  2. I didn't know she wrote Silkwood. Such a fab movie. Didn't care for her mid-90s stuff, though.

    One less talent in Hollywood.

  3. I make my students read When Harry Met Sally.... It has the best dialogue in a film. Ephron was one of my biggest influences as a writer.

  5. I loved When Harry Met Sally. I loved the Julia portion of Julie and Julia (Julie was ridiculous). She was a great writer.

  6. Didn't she also do "Dot"? One of worst movies ever.

Other than that though, I loved her. Especially Harry Met Sally. Except that you don't drive south on Lakeshore Drive to go from the University of Chicago east. The Chicago movie audience I was wish all shouted "no way!" when that appeared on the screen. ;-P

But that was the director, I'm sure, not the writer.

    Too young, far too young.

  7. I remember an interview with Rob Reiner where he said that doing WHEN HARRY MET SALLY... with her was so much fun. He said that they wrote a lot of him and his personality into Harry and a lot of Nora into Sally.

I tried to read HEARTBURN as a teenager but I didn't really get it at the time. Didn't see the movie, either. All I remember is that she stuck actual recipes in the book (the female protagonist was a chef, IIRC). Perhaps now that I am older and wiser, I shall read it and absorb some of her wit.

  10. Nora Ephron had a quote that is too beautiful not to share....

"You should eat delicious things while you can still eat them, go to wonderful places while you still can ... and not have evenings where you say to yourself, 'What am I doing here? Why am I here? I am bored witless!'"

  12. I didn't care for Ephron as a director, but her writing was amazing. She wrote characters with great accuracy. Her best work, by far, was When Harry Met Sally....

  13. I've been a fan of her writing since "Crazy Salad" and was lucky to have had the opportunity to tell her in person how much I loved her work when I ran into her...in a ladies room. So lovely and sweet under the circumstances. RIP, Nora.

  14. When Harry Met Sally is STILL in my top 5 films. I had no idea a) that she was in her 70's or b) that she was in failing health.

RIP to a fab woman and writer.

  18. @surfer -- agree "...neck" is such a funny book. Here dialogue, even in some of the less than stellar movies, was always charming. She will be missed.

  26. I might be the only person in the world to have seen MIXED NUTS, but I love it enough to own a copy and watch it every year (along with The Ref, RIP Ted Demme). So sad at the loss of Nora Ephron.

  30. My Blue Heaven is one of those joyous movies that looks like everyone had such a good time making it (like Dirty Rotten Scoundrels). I didn't realize she wrote it, I had sort of thought Steve Martin wrote it for himself. And I need to see Silkwood again, they never replay that one.

  32. Too young. Anyone know how she died?

  33. She died of Leukemia. And she was awesome! Too bad there aren't enough women writers like her that are recognized (although I am sure they are out there) today.

  34. Awww so sad.

    RIP

  35. She was also the subject of a 1963 movie with Sandra Dee playing her. Her parents wrote "Take Her She's Mine" after they sent an 18 year old Nora Ephron to Paris for a study abroad year. I love that movie. RIP

  36. My blue heaven... Mixed Nuts... oh this is sad.

  37. So sad. So talented.

I've only read "Heartburn" but had heard her other stuff was great.

When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle and ESPECIALLY You've Got Mail...if they are on the TV. I'm watching. I don't think YGM did very well in the theaters, but I LOVED it. The ending. Makes me tear up every time.

    RIP Ms. Ephron.
