    Unfortunatly, my best friends family had to bury their baby boy this week. Everyone- please hug your kids and be thankful every day you have them in your life. My heart broke a little this week and I'm so thankful for my nieces and nephews.

  6. A smart and stylish girl you see,
    Belle of good society,
    Not too strict but rather free,
    Yet as right as right can be.
    Never forward, never bold,
    Not too hot and not too cold,
    But the very thing I'm told,
    That in your arms you'd like to hold.

    Ta ra ra boom de ay! - 8X

    I'm not extravagantly shy,
    And when a nice young man is nigh,
    For his heart I have a try,
    And faint away with tearful sigh.
    When the nice young man in haste,
    Will support me round the waist,
    I don't come to while thus embraced,
    Til of my lips he steals a taste.

    Ta ra ra boom de ay!

    I'm a timid flower of innocence,
    Pa says that I have no sense,
    I'm one eternal big expense,
    But men say that I'm just immense.
    E're my verses I conclude,
    I'd like it known and understood,
    Though free as air, I'm never rude,
    I'm not too bad and not too good!

    Ta ra ra boom de ay!

    The staff is super nice, and the chef is incredible. I generally take all out of town guests here, as it's always a hit with them.
    My personal favorites are the Pastaless Lasagne, the Vegetable Curry, and the Sunday Brunch Poblano and Mushroom Tacos.

    (If Enty actually reads the comments, he would probably love the Bacon Waffle A La Mode with Bacon Ice Cream and the Bacon Wrapped Bacon. ;-)

    Final thing of my L.A. favorites is to go Downtown to San Antonio Winery and get a case of San Antonio Cardinale. It has become my wife's personal favorite wine in the world, so always good to have a bottle on hand. ;-)

    Joe Hill version

    I had a job once threshing wheat
    Worked sixteen hours with hands and feet.
    And when the moon was shining bright,
    They kept me working all the night.
    One moonlight night, I hate to tell,
    I "accidentally" slipped and fell.
    My pitchfork went right in between
    Some cog wheels of that thresh-machine.

    Ta-ra-ra-boom-de-ay!
    It made a noise that way.
    And wheels and bolts and hay,
    Went flying every way.
    That stingy rube said, "Well!
    A thousand gone to hell.
    But I did sleep that night,
    I needed it all right.

    Next day that stingy rube did say,
    "I'll bring my eggs to town today;
    You grease my wagon up, you mutt,
    And don't forget to screw the nut.
    I greased his wagon all right,
    But I plumb forgot to screw the nut,
    And when he started on that trip,
    The wheel slipped off and broke his hip.

    Ta-ra-ra-boom-de-ay!
    It made a noise that way,
    That rube was sure a sight,
    And mad enough to fight;
    His whiskers and his legs
    Were full of scrambled eggs;
    I told him, "That's too bad –
    I'm feeling very sad"

    And then that farmer said, "You turk!
    I bet you are an "I Won't Work".
    He paid me off right there, By Gum!
    So I went home and told my chum.
    Next day when threshing did commence,
    My chum was Johnny on the fence;
    And 'pon my word, that awkward kid,
    He dropped his pitchfork, like I did.

    Ta-ra-ra-boom-de-ay!
    It made a noise that way,
    And part of that machine
    Hit Reuben on the bean.
    He cried, "Oh me, oh my;
    I nearly lost my eye"
    My partner said, "You're right –
    It's bedtime now, good night"

    But still that rube was pretty wise,
    These things did open up his eyes.
    He said, "There must be something wrong;
    I think I work my men too long"
    He cut the hours and raised the pay,
    Gave ham and eggs for every day,
    Now gets his men from union hall,
    And has no "accidents" at all.

    Ta-ra-ra-boom-de-ay!
    That rube is feeling gay;
    He learned his lesson quick,
    Just through a simple trick.
    For fixing rotten jobs
    And fixing greedy slobs,
    This is the only way,
    Ta-ra-ra-boom-de-ay!

    Take your pick!

    Also, the system is up. Yay! Everyone and their mother is running reports. *scowl.* Never, in my entire professional career has my filing been so up-to-date.

  27. Just a plug for a website that is very helpful for those of us in hurricane country:

    http://spaghettimodels.com/

    It's run by a guy as (I think) a hobby - he gathers info from a lot of different weather sites, including NOAA and closely tracks tropical storms, etc. He also has some good links to weather forecasts of different cities at the bottom. I have no connection with this guy, other than to slavishly follow his site during hurricane season.

