Amy Poehler & Will Arnett Call It Quits

For the past year the rumors have been bubbling and yesterday, Will Arnett and Amy Poehler called an end to their nine years of marriage. The couple say everything is amicable which is another way of saying that this was a long time coming and except for the rumblings kept everything pretty quiet and managed to settle what needed to be settled. Judging by the Twitterverse yesterday when the news broke, it is a pretty shocking thing for people to see. There are those couples you expect to stay around together or like together and when they break you wonder how anyone manages to stay together or if everyone is destined to split.

  1. They both seem like such likeable people - I hope it really is an amicable split for them and their kids sakes....

  2. I cannot bring myself to make an Arrested Development joke...

  3. I can't either, Magness. This makes me sad. :(

  4. It burns. IT BURNS. I've been so sad since last night! They're my favorites. And I didn't want to believe Lainey's blind. I'm sad. Sad, sad, sad. I don't know these people and yet I'm sad. Even the Short One is bummed about this! We're huge fans of all things Will & Amy, going back to UCB.

Does this mean that the blind is true about Will & Christina Applegate? I think I argued and argued in the comments for that one. Didn't want to believe it.

  5. it's not a surprise they didn't flaunt together since some times
sad for the kids and i hope a friendly post-break-up for them and the kids

  6. Never heard about Will and Christina Applegate. What a weird couple.

I'm tired of people saying they never saw this coming. Pohler never seemed to be too into the guy. She had made subtle statements about his habits that showed she was annoyed. I think they just got tired of each other.

I was also shocked to find out Arnett was married to Penelope Ann Miller before Pohler.

  7. This is really really sad. I also can't bring myself to make an AD joke either. Atleast the Lainey blind prepared us for this, but its still sad.

  8. It's like Brad and Jen all over again.

    ReplyDelete
  9. @Henriette: I didn't know about Penelope, either, until last night.

  10. I feel like my favorite fun aunt and uncle have announced they're splitting up. And I'll make the bad AD joke: I wish that this was all just an illuuusion.

Maybe someone can help me out - I searched and searched the Blind Items archives last night for a good hour to find the blind that we guessed was Will Arnett & Christina Applegate to show my sister. I couldn't find it, even though I remember most of the wording & thought it was called "The Co-Stars" or something back during that hot minute when Enty was into naming all his blinds again. Anyone have any luck finding it? Thanks. Happy Friday!

  11. If that blind was true, I hope Christina Applegate is prepared to be the most hated woman on the internet.
And that poor ginger child (and the other one)! Team Amy. I don't even know if I'll be able to enjoy the new Arrested Development now.

  12. I think the only acceptable AD joke is Will/Gob saying "I've made a huuuuuge mistake". :/

  13. Wasn't this a recent blind item subject?

Lainey had this the other day in a blind.

That is the only reason I am not surprised.
Someone please find the CA/WA blind!

Also did not know he was married to PAM.
Maybe he isn't good at marriage.
The addition of kids to the relationship completely changes the dynamic. Many times it leads to the demise. Perhaps this was the case.

  15. Here is Lainey's:

Nothing to laugh about here -- this one we will all be sad about. All of us. Because it’s almost over for them. After rising together and stabilising together and conveniently finding a home together, where you’d think work would be so much easier, and having the babies too, they’re close to formally ending it, and there may be an announcement soon...which, well, if you look at him it doesn’t seem to have affected him physically. Everyone says he really cares about his appearance these days, more than ever, and is looking hotter than ever. Or, as one person put it, “hot all of a sudden”. Emotionally too he hasn’t let on that there’s anything wrong. For what it’s worth, I’m told there was no third party involvement. Perhaps that means it’s amicable, just the end of their story. Perhaps we’ll be more choked about it than they are. As I drench my waffles in more maple syrup.

  17. Sorry I should've put in my last message that I can't find Enty's blind either from a few months ago about two co-stars getting it on where Christina & he were popular guesses. Lainey's blind seems to indicate there wasn't a third party. I guess time will tell.

You pulled it off, lady. Kudos on avoiding anything regarding the Seaward

I've got the tears of a clown this morning

  19. can someone post the blind? i definitely missed it. no offense, but...will arnett and christina applegate...really? well anyway, its always sucks to see a couple break up after a long time, but hopefully things won't get too messy since they have kids involved.

