Sarah Hyland Gets A Kidney Transplant

I don't know what my weekly world of television will be someday when Modern Family goes off the air. But for now it is there and part of that week includes Sarah Hyland who plays Haley. I love her on the show and in this month's issue of Seventeen she talks about the kidney transplant she got from her dad last month. "I have a second chance at life, not a lot of people get that." Very true. George Lopez did and then promptly cheated on his wife with hookers which was awful because he was married and more awful because she gave him the kidney. Sarah is not like that though. She has never dated hookers. She is working with George's foundation though. Sarah was born with kidney dysplasia which is where a baby's kidney's don't develop well in the womb.

Besides having a dad who would give her a kidney, her boyfriend, Matt Prokop makes sure she takes her meds and takes her to all her medical appointments of which there are a bunch. Good thing Matt has not worked much since HSM3. I kid. I kid. I'm happy for Sarah and I'm glad she could share her story and that she has a boyfriend who will help her with those things because many guys would not.

  1. None of my business, but is that why she is so tiny?

  3. LOL Snowstorms, before I read your 2nd comment I was trying to figure out how to pronounce that word and what it meant. hahaha

    Kidney transplants are nothing to F with. It's awesome that her dad was a match and willing to do that for her! Also nice to see that her BF is so good to her. At that age people aren't always so compassionate.

  4. I think she's great on the show. If you haven't seen it I recommend watching the video of her on fashion police making fun of Lea Michele's pose on the red carpet. It's gold.

  5. Best wishes to Sarah on this gift of life. And please everyone, remember to update your Facebook page if you wish to be an organ donor. You can give someone the greatest gift of all.

  6. Wow-she's so young. And she'll probably have to take meds the rest of her life. She better give him an exceptional Father's Day gift this year!

    Is thisenyopmed contagious? :)

  7. I just met someone who gave a kidney to her dad. I almost started crying when she told me. That's truly amazing.

    For Ontario readers, here's the link to be an organ donor: beadonor.ca. It takes a few minutes and you only need your health card.

  8. If you want to be an organ donor after death PLEASE let your family know. It isn't enough to put it on your driver's license or Facebook page or whatever. The family can override that after you die. Let your family know that this is what you want. When I worked in pediatric cardiology, I heard of a few cases where even though the potential donor was identified as such on their driver's license, the family wouldn't consent to donate the organs. A rotten shame.

  9. I work in hemodialysis and I am so happy to see infomation out there about living donors! Please, sign your organ donor card and make your wishes known to your family.
    Also, make sure that you are watching your blood pressure! Hypertension is truly the silent killer by causing damage to your sight, heart, and your kidneys!

  10. I never watch silly Disney tv movies, but for some reason, mainly boredom, I sat and watched Geek Charming with my daughter yesterday on Netflix. Sarah and her bf, Matt Prokop both starred. Their chemistry was adorable, so much so that my daughter had to google them after I told her they're dating in real life. She showed me her results. Wow. Those two are seriously mad for each other, and it's freaking adorable. I've got all my fingers and toes crossed for the two of them. They clearly make each other very happy, and it's nice to know that outside of the whole Hollywood machine, which they both clearly belong to, they try to make it work on a normal level. To Sarah, the dollface (literally, she looks like a Bratz doll!), I wish her all the best with her illness AND her love life.

  12. I loved her before this news, love her even more now. My son was born with only 1 kidney, that doesn't always work well. It's a long and hard road, and I am glad she is raising awareness.

  13. My dad is in end-stage kidney failure. Hemodialysis 3x/week that my mom and brother do at the house. I offered to be tested to see if I'm a match. He said he wouldn't accept it anyway b/c he wouldn't want me going through the surgery, which I would have anyway, of course.

    Turns out he's not a candidate for a transplant due to his other health problems. His best friend who passed away a few weeks ago received a kidney from his son on Father's Day years ago. It was in the newspapers in Miami where they lived.

    I applaud her for coming forward and I hope she stays healthy!

  14. Wonderful gift! My husband was on deck to give his mom a kidney when I was pregnant with our first child. We were in a situation where he didn't have enough sick leave to get paid while he recovered and it was super stressful thinking about how we were going to make it. Some dear, dear organ donor lost her life, and her family agreed to donate. She was a better match than my husband. I am forever grateful for that woman and her family. And my mother in law was able to enjoy her first grandchild. Organ donors are blessed angels!!!

  16. Oh Green wave! I was about to have my kidney tested for your dad and I am not saying that as a joke. So sorry to hear he can't get a transplant. I wish him well. And I love Sarah Hyland!

  17. Sherry-that's so sweet. Thank you. He's been ill about 13 years, on Dialysis for 6 or 7 years already, I think. He's only 66 now.

  19. To be completely shallow (besides being very happy for her,) I don't think she's ever looked better on the red carpet. Damn, is that ever her color.

  20. I had no idea about this either. She's so cute, it's hard to believe she's 21 (she looks 15).

    @SusanB - Good to know!

    @Green Wave Gal - :( (((Hugs)))

  22. It's sad to read this comment thread two years after the fact, considering that Sarah Hyland just broke up with Matthew Prokop because he repeatedly physically abused her over their 4+ years together, and in May he choked her so hard she had trouble speaking, and he called her a c**t, and she got a restraining order against him this week on the advice of his rehab counselor, who called her because he was so concerned. Matthew has been stalking her and even threatened her dog.

    She says that she called his mother in Texas to come and help her get help for Matthew, and initially Matthew's mother was going to come, but then she backed out and told Sarah that if Matthew killed himself it would be Sarah's fault.

    This is a horrible horrible situation and from what I have read, Sarah is in real danger. Ongoing danger. Because Matthew is spinning out of control, has anger issues and is not letting go.

    In fact, Julie Bowen, who plays her mom on Modern Family, had to step in and intervene when Matthew started acting crazy.