    I feel freedom, and lightness of heart, but it's frightening and overwhelming because I was used to the cage. The sharp sea air on my face, feathering through my hair makes me feel exiliration but also fear, should I be happy or frightened? I can handle it,I can breath and walk through it, ask for help, I've got help, support, am taking steps to surround myself with healthy activities and people, to not have too much time on my hands, to dwell or get depressed. I find myself feeling lonely, needy, yearning for the closeness, the shallow comfort and fleeting security of a monster that loves and needs you. But I wouldn't trade my fresh air and the grace that I feel now, for all of the suffocating, dirty, rank air of my old gilded cage. I'd rather have nothing, than be nothing.

      Another one that is more "practical" but I just finished; and it literally changed my life over the past few months is The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron.

      I highly recommend to anyone who wants to become more creative in any aspect of their lives. I recommend the process to anyone who has maybe not followed their dreams, and needs an actual process to get back in touch with that part of themselves. If you do the Morning Pages and the other exercises - it is absolutely life changing on multiple levels over time.

    I am so sick of being stuck in this fucking cycle of being stressed beyond belief over money, then having anxiety attacks even thinking about interviewing for a job, then not having money to see a therapist to fix it, stress, anxiety, money, stress, anxiety, money. I can't even think about anything else anymore, and every time there is even the sliiiiightest sliver of hope, there is a new bill that shows up. There is nowhere to turn for help. I've mentioned on here before how both my family and my husband's family are batshit insane psychopaths, it is just the two of us trying to forge our way in the world, but it just keeps getting harder and harder and harder to deal with day to day anything. I feel like I'm just falling deeper and deeper into a hole that there is no getting out of and I wish to fucking god I could just talk to a doctor about this and fix myself, but again..there's no money. I am fucked. There is no way out. I should have just killed myself before I had a kid. I'm sorry you have to grow up with a shell as a mother. I'm so ready to give up.

I am irritated at people who buy old homes in a historic neighborhood, then don't want to renovate the home (even though renovation would cost less than building a 2 million dollar home), instead want to tear down this beautiful home and build some plastic playhouse in its place. Yes, it's their property, however at least have an appreciation for the value/atmosphere of the other homes in the neighborhood. We live in such a throwaway society. This is happening in a neighboring suburb where I live.

  71. Crap! I have to go to work now and will be MIA for awhile!

    @Amber - I can totally relate. I'm glad you are busy though. I dream of a life of leisure but keep slogging away. I am very happy with my patients these days and love making a difference in their lives. Especially now that it's sinus and allergy time. Acupuncture helps so much!

    @dragon - whew! I was worried! Glad it's not too bad. I forgot to tell you about gargling with salt water. That is sometimes the most simple and easy cure, when nothing else works!

    @seaward - Nov/Dec of last year was my deepest darkest hour. I thought we would lose our house. The bills were piling up. I was despondent. I reached out and asked for help and some beautiful women who I will treasure forever (you know who you are) came to the rescue with love and kindness and support. That little push got me out of the funk and I was able to turn it around emotionally. My business is thriving now and I am so happy. And I give thanks every day and work on it everyday. It still a struggle. It will take me years to pay back all that I owe, but I have support and no one can do it on their own. The angels are there to help you just need to ask!

I have looked into sliding scale/pro bono therapy but my husband makes too much, if you can believe it. Of course they look at gross income & not net, otherwise they would see that we are barely skating above the poverty line thanks to garnishments. Whatever. I go through these bouts every couple of weeks, I can at least recognize them now, so there's that. I should've known to stay out of an anything goes Your Turn just as I felt one coming on.

  104. seaward and sherry, i've been there several times and will never forget those horrible feelings. i have been ok for about 10 years now and attribute it to free or reduced rate mental health treatment through my county, including antidepressants. i also make myself walk outside every day and that helps alot. i finally got most of my bills paid off and have found that driving an old car and living in a lower income house is ok with me because i am not trying to dodge bill collectors anymore.

    and volunteering helped me alot! one of the side benefits of it is that i got my current job because they were impressed by my enthusiasm as a volunteer and offered to pay me to work regularly for them. not a lot of money but the first job i have had that i actually enjoy going to!

    both of you are in my heart....and i just wish i could give each of you a big hug......and then a kick in the butt for sherry because i know sometimes thats whats needed to get someone out of bed and out of the house.

