Mega Millions Winner Keeping Money For Herself - Not Sharing With Group

A woman says that although she and her co-workers at a McDonald's restaurant pooled their money to buy Mega Millions tickets, the ticket which actually turned out to be a winner was not from the pooled money but was from money she used separately from the group and plans on keeping the estimated $105M all to herself. See, this is where it gets tricky when you buy lottery tickets with your co-workers or friends. The woman, who has 7 children says she has hidden the ticket but will present it to lottery officials today. She says that she bought at least three tickets that were separate from the ones she bought with her co-workers. There are supposedly 15 people in the pool which means that if the $105M was divided among everyone then each person would get about $7M. That is a ton of money for anyone, let alone someone making $7.50 an hour. Do you believe the woman? Did she buy tickets separately? There will probably be a big lawsuit over the money and she won't be able to touch it for awhile.

  2. Yea some guy just got sued for the same thing recently... he had to give everyone in the pool their fair share.

If she REALLY wanted to make money she would capitalize off of her son's death... oh wait that's Trayvon Martin's parents... they are so sad he's gone they are cashing in on it... wonderful parents I say.

She can't prove that she bought it solely with her money. Her co-workers can't prove she use their money to buy the ticket. It's all hearsay. However, the co-workers may be able to use a good faith defense. I'm not sure how that would work.

Her story is sketchy at best. If she could afford to buy her own tickets, why be part of a lottery pool?

She's going to get sued out the yin-yang. She would have been better off just splitting the money. By the time the lawsuits are done, there may not be much left to enjoy.

  4. this is going to come back and bite her on the butt.

now, i'm not up on lottery algorithms and sequences...but might there not be a way to research and confirm that the particular winning ticket, and her other personal two, may have indeed been bought--or not--separately from the group batch? surely it can be identified by some sort of number sequence/time stamp/somethin', no?

  8. Interesting that it's always the people holding the tickets for the office/work pools in these situations that end up winning. Coincidence? Probably not

I just don't get it. How hard is it for these people to make copies of the bloody tickets and hand out sheets so there is no question of who bought what when.

If this woman is trying to cheat her fellow workers out of seven million each she is the worst kind of person and hopefully karma will bite her firmly in the ass.

When there was a big draw we all usually bought our own as well. I think that's pretty common, people will often buy more tickets than usual when a big draw comes up, and I don't think it's a big deal, as long as you have a good system for identifying which tickets are which.

    ReplyDelete
  22. What you are supposed to do to cover your ass is make copies of all the lottery tickets that were purchased from the pool money, and distribute them. Then, if you want to buy extra tickets for yourself, you can purchase them at a separate time or day.

  33. Wow. So much wrong with this today. I'll start with the actual topic of this post before dive bombing into my own political agenda like some assholes, I mean anonymous posters.

As for this story it's pretty much BS. I work in Maryland and that's the talk of the day around here. First, assuming she did in fact when she will definitely be sued and it will be hard to prove she bought this seperately. However, in her defense the story is that the store manager gave her $5 to buy more tickets for the pool on Friday night. The winning ticket was sold singularly and was a quick pick, NOT as part of a group of 5.The Maryland Lottery KNOWS THIS FOR CERTAIN. Doesn't make sense to spend $5 to buy 5 $1 tickets individually when you could just buy 5 tickets all at once.

Also they've already looked at the footage and it was assumed that an older black man seemed to be the purchaser of the winning ticket. They know what store it was bought at and what time so they checked the security tapes. That's all assumption though and could be wrong.

Finally when asked if she had the ticket the lady said SHE LOST IT! Also, that some of the numbers LOOKED familiar. This lady has no idea if she won for sure.

Ok, one last thing. The first people she told about winning was her Co-workers! Maryland you can claim anonymously. She had no reason to tell anyone. She's an idiot no matter if she won or not but I'm betting she is completely mistaken about the numbers and didn't win anything. At the least she won't have that money for long.

As for Anon 853, I'm curious by what "Facts of the case" you are referring?
Do you mean the fact that the man with the gun was told by the 911 dispatcher to NOT FOLLOW Trayvon Martin?
or perhaps the fact that video evidence shows no sign that Zimmerman was assaulted by Trayvon Martin?
Or even the fact that while his parents have trademarked his name they have not made ANY money off of his name?
Possibly the fact that multiple voice analyst experts have concluded that the shouts for help on the 911 recording are not Zimmerman's?
Are you possibly referring to the Florida law allowing for one to not be charged with a death in defense of their own home, which Zimmerman is claiming is the reason for his innocence? Despite the fact that even the lawmaker who created the bill meant for it to be used in the event of a home invasion and NOT in the case of an armed man with a history of beating his girlfriends and fighting with police stalking a teenage boy through a neighborhood where the teenagers relatives lived?

