Janeane Garofalo Has Meltdown

Last night, Janeane Garofalo performed at The Stand in NYC. According to a person who was there, they said, "It was sad. It was like something no one should see. It was shockingly disjointed, she was scrambling for words, she had no command and kept apologizing. In all seriousness, it was disturbing. What happened? Does anyone know? It was like she'd been seriously strung out nonstop for several days. She seemed incredibly f**ked up...it was really sad."

I haven't been able to find any videos uploaded to YouTube of the performance, but maybe someone will do so today. I would love to see it. She is supposed to perform again tonight at the same place.

  1. I've always suspected she had mental health issues. Extra stress or meds being off-kilter could make her seem odd.
No snark, I love her and think she's so funny.

    I hope she's okay.

Obama has the FBI helping Garofalo keep all the vids of her performance under wraps...

  5. This is sad. I live in NYC, but tix are sold out for the show (and I have dinner plans tonight anyway). Hope she is okay.

  6. Who is this crazy lady?

  7. @Cara Dee, she is a shining example of the dry wit and sarcasm so popular in the 1990s.

  8. Talk about whatever happened to....? She was on a roll at one time (movies, TV, comedy specials) and then just fell off. Enty know the reason why? Anyone? I am curious to know.

  9. Oh no! I love The Bowler! Short, sharp women with glasses who could be my sister are freaking awesome. Get well, Janeane!

  10. She was so cute in the beginning and showed a lot of promise. Then she became so angry - all.the.time. Her sting on Air America, every talk show appearance she did, interviews, etc. She was always enraged and, frankly, insulting to those who didn't agree with her philosophy on everything. It really put me off her. I almost didn't watch 24 the season she was on.

Hopefully she finds a way to deal with whatever is going on with her.

  11. I could've sworn she is part of COS...which may explain a melt down, no meds allowed. She does have some pretty right wing politics, a la Dennis Miller.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Right wing politics? Check your facts, "Me." You are dead wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Me, shes actually very liberal. But yes, shes pecululair, a la mental issues. She is also uber intelligent. Mb shes bi- polar? I eish her well

  14. Janeane, right wing?! Hahaaa!!

I like her a lot. Get well, girl! ;)

  15. I listen to the Nerdist a lot and love stand up so I'm left wanting to know what kind of venue was this and was she just trying out new material? Sometimes you just bomb.

  16. I absolutely adore her. She is intelligent, witty, unpretentious, and just plain awesome. I normally can't stand outspoken Hollywood liberals, but she never struck me as one of them. If she has mental health issues I hope she gets help. And I would be beyond glad if there is no YouTube video.

    1. Uh, no.She's horrible to work with, has a rep for being an angry boil on an ass wart. That said, she's admitted to mental health issues for decades. I know many folks who loathe dealing with her because of the unpredictability and wild swings that turn nasty. I liked her earliest work, but she needs a seat.

      Delete
    2. Di, confirms what I've heard from comedians who have worked with her. Loony toons.

      Delete
    3. She's a very outspoken liberal. Notice how you no longer see anti-war demonstrations? Gotta love the hypocrisy.

      Delete
  17. Oh yeah she's liberal alright. Polarizingly so (just like Miller is on the conservative side along with the Tucker Carlson types)
I liked her on Seinfeld, she was a great addition to his humor when she was on. Also she was adorable in Truth about Cats and Dogs.

I don't get how these folks (not just her) have managers who let them get onstage when they are unbalanced like that. It very well could be medical or just about anything but I would rather my client reschedule the show and risk a few ticked off fans than have them meltdown in front of everyone.

    1. Dennis Miller isn't too conservative, at least not socially. Hes pro gay marriage, pot legalization, and abortion. Theres a huge difference between social conservative & fiscal conservative. Tucker Carlson, ( he's not someone I consider relevant, but ok), is more than vein, but he mostly just likes attn, FWIW.

    2. Tucker carlson- what a putz

    3. @auntliddy, every time I see him, I think of that other putz, Tucker Max.