  105. Dragon, sorry for giggling at you, but the idea of a dragon with a throat on fire is kinda hilarious! :D

    Years ago I had a sore throat that would not. go. away. It was hell. Turned out it was part of my stomach trouble, but it took about 2 years to figure it out! They gave me some different things to try:

    =====

    Liquid antacid
    Stuff like Maalox or whatever, gargle with it. Regardless of why it's raw and angry, it should put out some of the fire. Maybe use small amounts frequently, then swallow it.

    =====

    Rosehips/horehound tea
    This is awesome for getting rid of colds. Buy about an ounce of each herb from a hippie supermarket. Put about 1/2 teaspoon of each into a large cup of water, steep, then drink two cups. You can use hot or cold, you can add other tea bags, sweeteners. It ain't yummy but it shouldn't be horrifyingly nasty; if too bitter, add water.

    My experience with it is, if you drink it at the very first sign of an oncoming cold, it'll be GONE the next day.

    =====

    As said above, vitamin C, Cepacol, as well as Sucrets, cough drops, honey & lemon, ice, all those are great.

    Stay clear of homeopathic products that list "ingredients" in amounts like 12x, 5C. They're not amounts, they're DILUTION amounts... there's literally not one molecule left, and even if there was, they're random ingredients that don't work anyway. Like that Oscillococcinum, the ingredient is duck liver, but diluted to zero. Zicam is an exception, it has actual stuff in it.

    Hope you get well soon! Sore throats suck.

  106. @amber, that is a fantastic idea. I have an employee who lost his 13 year old brother in a car accident. At his interview, in answer to the question why do you want to work with kids? He said, "you know about my brother, right? Well, I have all this love to give, and I feel like working with kids will help me fill up this hole in my heart. I feel like I need to have more joy in my life, and there is a lot of happiness here".

  108. Seaward,
    Have you checked here? http://www.mentalhealthassociation.com/
    If you click on 'Find a Therapist' (toward the bottom of the page) you can narrow down your search by county, gender, insurance etc.
    You might want to start there and see if you can find someone with cash only. I had a friend who used to see a GraduatED student organization who charged a minimum donation of $5. Also, they had specialists on staff to help with specifics of abuse etc.
    Here is also a clinic list in Indiana which lists it's services. http://www.needymeds.org/free_clinics.taf?_function=list&state=in
    Here is a great list of all mental health links in Indiana. http://www.mhaindy.net/mental_health_links.html
    Here is another great link of a list you might find helpful. http://www.regionalmentalhealth.org/r_nationalstate.php
    In my opinion the hardest thing to do is make that initial phone call. When you put it off it makes everything seem worse.

    Get each CDAN'r to dress as a different, ridiculous celebrity. A yellow-studded-hatted, diaper-wearing Bieber, a waffle-wearing and beating Chris Brown, knocked-up Kim with Kanye, drunken Tara Reid, Lohan as late-in-life Liz. Basically, build your own modern Hollywood Village People. You could each mime the letters "C D A N" like the 70's disco kings did with "YMCA."

    If you're assigned a celebrity where you're not familiar with their mannerisms, watch a few episodes of "Absolutely Fabulous" and act like that. Nobody will know the difference!

  112. Seaward, so sorry to hear about your troubles! You and your husband are lucky to have each other to lean on at least. When I was unemployed, not only was I down because I was jobless, but I felt like a loser. I was incredibly down on myself, and looking back I shouldn't have been. I hope you, as well as lizjaxe, are at least keeping your self confidece up. It is an incredibly shitty situation, but reflects absolutely nothing on who you are.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Seaward, I'm so very sorry it's looking rough for you! Anxiety and fear... they're so sneaky, they can be as bad as physical sickness if not worse! But they're just as real, just as awful, and they're not your fault.

    It's ugly out there. In my peer group, a number of people have had to do charity drives to get dental work or doctor visits paid for. Where I live, there's a problem where they'll give you information about groups that help, but you call them and they're either broke or they don't actually help people after all.

    But still it's worth looking. There's gotta be mental health providers beyond the prevention hotlines. The fact you have a child should sway in your favor to receive help. Regardless, there's a whole bunch of people here who care very much about you, care about everyone here.

