's not surprising that GMA beat it in the ratings. If you look at the show's FB page, there has been non-stop criticism of Palin, Octomom and Kim Kardashian. I don't know who is making these decisions, but they need to be stopped.

I was raised watching the Today Show. I literally have not watched the others, but if there is more crap like there was this week, I will be switching to GMA.

  3. Matt Lauer, I can stomach. Ann Curry needs to go!!!! She is completely awful. She should stick to investigative journalism...

  4. I thought you were going to write that he made the right move and finally came out!
I'm old enough to remember when Captain Kangaroo was on in the time slot these shows now occupy. Far superior programming, I think. Or I did then, anyway.

  5. I don't watch news programs and have only seen/heard of this guy, but recently I did catch him interviewing someone and he was weird and spazy and sort of annoying. Sort of like me, lol.

  6. I'm a little scared of the photograph. Disturbing.

  7. I am sure they pay him a ridiculous amount of $. He'd be an idiot to leave.

  8. @jes7o, Ann Curry lays it on WAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYY too think when she does human interest stories. She tries so hard to be emotional.

Also, she needs a stylist. Her clothes are ridiculous.

  9. ...too thick, I mean.

  10. But EmEyeKay, Paris has never looked so "hawt!"

  11. Beth - rumor has it that Ann is on her way out. Time will tell. I can't stand her and all her fawning.

  12. Amen, @Beth! Her outfits are atrocious!

  13. Is this a hint at the talk show host that is a mean drunk and had the stylist fired for suggestions hair products?

I think the source for all the anorexic and marriage trouble stories was cut off at the knees.

  14. @ Peridot - I was wondering about that too. I wonder if Ann was the source for those stories.

  15. Actually, I think it was Natalie Morales (which bugs me because I like her). If you notice, when Ann can't host, instead of moving Natalie over from the news desk, they bring in Savannah Guthrie. Natalie almost never appears in the same segments with Matt unless all 4 of them are together.

  16. I've alway thought Matt was very lucky. Good to know he realizes it.

  17. After years with Today, I switched to GMA quite some time ago. Matt and Katie were a good pair. I'm sorry, but Ann is not good. Let her have two minutes opening and closing Primetime and leave it at that or bring back my man Stone Phillips. Hoda and Kathie Lee are a hoot a little later in the day, but when I wake-up and need a little news I start with Robin and George on GMA.

  18. @snowstorms - actually, his (fake) hair looks better than hers does half the time! (btw, it took me WAY too long to figure out he's supposed to be Paris.)

    I don't remember anorexic/marriage trouble stories.

Dammit, now I'm looking at his photo again. Don't like it.

    1. @EmEyeKay, I was born into a family of chihuahua lovers who dressed their dogs long before I was born - so I am a "wittle-bit-sensitive" (definitely meant in a joking tone), that numnuts uses them as props. I actually rescued 2 from a breeder this wknd because they were wanting to sell these 3lb girls as breeders. Tonight i found them a new home w/a good friend - just in time for Easter!

However, I am sorry you felt compelled to look at the pic again...lol a tranny Paris is still better then the vapid waste of space she is!

  19. Beth- I was just thinking the same thing about the Today show this morning. I changed the channel when I heard about the KK interview that they were hyping. It was the main story. Do they really think KK is a "get"?

  20. Costume? That is how Matt looks to me every morning.

  21. I like Matt a lot and have been a long time Today watcher who quit when Ann Curry moved over next to him.

Can we find a nice promotion to some other show for her and get Matt someone decent to co-host. I wish Hoda would do it---she is better than that fourth hour show.

  22. Cute chihuahua! And add me to the cannot-tolerate-Ann-Curry train. When I watch her, I'm reminded of the scenes in Broadcast News with William Hurt.

  23. I too use to watch the Today Show, but switched when Meredith Viera took over for Katie. Her voice was so dead and monotone, I had to move over to GMA. I've recently started watching the CBS morning news since they've added Charlie Rose and Gail King.

  24. @nichole - I have never noticed that, but I will start paying attention now. I really like Natalie too so I hope it's for another reason.

I am another one who isn't an Ann Curry fan. She needs help in the wardrobe department.

Does anyone watch Today on the weekends? My husband and I think Amy Robach always looks hungover.

  25. Wasn't there a blind item about Matt and Natalie having an affair?? Matt also hates Ann and she is on her way out.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I liked Ann reading headline news & Katie or Meredith co-hosting.

I was suspicious of Natalie & Matt a couple of years ago when they were awfully flirty with one another. I do not want Natalie taking over Ann's spot.

They need to hire fresh talent.

  27. I thought do, too, Peridot.

  28. The gossip guy on the morning radio show I listen to said that Ann Curry was going to be fired this weekend. So we'll see.

  29. I have switched from Today to CBS morning show. The Today show used to be under the news division, but it is now under the entertainment division and has been getting steadily worse over the years.

I love Charlie Rose. The first hour 7-8am he hosts with Erin and its the best news available at that hour. Gayle doesn't really show up until 8am and a little of her goes along way with me. This week was irritating with both Oprah and Stedman as guests different days.

  30. Never. Watch. Morning.tv. Cannot. Stand. It.

  31. I don't like Ann either. I was a GMA watcher until George appeared (detest him) and I decided Ann was the better of two evils. I have tried CBS and while I love Gail, I don't like Charlie (so droll). Somebody bring back Chris Cuomo!

  32. isn't it well known matt is a closet case?

    ReplyDelete
  33. I can't stand Savannah Guthrie!!!

I think Courtney Reagan is drunk all the time. She slurs all the time!

    I like Matt and Natalie.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Well if Ann goes I hope to heck she takes Al with her. He has never gotten over not getting Katie's chair.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Can't stand Ann Curry! She was fine as a news reader, but sucks with Matt. I've been watching Matt's true love Katie on GMA, and she is a natural for that slot. Some people can just do that stuff well.

I thought Natalie was gone due to rumors of having an affair with Matt.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Robert - thank you for the Captain Kangaroo mention! He, Mr. Green Jeans and that dancing clown made me happy and kept me entertained back in the day. No morning news show comes close to that. Now I need to google Captain Kangaroo and relive childhood.

    ReplyDelete
  37. So sure that Natalie is never bumped to Ann's spot because of the affair rumors. Matt is well known as a total dog. I used to love him, but he seems so smarmy nowadays, I can't stand him.

Took a while to warm up to Meredith, but I liked her. Brash, tough...not so meek like Ann. Agree Ann should go back to the news desk or investigative journalism.

Give Hoda the job. Fourth hour show is a train wreck. More Stone on Dateline, please. So. Cute.

  38. I love hoda & kathie lee, but agree hoda could do [much] better. Ann, LMAO — an old-fashioned drunk; they probably hide the booze from her now but I still wait for the slur or stumble. Live train wreck TV. I so gladly turned the morning background noise to ABC last week. I didn't like KC much when she was on, but compared to the current crop she was a breath of fresh air.