I used to love the name Tucker.

      Delete
    4. Didn't someone say that Tucker was closeted before? On topic: I like her & wish her well. I can only imagine being her in an industry that values vapid beauty over substance, & getting passed over for roles because of it.

  19. She is as lefty as they come! I don't think she's COS, either, although she did support some COS-based 9/11 treatment for first-responders or something, IIRC.

I feel like I read that she used to have alcohol issues, and got sober. Perhaps she's using again, or perhaps she has other MH issues. I think she can be funny as hell and I used to be a pretty big fan, but she IS just SO angry anymore. I hope she finds...whatever she needs. :-/

    ReplyDelete
  20. I LOVED -- and STILL love -- THE TRUTH ABOUT CATS AND DOGS. I saw myself a lot in Abby, although I'm not nearly as witty. And yum! Ben Chaplin.

Hee hee, Maja! I loved that one, too.

    "Don't Bogart that can...MAN."

    ReplyDelete
  21. what does her being a 'lefty' have to do with anything? she's having issues, obviously. that has nothing to do with her being 'liberal.' geesh. does EVERY fucking thing have to be political these days?

she's a funny, extremely intelligent person. whatever's going on with her, i hope she gets it together.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think people were trying to dredge up what we/ they knew about her, to fit it together to see why shes having issues. Not really meant to be politcal.

I love her...In fact a lot of people tell me that I remind them of her...looks, dress, humor, etc...anyhow she was awesome on The Larry Saunders Show! And I, to this day, stole and use her line from some stand up routine she did many years ago..."I just totally compromised the integrity of that room.." (meaning the bathroom) to get a chuckle in the right scenario. Hope she's ok!!!!

  23. I'm seeing her show on Friday. I'll report back.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I really like her. She's so wonderful and I hope she's okay. I just watched a documentary over the weekend called "Why We Laugh: Funny" and she was featured in it. I'd recommend it.

    ReplyDelete
  25. She had a regular role on the totally hilarious Adult Swim show Delocated. That show just ended. I think she is great and I hope she is ok.

    ReplyDelete
  26. This woman has so many people hating on her that I'll need to see a video or something first. She could have just bombed. I've seen interviews where she just wasn't funny so I can't automatically go with drug use or mental condition.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Dennis Miller might be more along the lines of Clint Eastwood in terms of conservative beliefs - socially moderately liberal but fiscally conservative.

As for Janeane (who I adored back in the 90's) well she probably had an off night - Kristen Schall just had a bad night performing too. Like I said this past weekend - somebody needs to get Reality Bites 2 made. Ben Stiller always seemed like a good support for her.

    "We're going to eat gas."

    ReplyDelete
  28. Eh, she probably just had a bad set! Maybe she was trying out new material...who knows. It's one person's perception...she does stand up ALL the time in NYC - pretty much every day over the past several weeks - and if this was a such a big issue it would've come out already.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I seem to recall her having some sort of bi-polar diagnosis or something like that, circa early 2000's. After Truth about Cats & Dogs, for sure. I thought she went the comedy route because that was short enough stints where she could be medicated as needed and not hold up production when she was mood swinging. It's a lot easier to reschedule a comedy routine than a whole movie shoot, I think they were thinking....LOVE her though. She was totally who I wanted to be like when I was in my early 20's. She rocked it in the early 90's!!

  35. Funny thing, Dennis Miller was a big early supporter of Janeane's career. Dennis saw her do stand up and liked her so much her cast her in The Dennis Miller Show, where from there she got cast in The Ben Stiller Show and from there Larry Sanders. Janeane was also offered Courtney Cox's role on Friends but she turned it down because her movie career was starting to take off.

And maybe, just maybe, it's also used by socially liberal folks who would even refer to themselves as "lefty" and who both work at a college AND are finishing up a master's degree. Go figure.

Those of us who mentioned that she is liberal were only letting Me know that her politics are left, not right.

