I think we probably all knew it, but Elton John told Matt Lauer yesterday that he has had a lot of unprotected sex. He blames it on all the drugs he took. Oh, and the booze. Oh, and because he was always horny. Elton says he is HIV- which is astonishing considering that he said he went unprotected through the first part of the AIDS crisis. One thing Elton has always been is open about everything in his life. I'm sure there is lots that he is not shared, but there has been plenty more that he has and that most celebrities would keep private. The interview is set to air next week.
Doesn't Matt Lauer like to have a lot of sex with women who aren't his wife?

ReplyDeleteEVERYONE around Elton John's age had unprotected sex. Male AND female. Stupid, but true. Why I didn't get a disease and/or pregnant I never will know, and I wasn't particularly promiscuous.
ReplyDeleteOf course Elton John had unsafe sex in the early 80's. Everyone did because no one knew what the hell was going on. It wasn't until the very late 80's/early 90's that not using a condom was frowned upon.

Isn't it amazing? He lived the same life as Freddie Mercury but he never was infected. I'm glad we still have EJ and wish Freddie was here too. He'd have loved the Internet and the celebrity life of today...

DeleteThe new drugs are amazing but also expensive. Elton can pay for his easily. Being HIV positive is not the death sentence it once was.
ReplyDeleteGood for him to admit he's HIV positive. I have one friend how has been HIV positive for years, never needed the drugs and his T-cell level has remained constant. But I imagine he's one in a billion.
It says in the article that he is HIV -, meaning negative.
Delete:( The boyfriend Freddy Mercury had at the time also was an ex of comedian Kenny Everett. They all died from Aids, as far as I remember. EL is very lucky.

ReplyDeleteSince Matt's exploits are fairly well known at this point, I wonder if he gets uneasy whenever the topic turns to sex. I'm sure he's very aware of body language and pissing himself not to show any sign of discomfort with the topic. I love it

DeleteI was among many, I suspect, who got tested after Magic Johnson said he was HIV +. His announcement made me pay attention to the AIDS epidemic on a personal level. I'll never forget that week. One of many signs that my hubby was a keeper - his support for me then :-).

Tru Leigh- regarding your last sentence, unfortunately there were many cases of women contracting HIV from their male partners who were engaged in down low type behavior, having unprotected sex with other men. In fact, statistically the among the highest rates of people getting HIV right now are latino and african american women who are under 40. Because being black and gay is still an issue there are a TON of black down low males who engage in unprotected sex because they dont even want to buy condoms in their neighborhoods/churches where people could see them and have it get back to family and friends. I did a report entitled Black and Gay in a human sexulities class last year. It was heartbreaking all around- for the women who dont know and for the men who expose themselves to deadly diseases because they cant face coming out in their culture.

Which is why in 2009, MSM accounted for 61% of new HIV infections in the US and 79% of infections among all newly infected men. Compared with other groups, MSM accounted for the largest numbers of new HIV infections in 2009.
And the great part is that if you qualify (underinsured and uninsured individuals living with HIV/AIDS), the taxpayers get to foot the bill for your HIV meds.
I don't mind my tax dollars going to provide quality affordable health care and medicines to anyone. I'm happy IF that's where my tax dollars really went, instead of... WAR...bailouts...Israel... Healthcare just seems like a really important investment. Yes, that is great!
