For the past month or two, the former star of Saved By The Bell, Lark Voorhies has been in the news after she gave a bizarre interview and then her mother said she was bi-polar. Lark has refuted this and gave an interview to Entertainment Tonight. All I have to say is that she gave what is possibly the strangest celebrity interview ever.
"It is a small u …opinionata that is getting blown currently out of proportions. I have no stating reasons why anyone should worry about me. Clearly, I am a very strong, top-of-the line, always riding to it personage. I have no worries myself, nor do I exude, exhibit or possess within my living stratus any reason why someone should worry my behalf. It's completely fictional."
She is like that character on In Living Color who would just make up words that kind of sounded real. Lark has some issues and I wish that she would see a doctor or get some help, both of which she refuses to do.
My boss does that same shit- making up words that sound like what he's trying to say but are not even close. So while Larks quote may be hard to understand, I get the jist of it.

She absolutely needs some help. This is not an addiction thing, this is a mental illness thing and it's pretty sad to see. I'm getting sick of seeing her on the gossip pages because this isn't a Lohan train wreck, this is a woman battling illness.

ReplyDeleteI think I've been honest about being mentally ill: Depressive/anxiety disorders. Complex PTSD. I'm actually agoraphobic. These MI stories break my heart. I can't imagine having my episodes out there in the public eye ala Britney. I had a breakdown 3 years ago and went bathshit on Phacebook (key doesn't work!!) and...yeah, it was bad. So, get help, sweetie. =)
Made up words that my pal Roo uses: bizottic, escapegoat, exleast, and others. lol Love her dearly but wench can't tawk!
I think there's something rather brilliant in making up words that sound kinda like existing words but different, and for which the meaning is nonetheless clear.

ReplyDeleteI can joke and laugh about it now, but I am ten years down the road in managing my mental illness. And I completely agree - it's unthinkable to imagine dealing with these issues in the public eye. I didn't even want my closest family members to see me then.
But, as we've learned recently with a family member, the situation becomes infinitely more complex and tragic when the person who's ill denies it and refuses treatment. Like I guess Lark is doing.

@Amber...yep. Bizottic is, indeed, a combo oph bizarre and exotic. She still uses those words. I can deal with bizottic, but escapegoat and exleast-instead oph AT least...shuddering violently here. lol Gahd, I love that girlie!
I cringed through reading that second paragraph. If it's not a mental illness of some kind, then it sounds like she's had a stroke and is having verbal communication problems. (I don't mean that in a hurtful or negative way, just to clarify.)
ReplyDeleteIt's unfortunate that there's such a stigma against admitting to mental illness (I don't personally think that it is--you have a broken finger, you fix it, and this is no different to me). Whatever the case, it sounds like she needs some kind of help.

Okay, I finally watched the clip. She's actually using all of the words correctly, but they still seem oddly-placed. I'm not sure I...get it.

Personally, I'm not sure why her mother would lie. THAT said, Lark also certainly has the right not to disclose. I mean, she needn't feel any shame -- after all, she's in good company...Fru, Reeses, myself, and a host of others in Hollywood and the world at large! We can be awesome, creative people with full lives, no doubt. But she may feel that she doesn't want to be an MI poster girl.
I mean, I don't know. I hope she figures out...whatever she needs to figure out. I know from experience that the meds merry-go-round is a total PITA. Finding what works, and without side effects, can be as much of a nightmare as the symptoms themselves.
She sounded fine until that last bit, where it kind of seemed like the stuff the question was making her confront made her extremely nervous. I almost felt like she stopped making a ton of sense because she was trying really hard to think/talk through sudden paralyzing panic. Anyone else know what I mean?

@nova- thats the sense that I got, as well. She wasnt manic, affect was appropriate, and she was pretty coherent. It seemed like she was trying to come up with the nicest way of saying that she was fine, but was super nervous about answering the question...and she tripped herself up a little. But what she said did still make sense. I bet that there are a lot of emotions around that question that she has to deal with, and it is understandable that she would have some anxiety surrounding the subject matter. That's not to say that she isn't bipolar, but that I don't personally see any reason to believe that she is based on that interview.

ReplyDeleteSeriously, she may have aphasia. You believe you are saying the right word but other people realize you aren't. This is a neurological disorder in which people misuse words yet they are unaware of it. My friend has a very mild form of it.
ReplyDeleteIt also may be a symptom of schizophrenia, it is referred to as word salad. I don't think she is trying to sound more eloquent, I think she is struggling to sound put together. And she most likely is unaware that she doesnt. It's not something she woukd have control over like Lil C.
I agree sounds like she has Broca's aphasia.
Deleteyeahh...but aphasia generally involves some damage to Werneke's or Broca's areas (or lesions in cortex, stoke or dementia. It's possible that she has a more progressive form like have PPA or PJA, but she seemed to make too much sense for either and she had no problem understanding what was said to her. She also appeared to make too much sense for it to be "word salad". Generally the words chosen are much more random. I see what you're saying, though...that is often associated with schizophrenia or dementia, also with Wernicke's. It's usually much more compulsive and jarbled though. It's hard to arm chair diagnose someone from a minute or two of video, however...

ReplyDeleteI also wonder if she could have had a small stroke. After my mother had her stroke, her words were always very jumbled, but she could remember numbers and directions without fail.
Being agoraphobic absolutely sucks. I have suffered from it for over 20 years.
I hope, too, that she gets help.
IF it were aphasia, it would be more likely to be Wernicke's. Broca's presents as more of a problem with structure. They have problems forming sentances, sometimes even fragments, and omit conjunctions/adverbs/etc. It's more oftne non-fluent...lots of pauses and you cvan see the effort behind production of words. wernicke's is fluent...no effort is needed to get the words out. The problem for them is that they often cont use the right words. Often they'll use something that sounds similiar or is semantically similar. They often also have trouble comprehending, Broca's patients do not.

ReplyDeleteThis is textbook Schizophasia. I would say that she is right when she says that she doesn't have bipolar disorder, this sounds more like Schizophrenia. But if she's not a danger to herself or others, it's her decision if she wants to get help for it. I hope she does.

ReplyDeleteI saw this interview and HATED it. It was manipulation of the lowest kind. The show, reporter and network should be ashamed of themselves. Do you hear voices? Ugh. How can people with mental illness ever get a break with this kind of witch hunt? Imagine saying to a person with cancer, how long did it take for your hair to fall out?