    Huh, I wanted to write something uplifting but it seems I've failed! Sorry about that! The point though is you're not a bad person and none of it is your fault. I hope very much something works out where you can see someone, but in the meantime, you've got a home here with lots of folks who care!

  115. Do you remember that Target Lady Snl skit? I went for seed supplies at a store that starts with a "W", and the cashier started telling me, after a perfunctory how are you to her, how she just lost her mother to cancer a few months ago. Her father passed away six years ago she said, and she was sad because her friend had just stopped by the store to tell her that although she had a mastectomy, her breast cancer was back. So the cashier was having a terrible day. She told me about how her parents had taken out a reverse mortgage, and that the bank wasn't letting her go into the house to retrieve any mementoes. Nothing. All to be auctioned. At the very end of checking out (I had 30 some odd seed packets plus stuff), she tells me she's 57 and has never been in love, and she doesn't think she'll find anyone at her age. She felt very alone.

    I told her I believed that there is someone for everyone, and not to give up hope. And that she's not alone. I told her I'd pray for her friend (I'm not very religious but I meant it).

    She thanked me for listening. I walked away wishing i could do something more for her. I hope all of you who are going through rough spots, whether lurking or not, know you have someone to listen to you, here.

  116. This is a wonderful and warm community, I love reading your posts after a difficult day, and lately it seems to get more difficult. But when the days start to wear me down there is a food bank nearby and I volunteer with a group of amazing people, many of them have experienced homelessness, abuse, addictions and periods of long term unemployment and lost everything. But they laugh, they share and they are quick with a hug and tell stories of how they managed to move past the difficult periods and now they want to give back. Right now, a few people on a facebook site are stalking me because of my new position, someone posted my personal contact information and now people are posting horrible messages about me and I am receiving calls at all hours. I am going to the food bank tomorrow and hang out with people who have have walked through darkness and truly enjoy being a part of a little community, just like this place. For all of you who are going through a difficult time, it will get better. I want to thank all of you for your wit, your clever posts, generous hearts, hot gossip and the genuine compassion you show each other.

    Well, he calls himself a wizard and he acts like he has this whole magic thing going on, but he's more of a Wizard of Oz, if you know what I mean. But... so many people like him, and I've come to the conclusion that if he's able to make people feel good about themselves and be happy, then more power to him! Even though I think he's a phony, lol

    Yeah, that fire was awful, I was really shocked because I used to go out to clubs all the time and my 17 year old niece goes now too (no, she doesn't hang out at adult clubs, the one she goes to are for kids at her age, lol) and nobody ever thinks about those kind of security things because we all expect everything is in order. So, it was pretty horrifing.

    As of right now, most people are in shock that a Brazilian rock singer has died, probably from an overdose. Even though we all knew he was an addict, nobody expected him to die so soon, he was 42. And he's from my hometown, which is not small but my sister had a friend who was good friends with him. I don't usually get this upset about a celebrity death, but this one, I really am...

    If there is a higher happiness then a watermelon, I am too, to be part of this community. And I'm also a ghostly burrito whore enty loving watermelon. BP will be back soon enough with his crazy posts, probably as Moxie again like last time, lol

    I'm on Day 17: Operation: Take No Shit. It's been hard for me, but I have to stick up for myself. Funny thing is, I would stick up fro most everyone else before I would do it for ME.

    I got with this guy and I was so hopeful, y'know? I really do love it here in NC: the slow pace has done wonders for my anxiety disorders. B/F has worked only 20 days in 15 months. He's not even pretending to LOOK for a job and I'm at my wit's end. I should clarify: we're more friends than anything at this point. I now see him as the second brother I never had.

    So, 17 days into O:TNS and I still am not buying his cigarettes and I feel pretty damn good about that. I had to tell myself: if he was a crackhead, would I pay for his drugs? It's the same difference to me.

    March...spring is such a bad time of the year for me:I lost my son in March of '78. Jason would have been 35 on March 16 and yes, I still grieve my baby. For whatever reason/s, I wasn't able to have another child. My parents both died (7 years apart) in May..so Mother's Day just plain old hurts. Hurts like bloody hell.

    I'm struggling here but not giving up. I can barely stand myself with the mood swings, but...I still have hope. I'm broke and don't know if I'll have enough food to get through the month (yes, I've gone to food banks, twice) and don't know how much longer I'll have electricity.

