I give this A++ lister a lot of grief and goodness knows she is the biggest diva on the planet. I know she didn't invent diva, but she has perfected it into something that no one will probably ever be able to match. While other people talk about what they are going to do or try and get a bunch of people do some giving, our A lister puts her purse out there and writes really big checks to help kids. She has given at least a million dollars a year every year for the last ten years to children's organizations. Nothing in the news. No splashy announcements. She goes and visits the organizations when she can. Sometimes there is press there, but she prefers it to be all about her and the kids. At most of them she does not even wear much makeup and doesn't wear heels either. The diva is gone and in the diva's place is someone who wants to do what she can to change the lives of as many people as she can for the better. She has thousands of kids who are truly thankful for her this holiday season.

I love Mariah as crazy as she can be sometimes and am not shocked this was her. She has always had a soft spot for children.

ReplyDeleteAw. Mariah's definitely full of herself, but she's never seemed really mean or selfish like a lot of other stars, so I'm not too surprised that this is her. I think she's just high-maintenance.

ReplyDeleteWith Mariah, I could always tell, that even though she IS the Queen of all Divas, that there was something good and sweet about her.
There are others however, I'm looking at you Angelina Jolie, that I just can't stand, no matter what they do.

@kelgela - I agree. I feel like AJ looks kind of dead inside. There isn't even a sadness about her; she just emits coldness, to me.

ReplyDeleteThis is the same woman who, IIRC, once circled a block until the hotel she was staying at rolled out a special red carpet for her. There might have also been some crazy requirement for candles lining the red carpet and getting paps there. (This sound familiar to anyone else?)
ReplyDeleteAnywho, weird dichotomy, but I can't give her too hard a time over that if she's secretly helping out kids on a large scale. Then again, I was sorta impressed with her "plain" appearance in Precious. Seemed very un-Mariah, but she was good in the role and it obviously wouldn't have worked for her to get all diva about it.

ReplyDeleteThis got me all misty eyed, I am now a huge fan of hers because of this, I too thought she was just kind of a spoiled shallow diva. However, she writes all her own stuff, to the best of my knowledge, and that's how she's so wealthy. She is genuinely talented. Who cares if she's a diva, she has the talent and money to back it up. I'm so glad to hear that someone with that much money and power has such a big heart. Sniffles!!! I got something in my eye is all.

ReplyDeleteKnew this was her and even guessed it at the time. I lived locally near one of her Fresh Air camps, and she would be over there every year. Pics would only turn up in the organization's releases to press, and she was always w/o makeup in camp attire and non-diva mode. This is why I always give her a pass.
ReplyDeleteI've never been a fan of her music -- it's just not my style -- but I respect her talent. I've also always thought that she's only a diva because she really wants to give her fans only her very, very best, and that in private she's probably a kind person. And I do think that she and Nick and the kids are far too precious for words. Glad to see that I'm probably right on all counts. :-)

I have a little Mariah story. When she was in Australia a few years ago she came to a restaurant my best friend worked at. She called me and told me she was there as she knew my niece who was early teens was a big fan. We went there towards the end of service to pick her up, Mariah saw my niece staring boggle eyed at her and asked her to come over and say hi. She was very sweet and gracious, signed a CD for her.

ReplyDeleteThis is the difference between Mariah and AJ. AJ would make sure this was public and I see every good deed she does as calculated. Mariah used to annoy me a bit but since she's been with Nick I think they are really cute together. He seems to find Mariah's Diva-ness adorable. Until yesterday, I didn't know Nick had his own money/career so I learned something!

She and Brad donate 50% of their earnings each year to charity (in 2008, over $7 million for AJ)...without press, without fanfare, without putting themselves in the spotlight. So before any of you condemn her lizard, cold eyes who would only do something if it benefited her...well perhaps you are wrong there too.
I knew this one. Ive had friends that had daughters in camp Mariah. One even named a baby after her for the work she did for her eldest daughter. Fresh air fund NYC.

It is well known (and easily verifiable) that she is extraordinarily generous with both her money and time.
My opinions of Mariah Carey changed for the better whenever they interviewed by either Oprah or Barbara Walters, not long after their babies were born. Nick in particular, he seemed like a truly awesome fellow, and that seems to have rubbed off on her.

The Jolie-Pitt Foundation is where they structure their money to get the max tax write off for their private tavel. The majority of funds go through that foundation out of the USA and that is a different paper trail. I am sure somewhere children benefit something from their endeavors. Follow the money trail with those 2, it gets more and more layered.