  21. @ EmEyeKay "I think the only acceptable AD joke is Will/Gob saying "I've made a huuuuuge mistake". :/"

    Yes, this.

Funny how I am already on Amy's side even though I know nothing about this!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Why would Cristina A be a surprise? WA seems to have a type--they're all blonde funny actresses. Some more natural blonde than others, but aren't we all?

He IS hot 'all the sudden'.

  23. *Christina Applegate*

  24. You too Em.
    Why???????

I just found out some friends of mine are splitting, and they are the couple (with kids) that seemed in love, passionate, hilarious, and adventurous. I'm giving love a WTF this week :(

  25. Ahh, this makes me sad :(
And I do remember reading that Lainey blind, and wondering who it could be.

Aww.... one of the few Hollywood couples who really seemed to "fit" together. I really got the impression that they were a good couple. Just goes to show you. I always say it, You never know what goes on behind closed doors. Sad.

  28. I loved them together.

Don't be scared; I am sorry. It is something I read while I was pregnant several places, but it is not the norm. I read a great book that covers the topic called "Baby Brain Rules,...a great read for expectant parents too.

    ReplyDelete
  36. So, now we wait to hear about Christina's marriage ending?

    ReplyDelete
  37. @Lizjaxe

Thank you finding that blind. I was just re-reading the comments, and found this hilarious comment by Karmen

    Karmen said:

And judging by how shocked and crushed Enty is, I definitely think this is Arnett & Applegate. I'm pretty crushed too. I'm going key the next Segway I see.

  38. Thank you @ goes in circles. I will give it a read. I know it's going to be an adjustment but all the sudden it sounded like the beginning of the end! Scary. Plus I got no sleep last night so I might be a little sensitive. I was exhausted but awake from 2-6. Training perhaps?

    1. My advice is don't forget your husband during all the craziness that's motherhood. Really try to go on date nights often and keep it new and exciting! Don't go to the same place and do the same thing when you have date night, change it up! I know it will be hard and it's always a struggle to do this but it's worth it, not only does it make you a better wife but a happier mom too. Good luck !

  39. Glad I found it.

Wasn't there talk that Amy was sleeping with Paul Rudd recently?

    ReplyDelete
  40. @Nellie, the best advice I can give a "poor pregnant lady" (haha)is don't become "Mommy" to the exclusion of "Wife." I've seen this so many times where women lose interest in their husbands and marriage as soon as they have children, don't want to have sex or make time for him, etc. Then wonder why the husband looks for someone else.

I doubt that's what happened here tho...and this one does make me sad.

    ReplyDelete
  41. @Nellie - congrats on the bambino! Don't be scared, but know that having a baby takes things to a whole new level. Your time is no longer your own - you work for a tiny, screaming boss person who has no respect at all for 9 to 5!

It wll be the best thing you and your SO have ever done, but always remember that you're on the same team. People start fighting because they're tired and stressed out, and look for fault in their partner as a way to assign blame.

Remember : you BOTH work for the Baby Boss, and together you will be able to handle it!! Hugs to you, Momma :-).

P.S. - I am a big Dr. Sears fan (I know lots of people aren't, but I am). His books are a great resource, if you lean a little towards the crunchy, attachment parenting side.

  45. I'm not a Lainey fan but I saw the blind and refused to believe it was them, so I am still in shock from seeing the news last night. Probably should have known, as they often worked together but then they just seemed to be doing their own thing over the last year. I love these two celebs a lot, so I'm hoping things can really be civil between them moving forward.

Ugh. Not even an AD or Ron Swanson quote can make the world brighter today.

  46. Here is the CDAN blind that where WA/CA were the common guess:

This one was a shocker to even my jaded self. Two co-stars. Network show. Both married. Both B+ listers with very long careers. Lots of bad luck with shows in the past although each has struck gold at one point. I cannot even fathom the two of them together, but they are. Like all over each other on a daily basis. When the crew started noticing what was going on, I think they were all just as crushed as I am. To great families being torn apart by a couple of people who wanted some sex with each other.