  50. Favourite movie of all time - The Matchmaker. I watch it a few times a year, usually when sick.

Janeane's sarcastic humour at it's best, David O'Hara at his hottest and the most lovely Irish scenery...oh and Dennis Leary being a jerk.

  53. Love JG! I wish she'd stuck to her guns on not ever getting really skinny, but I realize HWood is cruel that way. I think she had a nose job too. And I could totally do without the ink.

She was on "Real Time With BM" within the past couple of years. I could've sworn she was strung out on something. She kept itching her arms a little erractically. Hope she's okay. Hope if she has mental health or drug issues she can get them licked.

She always been a bit disjointed and jangled, that's her thing. It's like Jerry Seinfeld's " Don't you hate it when???" jokes. She is mentally unstable seeming, certainly. That's part of her geek charm.

  59. The person offended by "lefty" probably throws around "right wing nutjob" freely to talk about conservatives like me.

I feel about JG like what many "lefties" feel about Sarah Palin. So of course this post got political, just like every gossip post about Bristol or another conservative.

  62. I'm a lefty, in terms of politics, and have said the term lefty here and there. Just like conservatives lean to the right, it's not an insult. I'm also a Northerner (MI!), and am pretty sure my parents aren't related!

I couldn't picture her as Monica on Friends. I found Monica shrill and obnoxious. I couldn't picture Garafalo as the type A, hyperactive Monica.

    ReplyDelete
  63. @Brakewater, I know, right? Too bad I have my teeth and everything - even a law degree.

@False Profit, I'm not sure why so-called liberal persons like yourself seem to think it is appropriate to clump all of the "right" into one homogeneous group. I don't think you'd like it very much if I suggested there were no gradations within your party. I'm glad that I am so easily labeled because of the way that I vote, but last time I checked, I also had other characteristics that define me, other than inbred idiot. I'm a woman, I'm a lawyer, I'm a wife, I'm an animal lover, and so on and so forth. Your quickness to stereotype displays such ignorance that I'm not sure why I'm even justifying it with a response, but you've pissed me off, so there it is.

As for JG, I like her and I hope she is doing ok.

no one remembers when she said, "I bet they've never even heard of yo la tengo!" This was in regards to Bush voters. Now I never voted for a Bush (nor an Obama -Gary Johnson woo hoo!! again, I digress), but even then, I found that remark to be extremely juvenile, ESPECially coming from what, she must have been 40 something even then.

  74. I found her pretty one-note when she was big enough that she was getting a fair shot in movies -and I do think she had a lot of great opportunities that were pretty good but not "hits." She always seemed moody & grouchy & selective about whom she would be nice to. Actually, she seems a heck of a lot like Ben Stiller.

  78. I think this is a case of showbiz chewing someone up and spitting her out. For a while there she was the comedy It Girl, kind of like Tina Fey without the power, and then...nothing. It must have been awful.

I knew something was up with her when she went blond and became super-skinny. And then she showed up on Two and a Half Men and I knew it was all over for her. Too bad, because she used to be really funny and seemed sharp and observant. Hope she take time off to rest and revitalize herself.

  79. I saw her in concert once (post-Reality Bites, pre-political rants), and she worked off the cuff from a legal pad full of notes. I can see how that might not work out and come off "disjointed" sometimes.

  81. I've seen her twice - once pretty soon after 9/11 and then a couple years ago. She was a little off her game at the later one, but the one after 9/11 was like listening to someone in therapy. There were no jokes really, just rambling about being fat and having to have her costumes all remade in some movie and then of course 9/11 because her apartment was right there. The first time I chalked it up to some PTSD-type stuff, maybe it was too soon for her to be performing, but the other one made me think she's better when she's not in front of people. Radio, writing, movies - def a lot funnier

    ReplyDelete
  82. I saw her last summer at the UP Comedy Club in Chicago and thought she killed it. She didn't really get political, at all, not that I care, but I don't understand why people can't separate the art from the artist. I would never want anything bad to happen to someone b/c I didn't agree with their political views. I hope she is ok. :(
