Savannah Guthrie's Debut On Today? - Awful

For the first time in six years, Good Morning America won a Monday morning. This was despite the wave of publicity that Today got with the hiring of Savannah Guthrie and the firing of Ann Curry. So, that means the entire time Ann was a co-host, Today never lost a Monday, but as soon as they replace her they did. Do you think people in the country are finally catching on to what a skeeze Matt Lauer is and that maybe they are turning off to him? Maybe that is who the bosses need to get rid of and start fresh. You know that if you lose on your first day with all that hype then you are in for a long long road of losing. Yes, during the Olympics they will probably win, but those only last a few weeks.

  1. Not surprised. Not a GMA fan either (I prefer local morning news, which sticks to the news and leaves out all the celebrity agenda-pushing), but Matt Lauer is a sleezy douche and I stopped watching Today a long time ago. NBC needs to start listening to the public before the whole network tanks completely! Does anybody watch them anymore? I am sorry they have all the Olympic coverage, I cannot STAND any of their news or sports people!!

  2. I switched to GMA when Diane Sawyer came on and yet I used to be a big fan of Matt and Katie.

I don't think it's because Matt is a skeeze, Enty, I think it's because Savannah is just that bad. Granted I've only seen her a few times, but what I saw was not good.

I think that Matt Lauer is highly overrated and has a problem keeping it in his pants. This whole debacle getting rid of Ann Curry was done so badly, that it left a very bad taste in my mouth about the Today Show.
They get the boot in my books. I will no longer tune in to the Today Show.
GMA all the way. They are likeable and seem to be above the petty politics at the Today show.

  4. Josh Elliot is also nicer on the eyes than Lauer

  5. I don't watch the morning shows, but from what I've read about the 'Today' goings on, I feel really bad for what they did to Ann Curry. And we know Lauer was behind it all. I used to like the guy, but this exposed him as being duplicitous and a bit greasy.

  6. I hate the way the handled Ann's leaving. So ugly and underhanded. Like she committed some crime. I watch CBS. They are more professional and not all that cutie pie crap. I'm sick of the dummy down news. And CBS actually does great celeb interviews without all the tabloid stuff. I kind of feel for Savannah because the pressure is on her. It should be on MATT who is a douche and the reason people are turning off. He really showed his slimy side with Ann and the network too.

    YOU get what you GIVE>

  7. Agreed Matt is overrated ....he's been cheating on his wife for years....time for him to go.

  8. I don't watch these shows, but watch the NBC channel for my local news in the a.m. Natalie Morales does the Today Show plug every morning, and have to say that you can almost feel the animosity toward Savannah permeate through the TV can't say I blame her. Sometimes the casting couch doesn't work.

The treatment of Ann Curry was distasteful, and to top it off the douche of a honcho had to make some asinine comment about her cooking segments, like it should have some weight on how a women in an anchor spot should hold.

The movie toward the perky with any anchor spot has left a bad taste in my mouth, I tend to look elsewhere for my news.

  9. Perhaps if they broadcast some ACTUAL news, or asked a tough interview question, they might be doing better.

  10. Only see the Today Show at a friend's place, she leaves the TV on, so I don't care who's hosting. But the way they fired Ann was awful. I've seen the videos of her stuttering and stammering, I read how people make fun of her, but jeeezus, nobody should be treated like that.

  11. I really would have thought that after the whole Leno/Conan debacle, NBC would have learned that they need to do better research into what people want and if they do need to make a change, they need to be more sensitive and compassionate about it. It's their lack of sensitivity that gets to me and I'm sure that's the case for many of their viewers that switched to GMA.

  12. I've always thought morning news show success hinged more on the female half. Katie Couric had the morning show 'it' factor, and the Today show remained #1 despite Bryant Gumbel leaving. Meredith Vieira had it too. Ann and Savannah lack the relatability that Diane Sawyer has, with Matt as the leading partner falling kind of flat.

  13. Don't give a fuck either way. I listen to Morning Edition on NPR in the mornings. Because I'm a snob like that.

  14. I was a loyal Today Show fan for years but in the past year or so, I found myself gravitating more and more often to GMA because the chemistry of the team was just so much better. I LOVED Ann and thought that the way that NBC let her go was just awful and set women in the workplace back 50 years. Who says that Matt is so skilled that HE gets to dictate who co-hosts with him? IMHO NBC totally leaked bad press about Ann and then sent her off after 15 years without even a decent goodbye.
That pushed me over the edge and I won't be going back to the Today Show despite all their hype and snappy promos with Savannah. Maybe it's time for Matt to go?

  15. I agree with punkin - CBS in the morning is great. Charlie Rose is a serious interviewer not given to fluff. Erika Hill is fun (especially when Jeff Glor is subbing for Charlie) and I am surprised at how good Gayle King is. Getting Colin Powell to sing "Call Me Maybe" during a commercial break? Brilliant.

  16. Co sign with the CBS love. I really like that show. It's less about their personalities and more about the content. It's just easy to watch. Although I would like to do an intervention on Gayle with her necklace selection. Yikes.

  19. I was raised on the Today Show, and have been loyal as an adult...but when Meredith left, she took the charisma and character a morning show needs with her. Add to that the multiple Kardashian and Octomom interviews, and I just can't take them seriously anymore.

I personally like Savannah, but not in this capacity. Same with Ann. She was a great investigative journalist, but not cut out for morning TV.

I've never watched GMA, but I may have to start.

  20. Hey NBC, I was a loyal Today Show fan until a week ago AND I'm your ideal demographic Female, 35-44 range, with children, and Head of Household. Your treatment of Ann Curry (whom I loved during her news desk days more so than co-hosting, but still liked her) was the last straw. Sayanora!