    So...to all my struggling CDAN'ers...don't give up hope! I enjoy reading the comments and love the quirkiness of you all. I'm not commenting as much cuz I don't feel like I have much to say. But I'm reading every day and cheering you all on whatever your situation may be.

    I would just like to say to you all: Be kind to yourself and to others. The world needs so much more kindness. Peace and light to you all.

    Thanks for listening. I'm late so not many will see this.

  123. Here's what I want to tell everyone about. Don't waste your money on the Oz movie. I had high hopes, but Franco and Kunis in particular are weirdly miscast. The acting is off and the story is off, and it was just awkward to watch. It was beautiful, though, and Zach Braff is the best part of the whole thing.

  126. + 1 on the unemployed group. Add to that taking care of a grandma who has Alzheimer's and is frequently verbally and physically abusive. I think what hurts the most is losing all of the friends I used to have because they do not understand any of the above.

    I'm ready to start a new chapter in life. A chapter full of good times and plenty of laughter.

  127. I'm trying to get some traction for this brilliant article about how the medical system in the US is rigged and corrupt and leaves good people bankrupt.

    Without apology for the need for you to copy and paste:

    http://healthland.time.com/2013/02/20/bitter-pill-why-medical-bills-are-killing-us

    Read this. Please.

    And please sign the petition https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/mandate-all-health-providers-maintain-public-list-most-common-procedures-and-their-costs/QTgKvLT7 to the White House to try to stop this travesty.

    I just had lunch with my BF - walking distance from where she works because she can only take 40-minute breaks - and she's an MD who works 7 days on/5 days on every two weeks to keep her kids in private schools. She read the article and she was furious – at the hospitals.

  128. Long time lurker...I love reading the comments and the community that is here, so it breaks my heart to know that there are so many that are struggling. Please know that it will pass, as trite as that may sound. Please be kind to yourselves, and know that there are plenty of us out here who have gone through our own knowing the pleasure of a welfare Christmas. Do what you can, when you can, find your resources and use them, and know there are others out here who are keeping positive thoughts for you in our hearts.

  129. @cheesey.burrito.whore - Perfection! Total name perfection!

    @Jamie2 - The health care system is a big f*cking mess. I am a self-employed acupuncturist and do all my own billing. Insurance is the biggest nightmare in the world. I don't think people realize what a game it is and how much padding goes into claims. The bullshit I have to do to get paid for my work is astounding. I spend hours and hours on the phone arguing with the claims department - whose job is to stall me and delay my payments so the big companies make interest off that money. Most of us went into healthcare to help people, change lives, make a different. We are by and large compassionate people who care about the wellbeing of others. Insurance and the masterlist make that almost impossible. I always have in the back of my mind, what things I can bill for and get paid, which companies will pay more, which codes are ok, etc.

    And when you wonder why it's now so expensive... Every time you see a doctor, some one in the back is submitting your claim with proper codes, tracking them and arguing when the don't go through. That's like 2-3 extra people above the actual MD and MA that see you in the office, plus the receptionist and office manager. And don't even get me started on the chargemaster. Poor people shouldn't have to be penalized bc they have to pay chargemaster prices when those with insurance get the discount. It's completely ass backwards and not fair. I have wanted to quit many times bc I can't do my job effectively, with the insurance chains around my neck.

    Sorry rant over. I read that article last week and was fuming for days!

  130. Fellow CDAN readers, I love you guys! I can certainly relate to your depression / anxiety / money issues. I was jobless, then homeless after my crazy mother kicked my children and I out of her house last August. With the help of the Family Promise program, my girls and I had food and shelter, and they helped us gain independence. On January first of this year, we got our own place again. Money is tight and my relationship with my parents has been destroyed. My fiancé and I both have crazy/sick families, and some days I don't know how I'll make it through my latest panic / sad attack but there is LIGHT at the end of the tunnel! There has to be! There is something much better than this, I am sure of it. I'll be praying for all of you guys seaward, Anna Nonymous, lizjaxe. We'll make it through this!

  131. I just found this quote and wanted to share after today's conversation. We have all been lost in the darkness at one time or another and felt the weight of desperation closing in. But it takes just one spark of light to clear that dark energy away. I feel like CDAN is that place to share the light and laughter of friendship. Thanks to you all.

    “At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us.” ~ Albert Schweitzer

    I start everyday reading the following website (the above quote is from there). Hope it may help some of you too! https://www.facebook.com/IlluminatingSouls
