Your Turn

This is TIME's person of the year short list. Who are you picking from this list?

Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo!; Mohammed Morsi, president of Egypt; Undocumented Americans; Bill and Hillary Clinton; President Barack Obama; Malala Yousafzai, the student activist from Pakistan who survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban; Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple; and the Higgs Boson and Italian physicist Fabiola Giannati.

  1. Obama. Like him or hate him, he's done a lot for the country and changed the face of the country by earning re-election.

He seems to be good father, thoughtful leader and decent person. For a muslin ;)

  2. I really wonder if they'll do a last-minute add-in, like the teacher who died while protecting her class or something like that.

  3. Please forgive my ignorance on some of the names on this list. However, based on what I do know, I'd say Bill Clinton. He was such a vocal, visible force on the campaign trail and he really resurrected his career. I'm not sure that Obama's victory would've been sealed without Clinton.

  4. I would have had "The Florida Voter" or the "Battleground State Voter" or even "The Voter" after the fight that was fought with the GOP trying to suppress the vote but if that can't be then definitely OBAMA!

    1. That is perfect, not only for the US, but also the people in Egypt who are voting for a constitution right now.

  5. I like didi's suggestion. Or how about "the 47%."

    ReplyDelete
  6. Malala.

    @Didi love it!

    ReplyDelete
  7. I will go with Malala Yousafzai.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Bill & Hil Clinton. They were both in the spotlight during the election, but I gotta give it to Hilary as she even worked her way into becoming a meme.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Higgs Boson, hands down. That was a huge discovery!!

@Amber He does have the best tweets :)

  10. Marissa Mayer. She's 37 and heads one of the top companies in America.

  11. Malala Yousafzai

  12. Malala. When I was asked my reason for signing the petition to nominate her for the Nobel Prize, I said 'Education defeats evil.' Amazing young lady.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Malala, the student activist from Pakistan who survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban

    ReplyDelete
  14. Definitely Malala. Fuck the Taliban!

  15. (why they're on the list. Sorry, got confused by all the html code, haha)

  16. Malala and everything she stands for.

  17. Obviously my man BARACK! <3

    Malala, I second Vicki's sentiments.

  19. Undocumented Americans.

  21. President Obama
Bill and Hilary Clinton - power couple of the year
    Malala

  22. Bill and Hilary Clinton.

Off the list, Aung San Suu Kyi.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Malala Yousafzai

  24. Malala - what a courageous young woman. Kids drop out of school every day and here she is, getting shot because all she wants is an education.

I think the 47% is a great idea, too :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Arab women. They have been really instrumental (and unfortunate casualties) in the civil war in Syria as well as the the unfortunate events in Gaza.

    ReplyDelete
  26. The young student.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I like Rafi's idea.

On the list though, I go with Malala.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Malala - she is our future.

  29. Through all the negativity, even Hillary Clinton agrees that Mohammed Morsi was able to negotiate an Israeli-Palestinian settlement. I think he can take a lot of credit for the Palestinian recognition at the UN.
Egypt is being stirred up now internally by troublemakers from the old regime who don't want to lose their indoor welfare benefits. Morsi has done a fabulous job in foreign relations-on the Palestinian and Syrian fronts. He is not a wild-eyed boogeyman, he is thoughtful, erudite, and represents the majority of the Egyptian and Arab people. Those who are seeking to undermine him for their own political greed are going to ruin the best chance for democracy and peace this region will ever have.

    1. Turkish Taffy, my husband is Egyptian with a lot of family still there and Morsi is nothing but another dictator! He only made peace between Hamas and Israel to try to have the US in his pocket! Why the US government hadsnt spoken out about his power grab? They're afraid to anger him and start a war over there! But meanwhile, women and minorities have no rights and no voice!!! Protesters demanding equal rights are being beaten in the streets and this referendum on this monstrosity he's calling a constitution is a joke!!

  30. Hands down, Malala. She is an amazing young woman that deserves more accolades and interest so her story is NOT forgotten and their worthy cause becomes a non issue some day. (my hope)

    ReplyDelete
  31. I hope it's Malala.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Malala.

definitely NOT the individual who is in charge of droning multiple countries, killing thousands of innocent civilians, including MANY pakistani children.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Malala - an extraordinarily courageous, brave and intelligent lady

    ReplyDelete
  34. From that list, Giannati is the obvious choice. The discovery of the Higgs-Boson is so significant, we don't even grasp its ramifications yet.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Malala. A young but strong woman of tremendous courage and dignity.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Malala Yousafzai, definitely! I don't see anyone else on that list with the sort of courage that girl has shown.

I don't get the logic behind nominating politicians for being politicians, or CEOs for being CEOs.

    ReplyDelete
  37. In view of choices in years past, Time's Person of the Year need be influential, not positive, nice, admired or liked.
Newtown is the 13th mass murder - just for this year- and the second of two last week.
I had also heard since Columbine there have been 30.

    I nominate Mass Murderers.