I switched to ABC, but might have to try CBS now.

[PS, my screen name was made a loooong time ago, for those who wonder ;)]

  21. I never understood what really happened with Ann or why she had to go. It was handled so poorly

  22. @Linnea, because ratings plummeted when she took over from Meredith. That doesn't excuse how shabbily she was treated though.

  23. I've always watched Today, but can't after how they treated Ann. She did a great job considering the rumors that plagued her for months. Heck, her promotion was so new that I still remembered her speech from her first day & how happy she was, which just made it worse. I used to love Matt but can't watch him anymore. Unfortunately I feel they will sacrifice Savannah before Matt because of money, but I'm glad to see they will suffer - Matt & NBC - for their poor decisions & lack of human compassion, which is needed for a morning show. They deserve low ratings; and my TV is now set to GMA in the morning.

  27. Did anyone see Howie Mandel on AGT say. "If I can bring anyone back it would be Ann Curry."
    It was great

  28. I've cancelled the Today Show podcast. Done

  29. You can totally tell Matt is thinking in that picture "how long till I fuck Savannah?"...Matt is a skeeve I quit Ann's last day. They royally screwed her. Little insider info for you. The line Ann used "I could not get the ball to the finish line, but man I tried" was a dig at Matt. It was Matt who said to execs "she can't get the ball to the finish line" and someone told Ann so she used it in her 'goodbye' speech.

  30. I 100% agree with Brooke. I was just telling my Mom & sis how I always dread watching them during the Olympics. Now to make matters worse, they've added Seacrest to the mix. I'll continue to avoid Today like the plague.

  31. I go back and forth between CNN, Fox & MSNBC. I like Morning Joe on MSNBC - it keeps stuff on serious topics and I get to watch Mika try to look intelligent.

  32. Thanks for the the tidbit Unknown and I agree. I saw the Today Show briefly this morning and Matt looked like he wanted to jump Savannah's bones. He is such a pig and I hope his dick falls off. I question why his long-suffering wife stays with him.

  33. I wonder what it would take to get them to fire Matt?

  34. Dont watch any morning news, but the way they treated ann curry??!!! Classless! Lauer is a douche. I hope the f*cking show tanks titanically!!! Time for new blood!

  35. I've given up and switched to CBS.

I thought GMA was cringier, and I am not a big Robin Roberts fan.

I like Charlie Rose, and the CBS show is far more news oriented. I can always switch back to Today for the third hour fluff.

  36. I agree with cornbread!

Whoever is hiring Matt's cohosts needs to be fired. Ann and Savannah were both terrible choices. They should've gone with Hoda Kotb or someone from the outside.

  37. I am SHOCKED to learn that people still watch TV.

  38. I normally frown at the way on-air women are expected to prettify themselves but come on lady, LIP FILLER!

  39. There are hundreds of people that do morning news shows across the country and most are really good, its just not as hard as they would have you believe. They need a 5 year turnover because these folks and format are just stale.

    ReplyDelete
  40. @Unknown - That really is an interesting tidbit. Thanks for sharing.

Unfortunately, my local NBC station is light years ahead of the other major players and I'm too lazy to change back and forth, so I will continue to watch. I would love to see the dream pairing of Lester Holt and Hoda Kotb.

  41. I guess Guthrie is next on the chopping block because Lauer is getting paid.

    I like CBS now.

  43. I was a loyal viewer (watched it while drinking my coffee before work each day). I'm disgusted by the way they got rid of Ann and blamed her for their shortcomings. Their dumb segments, Jenna Bush, Kartrashians, Octomom... do I need to go on? That was what brought on their low ratings. But no, let's blame the woman... it's always her fault! I, for one, am glad their ratings keep sinking. And who the hell made Matt king?
Thanks for that tidbit @unknown. I loved how Ann didn't hide her hatred for King Douche her last day.

  44. I don't know the show but he looks real smug and smarmy to me.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Savannah is gross to look at: bleeding lipstick, thinning hair. Mostly just that she was vying for Ann's job and didn't mind the way Ann got canned. The ugliness shows through.

But Lauer's the problem. They've got to find a guy who's not so stuck on himself.

  46. Savannah was annoying. The whole mess with her playing guitar and singing was annoying. I miss Ann. She was very nice. I got to meet her outside on the Today show a few years back. It was the week of the 4th and she was filling in for Meredith. She was just so elegant and sweet with everyone. So was Natalie Morales.

  48. Just read Lauer's wikipedia page, and the loser doesn't even have a real bachelor's degree! He dropped out, then received what amounts to an honorary degree at the age of 39 for his "independent study" work experience credits.

  49. In all do respect for everyone's opinion I met her at the Michael Jackson trial, and she approached me and introduced herself. She was a doll. Give her a chance. ;)

  50. Watched Today religiously all through HS & Uni, loved it (the birthdays with Wilfrid, Jane Pauley Deborah Norville-remember that?) and I love Ann Curry. The content has become so bad I stopped watching and now I watch KTLA because it's got loads of film news and I find it fascinating in general, but I miss the way Today was the awesome year in review videos, the Christmas Day show with all the hosts sitting talking (Lester in a sweater is a great memory) it used to be a mix of things but now it's just rubbish.

  51. All Matt Lauer wants to do is skeet-skeet! Ann Curry wouldn't play so Matt got Steve Capus to fire Ann and hire bland as oatmeal Savannah who would trick around with him. I think Lester Holt would be the perfect replacement for that Rat Mat Lower. NBC should NOT have allowed Ann to be disrespected in such a severe and public manner. What Those MEN did to Ann Curry is what has to be every woman over 50's nightmare; to be put out for a younger woman who's after what she's got!
