This is TIME's person of the year short list. Who are you picking from this list?
Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo!; Mohammed Morsi, president of Egypt; Undocumented Americans; Bill and Hillary Clinton; President Barack Obama; Malala Yousafzai, the student activist from Pakistan who survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban; Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple; and the Higgs Boson and Italian physicist Fabiola Giannati.
Obama. Like him or hate him, he's done a lot for the country and changed the face of the country by earning re-election.

ReplyDeletePlease forgive my ignorance on some of the names on this list. However, based on what I do know, I'd say Bill Clinton. He was such a vocal, visible force on the campaign trail and he really resurrected his career. I'm not sure that Obama's victory would've been sealed without Clinton.

ReplyDeleteThrough all the negativity, even Hillary Clinton agrees that Mohammed Morsi was able to negotiate an Israeli-Palestinian settlement. I think he can take a lot of credit for the Palestinian recognition at the UN.
ReplyDeleteEgypt is being stirred up now internally by troublemakers from the old regime who don't want to lose their indoor welfare benefits. Morsi has done a fabulous job in foreign relations-on the Palestinian and Syrian fronts. He is not a wild-eyed boogeyman, he is thoughtful, erudite, and represents the majority of the Egyptian and Arab people. Those who are seeking to undermine him for their own political greed are going to ruin the best chance for democracy and peace this region will ever have.
Turkish Taffy, my husband is Egyptian with a lot of family still there and Morsi is nothing but another dictator! He only made peace between Hamas and Israel to try to have the US in his pocket! Why the US government hadsnt spoken out about his power grab? They're afraid to anger him and start a war over there! But meanwhile, women and minorities have no rights and no voice!!! Protesters demanding equal rights are being beaten in the streets and this referendum on this monstrosity he's calling a constitution is a joke!!

@ justsaying - you're right - Hitler was chosen one year because he had had the most influence on current events that year. And one year Time copped out and put some shiny stuff on the cover and said the person of the year was "You". Being Person of the Year isn't necessarily an honor.

I do want to hear whats said behind closed doors, no matter what party it is. ReplyDeleteSupreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts! His decision to keep Obamacare was incredible. I never thought I would see something like that in my lifetime. It seemed that court was totally political, but that decision showed, at least one, justice can actually look at the law.

ReplyDeleteI'm on the Malala train too. She is a role model and icon to people around the world. She's exhibited far more courage than most people have or ever will have in the face of terrorists. I totally expect to see her on the cover of Time magazine.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking it's Obama. So many were convinced he'd be a one-term president, but he got stronger and put together a great campaign. Now he actually seems to have the resolve to get some things on his list done, and has shown real leadership in crisis (Hurricane Sandy, Sandy Hook shooting). He's no Carter, that's for sure.

Malala Yousafzai, far and away the best choice. She stood up to the Taliban, to do something we take for granted in the US. She wants an education. She is a truly heroic person in ways that make everyone else on the list look small.