    ReplyDelete
  38. @ justsaying - you're right - Hitler was chosen one year because he had had the most influence on current events that year. And one year Time copped out and put some shiny stuff on the cover and said the person of the year was "You". Being Person of the Year isn't necessarily an honor.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Time has really lost its influence and relevance, hasn't it.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Giannati in my heart, but most likely the Clintons. Hillary is stepping down as Secretary of State, Bill helped Obama clinch the election, they are enormously powerful and generally well-liked.

    ReplyDelete
  41. The Prez or the Undocumented worker.

Obama is not a liar or a Muslim..if he were a Muslin he would admit it.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I wouldn't pick anyone on the list. How about Lindsay Lohan? Joking! I'd pick George Lucas, who took the $4 billion he got from selling the Star Wars franchise and gave all away to eduction.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Malala Yousafzai: "I don't mind if I have to sit on the floor at school. All I want is education. And I'm afraid of no one." She's a 14-year-old girl who faced actual physical danger most of us will thankfully never know. Fuck the Taliban is right.

  44. Off Topic - There's no WAY Enty lives in California. If he did, he would be getting up every morning and posting starting at 3:00am. And winding down at 12 noon. And for someone who gets most of their stories from the Daily Mail, it would seem he most likely lives in the UK.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Enty's early morning posts go up at exact 15 minute intervals starting at 6 am PT. From that I infer that they are scheduled, which means he writes them in advance. If you check TMZ at night before bed or the DM, it's likely the evening stories will be your morning CDAN posts.

  46. It has got to be the person who recorded the 47% speech. He cost the repubs the election. All repub money, superpacs and propaganda- undone by this person. Who i think should get a medal. I do want to hear whats said behind closed doors, no matter what party it is. If i hv to chiose from the list, ill go with bison higgs in the hope that even after readings realms about it, i may eventually understand it, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  47. President Obama. I have great hopes for him now that he does not have to win any more elections. He has tremendous power and hopefully can use it to do some good in his second term without that pressure.

I love the Clintons tho. :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. @car54, like bring the troops home? or cut aid to foreign countries? or reduce our obscene federal deficit/debt? or help legalize pot? or cut spending? or keep taxes low on the average citizen? or create a more transparent administration? or help us move out of this economic depression?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Malala Yousafzai.

    ReplyDelete
  50. President Obama - how could you not choose him? Of course, if Michelle Obama were on the short list, she might beat him.

I love the first family - they are wonderful.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Sorry, I wouldn't pick anyone from that list. If it were up to me I'd pick Elon Musk, founder and CEO of SpaceX.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Malala Yousafzai because she speaks for the next generation of muslim girls. It is outrageous to get attacked just because she wants an education. Apparently Pakistani men are afraid of a girl with a book.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts! His decision to keep Obamacare was incredible. I never thought I would see something like that in my lifetime. It seemed that court was totally political, but that decision showed, at least one, justice can actually look at the law.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Malala or Higgs Boson. They both represent the power of education.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Anonymous5:22 PM

I agree that the ramifications of discovering the Higgs-Boson are incredible. Definitely Giannati. I would also nominate the man who recently came up with a theory for how to build warp drive--Harold White.

  56. I'm on the Malala train too. She is a role model and icon to people around the world. She's exhibited far more courage than most people have or ever will have in the face of terrorists. I totally expect to see her on the cover of Time magazine.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I'm thinking it's Obama. So many were convinced he'd be a one-term president, but he got stronger and put together a great campaign. Now he actually seems to have the resolve to get some things on his list done, and has shown real leadership in crisis (Hurricane Sandy, Sandy Hook shooting). He's no Carter, that's for sure.

  58. Time will be out of print within a year. Look at Newsweek. Irrelevant. /notapoliticalstatement

    ReplyDelete
  59. Should be Victoria Soto.

    ReplyDelete
  60. It's too bad this is the short list. I think it should be "Anonymous." They fascinate me.

  62. HIGGS BOSON DUDE!!!

  63. I would choose President Obama.

  64. MalalaMalalaMalala!!

  65. I second Amber's vote of Kim Jong Un. If he's good enough to win People's "Sexiest Man Alive" contest (good job, The Onion!) he's good enough for Time!

Update: Kim Jong Un won the Time reader's poll? What the what?

    http://newsfeed.time.com/2012/12/13/and-the-winner-of-times-person-of-the-year-reader-poll-is

Vera L - I'm taking your "for a Muslin" joke as referencing a ridiculous protest sign made famous on the internets that called Obama a "half-breed Muslin." Still trying to figure out how a person that's one-half cloth could exist!

  66. Malala Yousafzai, far and away the best choice. She stood up to the Taliban, to do something we take for granted in the US. She wants an education. She is a truly heroic person in ways that make everyone else on the list look small.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Malala or Obama - I'm an Australian and I respect them both... let's just leave it as that.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Oh shitballs, I forgot all about Kim Jong Un... hmmm let's just leave him for sexiest North Korean Beloved Ruler Living instead shall we?!