  49. @Grey - well to be fair she hadn't worn her ring since she was pregnant with her first baby. I think her hands got bigger during the pregnancy and she probably never bothered to get it sized up?

I thought I would feel better after going to bed on this news but I don't. They were my absolute favorite celebrity couple and I am still utterly devastated. I really truly hope the split WAS "amicable" because my heart couldn't handle anything else.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Thanks for finding/posting the blind. Apparently I didn't argue as much as I thought (though I was arguing in my head and refusing to believe it). ARGH! Christina! WTF?!

@Nellie - when The Short One was born, I paid a lot of attention to him, as, you know, one would do WITH A NEWBORN. His father was not happy about the lack of attention. He was very unhelpful and resentful. I couldn't deal with that, and it went downhill from there. Would we still be together if we hadn't spawned? Maybe. It definitely would have lasted longer.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Okay, I'm going to say it...I don't care for him. I loved Amy on SNL, but Will has never done it for me. He's the same smug asshole character all the time. I hate it that they had two kids, but IMO they never really went together for me. There was never any chemistry.

I've always liked Christina Applegate, but what in the hell was she smoking this week on SYTYCD? She was whacked. Maybe she was nervous knowing this announcement was coming?

Things that make you go hmmmmm....

    ReplyDelete
  52. Awwww, this stinks. Happiness to both.

    ReplyDelete
  53. @Nellie-- Congrats! I wa terrified of the same thing when we had our first. Everything I read said "just make it through the first year together...", we did and now we are expecting again haha! It's really about communication, teamwork, mutual respect and caring for one another. Yes, you'll be exhausted but you still have your duties to your SO. They need love and attention too. If you're not getting it, speak up and tell him what you need. Ask him to do the same. It makes a world of difference. Do not stop communicating with one another. Best of luck to you!

I'm a Dr. Sears and Brain Rules fan also. Wonderful material!

  54. Wasn't there another blind item about them? From this past spring?

On a personal note, I went to UCB's Asssscat in 2005 and Will Arnett sat next to me. Amy Poehler was on stage, doing improv, and Will was losing his shit the entire time. It's kinda sad when people grow apart. They are both hilarious.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I hate to hear this. And on a Friday. Boo.

    ReplyDelete
  61. @Dia Nope! Ive never watched Arrested Development either! But I do think we are the only two who haven't!

  62. God this is depressing. Looking back at the old blind from last November in the comments, I was pretty desperate to make it about someone else. Deep down, I feared what we all know today to be true. Damnittohell.

I wonder if this will affect the ratings of Up All Night?

    ReplyDelete
  63. @dia @stephanie you guys are missing out! AD is the BEST. Don't understand why it was canceled. I watch it over and over again, they never get old. I'm so excited for the new episodes!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Thanks everybody! I am going to check out the suggested books too :)

    ReplyDelete
  65. @Nellie/Sunny
I highly recommend the "And Baby Makes Three" book too. We LOVED it! It definitely helped us figure out what to expect and how to deal with any issues that come up.

My other advice (following along Dr. Sears) would be to get your DH as involved as possible. My DH wears our LO in the Ergo carrier and is super involved in everyday stuff with him. I think that's definitely helped me remember I'm a wife as well as mommy and helped him bond with our LO. Our LO has only made our marriage stronger because we work more as a team now.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Oops, forgot to add that this was super depressing to hear for me (though through Enty's blinds I kinda suspected it was coming). I really liked them together :-(

    ReplyDelete
  67. Let's look at the bright side. Now the internets can start setting Amy up on blind dates!
I think Amy should go on a date with Mark Ruffalo.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Oh, wait. He's married. Nevermind.

    ReplyDelete
  69. This is what I got to say about kids and marriage: if your marriage was good before the kids-you will be ok, if you had problems-it could get worse.

Children bring up the communication issues and everything else magnified. A lot of people have rocky marriages or marriages that are livable, but not great and kids make it worse.

I also know a lot of women who just got married to have babies, which also doesn't help a marriage.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Sadly, I predicted this almost exactly a year ago. They were maintaining two separate households even though they were both shooting shows in L.A.