I'm just curious about your facts is all?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 911 dispatchers have no authority to tell anyone to do anything. Including "don't follow".
      - following someone is not a crime, its not even lawfully considered an aggressive act.
      - stand your ground law is ANYWHERE in the state, not just in ones home. (Upheld in Florida courts, Google "Jorge saavedra")
-EMTa were on scene and treated Zimmerman before he was escorted to the police station
      - eye witnesses put trayvon on top of Zimmerman beating him
      - trayvon was found face down with 1 wound to chest, implicating him on top of Zimmerman.
      - Zimmerman's back was wet with grass stains on back of clothing, putting him on bottom
      - shell casing was still lodged in the gun, meaning that soemone was holding the slide of the firearm, meaning there was a struggle for it.

    2. Just to correct your inaccurate information, 911 dispatches do have the right to ask you not to follow someone so you are not in harms way. It's for your safety. If they dont heed your advice well that's their own problem. Colorado has the make my day law and whe people would call up and ask us what they were allowed to do, we would say you have a right to protect yourself, family and property. We could NoT give specific answers.

  36. After watching numerous news shows about the big win this past weekend, I heard about one group that has bylaws. I think they've won a couple of times now and everything is legit. Those in the group are not to purchase tickets outside of the group so there's no conflict like we have here.

It's easy to paint this woman as a greedy bitch, but she may have very well purchased tickets outside of her group. But, how hard would it be to divide the winnings with co-workers? The curse of the lottery is going to hit her hard if she doesn't.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Some miscellaneous advice on lotto winnings.

    (1) Never do lotto groups. It's like that scene in The Hunger Games, where the (I think they're called) tributes are standing in front of all of the supplies, and half of them are slaughtered five minutes later. You think 12 or 8 people will agree on the same principles when a pile of money is dumped between them? No - prison rules will go into effect, and it's happened at least twice in the past several years.

    (2) Buy the lotto ticket using a debit card if possible, make sure you get a receipt, and save the receipt. The receipt will be the winner's insurance for the ticket. It will ward off any jackholes who attempt to claim they paid you to buy them a ticket, pooled funds, et cetera. The burden will then be on the opportunist who will try to get their share.

    (3) Buy the ticket as soon as possible from the previous drawing. As in 8 a.m. on Wednesday after a Tuesday night drawing. Combined with (2), it will refute any stories of collective participation.

This woman committed the simple error of trying to cash in when everyone else was watching. Thankfully she didn't; I like the idea of a group of McDonald's ee's winning a portion of the lotto. I imagine this will get sorted out fairly.

  38. In Ohio a group of workers at the Kraft Made cabinet factory hit a big jackpot. They had an ongoing pool. One employee was on a leave for a few months and didn't contribute. He sued, saying that the pool would cover other workers on leave and didn't with him. The winners said that the other employees asked to continue to be a part of it and he didn't. Can't remember if they settled or if there was an official ruling, but in the end the guy who was on leave got his share and he didn't even contribute. Good luck Mrs Ronald McDonald! You'll need it.

    ReplyDelete
  62. @Patty (9:36 am) - I was actually just reading an article last week on cases like these, and often it is a situation where one employee got left out and sues. Most of the time that individual employee ends up losing - despite it obviously being unfair, the law only runs off verifiable evidence, and often these individuals cannot prove that they should have been included.

I remember the Kraft Maid case being an exception though for three reasons. First of all, he was on sick leave for three months with a back injury. So he had no way of going to the office to contribute his share himself. Second, the co-workers claimed they invited him to keep participating, but he pointed out that the only way they had contacted him was by sending a message to his WORK e-mail - which he was unable to access from home. And apparently, no one bothered to call the poor guy (I'm sure his sick leave was paid and he wouldn't have minded them deducting $1 from that just to put in the pool). Third, as you mentioned, the office had a history of covering for other employees who had been absent from work before. He himself had chipped in a dollar of his own money to cover for others. So naturally, he expected the same to be done for him.

The dumbest part of it all? A few people did the division and had those employees included him in the first place, they would have gone from getting approximately 4.5 million each to...4.3 million each. They were squabbling over a mere 200,000 dollars! Proof of how blind greed really is.

Hope the workers learned a lesson too. Even if no one can get away to make copies, they should've written down all the ball numbers, ticket numbers, and then signed each copy.