I still think that this is the answer to the BI about the hubby who is fooling around with guys on the down low, but I don't remember which one that was.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Damn .. Damn .. Damn. This is just a massive bummer all the way around. Poor Amy .. Poor Will .. and poor babies. I have now managed to totally lose faith in love ..faith in having a lasting, loving marriage died a few hundred years ago but love was on the ropes, til now. This knocked it out totally. Damn.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Literally fought back tears when I first read of this split. They were my fav couple and two of my favourite comedic actors. And I don't have much else going on at the moment.

    I blame Franklin the puppet.

    ReplyDelete
  73. @Nellie-hubby and i have 2 darling little ladies and our relationship is stronger than ever. I think both parents have to be on board with the huge lifestyle change, and aware of the changes that a baby brings. As long as that's true, i'm sure it'll be fine!!
    Good luck!!!

  74. ps: in my book, Christina Applegate is a pirate hooker.
Will Arnett has always seemed kind of douchey to me.

  76. LOVE Franklin!!!!!!

  77. Anonymous4:36 PM

This makes me so sad. I have really grown to respect Amy, besides just liking her--she's such a classy lady. In a world of attention whores, backstabbing bitchiness, and desperation, she stands out to me as a woman who has quite the head on her shoulders. I don't know much about her husband but I had thought they were really happy together. I only hope this ends up being the best for her in the long run.

Also, I've never been an Arrested Development fan. My old roommate loved it, so I've seen a few episodes, but I never thought it was funny. I do feel like I'm the only one in the world who thinks that, though. =)

    ReplyDelete
  78. @ califblondy - I totally agree with your first paragraph.

@ dia papaya - I've never seen it either (surprising because I adore Jason Bateman) but it's on my list.

    ReplyDelete
  79. If you haven't watched AD yet....WATCH IT!! Am so excited that now I watch it all over again with my kids! My 11 year old loooves Tobias and Gob, and of course the Michael Cera scenes always enthrall him.

Anyway, about all this forever-love stuff, that blew out the window when my hubby of 18 years flew the coop 3 years ago. But, you know, it's amazing how sometimes what you think are the worst situations just turn into something better than ever! I guess just enjoy wherever you're at: having babies, single, married, whatever, because nothing lasts so you just have to keep moving forward!

Wow. I must have eaten too many of my own chocolate cupcakes (with mint icing), or something! :) Cheers to a Friday night with CDAN!

  80. Bummer. I am a very love-cynical romantic...c'est la vie.

Also - Congrats, preggos! I love Dr. Sears, too! Totally don't get the disdain for his work.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Wait. Who's talkin smack on Dr. Sears?!? Of all the books and Web sites I scoured while prego and post-prego (I just referred to Dr. Sears today because I have a feverish 21-month-old on my hands. Eek!)Dr. Sears makes the most sense and he makes me feel like I'm not a dumbass because let's be real: When you're a first-time mommy it's as if the whole world is tsk-tsking and judging you. If I personally knew Dr. Sears, I would give him crazy hugs and cook for him and shower him with kisses. I love this man.

I never worried that the baby would pull me and The Hubs apart, and he hasn't. We are a tight unit. Don't get me wrong, he totally gets on my last nerve at times, but he is the bestest husband and daddy in the whole entire world. Good luck to you, Nellie!! And girl, stop worrying about that shit!! You're going to be fabulous.

I so do not want Christina Applegate to be the other woman in this breakup. I am definitely intrigued though. Can't wait to learn the deets.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Problem is with the blind that was posted about two "both married" people is that Christina isn't technically married. She's engaged, I think, but either way Martyn is her "partner". Maybe the blind OP just assumed married or put that because they are committed with a child.

    ReplyDelete
  83. This is pretty devastating as far as Hollywood couples go, even though we'd heard the rumors. :( I LOVE Christina Applegate and Up All Night, so I'll be a little bummed if it's true.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I thought they were a great couple, like everyone else did. It's funny, people seem to be pointing to WA as being to blame for the split; I figured that maybe AP couldn't handle Will being a regular on a (pretty) successful show after they had kids or something like that - like it was easy for them when AP worked, but now that they both do, it's over. Anyway, I've put too much thought into this. I love Will Arnett, so there's my bias!
