Comments

In case you don't post a comment, and only read the comments, you might not have seen the message that all people posting comments will start seeing today. I wanted to share it with you too.

In the next week, I will be deciding whether to go to a system which will involve the approval of all comments prior to being posted. I do not want to have to resort to this option, but will, and hopefully would only have to do so for a short time before returning to the system that exists now.

Many sites do not allow any comments at all, and that would be a much easier option, but I love and value the comments and won't ever resort to that. If the problem does not resolve itself, then I will just review all the comments before they are posted so that this can continue to be the vibrant community it has always been.

Peace and Bacon,

Enty

Peace and Bacon! Love it. Lame that it's come to this, but whatever we have to do to troll-proof sounds worth it.

  12. Sorry you would have to do that--I've been through this on some message boards I used to post on and it kind of ruins the flow of conversation.
It's sad that you created a nice little community and people need to try intentionally to hurt it. Do what you need to do to clean things up Enty--sorry it will be extra work for you.

  15. Are the trolls sleeping in from their long day yesterday? I thought this thread would be chock full of porn and insults. Or did the bridge collapse on their teeny tiny heads?

Ditto Tracy! I'm not currently working either! Glad to help, patrol, police, monitor whatever. That was sooooo was weird, and a tiny bit interesting like a car wreck but I wouldn't want to look at it all day. Funny though as I have been reading this site for YEARS I only realized yesterday how much the comments were such an important part to the experience. Once I read enty's comment (above) yesterday (at the bottom) I found myself going..."nooooo...I don't want ANY comments to disappear" so I was like to myself "wooow...they really do mean that much to me". I would be soooo upset if things were to change. Thanks again Enty! I do love your site and you!!!!

  25. thank goodness - i read some of the comments yesterday and got a headache.. no point even replying to the person/people who were taking over with all sorts of rubbish talk.
Let's hope it does not have to come to this as I too agree it would detract a bit from the conversation rhythm... but better a little delay than the mental people posting yesterday. thank you!!

  26. Censorship is a slippery slope, people. Who decides what is appropriate or acceptable? I loathe racist and bigoted speech but is it up to *us* to censor? It's up to *us* to let the offenders know it's not acceptable, but censorship?

    Slippery slope...

    1. @Meanie- this is not "our" blog. It is Enty's blog and can can choose what comments are posted.

That said, it will be interesting to see what types of comments are approved...from there we can get a sense of what hasn't been approved.

Thanks, Enty, for dong this. At first it was entertaining, but it got tedious very quickly. Hopefully you won't have to monitor for very long.

    2. I agree in general, but a blog, like a business for example, is private property, so our freedom of speech doesn't apply. It's like the mall enforcing a no bare feet rule.
I have avoided posting much for ages because of all this idiocy (so, they did one good thing for the rest of you!). In effect trolling stifles free speech when it drives people away.
      Just my 2 cents.
I'm sorry this is creating work for Enty.

    3. It's worth it if it keeps the threads from degenerating into what they were yesterday. Enty isn't going to block people if he/she doesn't like what's being said, but I could have done without a lot of the stupid crap that was up yesterday & those could easily be picked out and left out.

  31. Imo, and as a long time participant in message boards, you've just gotta let this shit play itself out. Just like the AtoA, betch, et. al. shit, eventually the perpetrators doing it get bored and move on and there is parity one again.

Once you start moderating, where do you draw the line? At the trolling? At the ass to ass (which honestly annoys probably 90%of us now)? The ganging up on people? Eventually a community of people (even a loose knit one) will self moderate...usually by ignoring.

But whatever. I actually found yesterday's fuckery somewhat entertaining. I wouldn't want to read it everyday but then again I don't want to read "ass to ass" everyday either.

    1. Agreed! The A2A, betcha, etc is just as annoying as the trolls! Its a small group of "good people" but they themselves take over just as much as the trolls.

    2. Agreed Lola!

Yesterday I went from being confused, to uncomfortable, to terrified, to intrigued, and then I stopped at so so entertained! Seriously that shit was crazy but in it's craziness it kind of made sense, and I love that so many commenters came in and said that hey, these guys kind of have a point.

I haven't been around for very long but I've grown to feel safe within this community. I seldom comment on anything on the Internet other than here; it feels kind of pointless at times, but at CDAN there's a really good chance you're going to have nice conversations. So after hanging here for 8 months I felt the urge to be a part of CDAN - but as many other lurkers/newbies, I understand the criticism directed at the atmosphere of our comment section. As big of a troll the person/s was yesterday, there were still some valid points embedded in all the fuckery.

Now I'm not pointing any fingers; I like both Libby and Anna, who were 2 of the regulars that were attacked. And even though I personally have no problem with the inside jokes or the vulgarity, I understand why some would feel excluded and offended. Inside jokes are by their very nature alienating, so of course people are going to react when there's constant mentions of ass2ass - I mean, even I who understood the Requiem of a Dream-reference when someone first used the term ass2ass stopped finding it funny after a while. lBut I'm a live and let live kinda gal, you know?

I think the lesson here is tolerance; as someone else said yesterday, just because some have been here longer than others, it doesn't make it "their" board - and if you're new, recognize that there's going to be inside jokes and some click-y behaviour and you won't like everything people say and do around here. We ARE going to disagree and trolls will come and go but really, who the hell cares?

Chill, people. Those who are here are mostly very intelligent and kind, there is no need to turn on each other or be territorial. It's the Internet! Doesn't it belong to all of us?

      Delete
  32. Totally on board. As he says, this can just be temporary to get rid of the asshat(s). Yesterday was a flustercuck.

  33. I agree with what Meanie Reese said about censorship. I don't know if this is feasible, but what about having commenters having to register with their real names & addresses (like a dating site) but of course keep all the information private. You'd register once and be approved and THEN you'd be able to comment to your heart's content and if you run amuck (like some yesterday) approval is rescinded.

I'm not going to lie I laughed my ass of at first, but it got old quickly! I stopped reading most of comments. While yesterday was ludicrous, I'm wondering if all the troll-baiting has caught up to some of the posters.

    1. @Pink - you mean did all the dumb ass2ass jokes bring this on? I was kinda wondering that myself.

      Delete
    2. @ Nope I wasn't here for the origin of the dumb jokes so I'm not sure where that was headed or what its purpose fulfilled. I meant other more obvious troll-baiting; insulting a particular actor randomly so their super-fan would come and defend them or insulting the point of view of certain posters so they would get riled up, stuff like that.

    3. Yesterday was ridiculous but it started a few days before that even. I don't have a problem with approving the post. We do that at work. In the PR world it's actually OK for negative comments to post but lately many of the comments wouldn't have gone through. The ass to ass stuff is typical CDAN community and culture. The other stuff, well...

  46. I used to really enjoy commenting and the comments over on the AV Club site. Even though they were often filled with outrageous, crazy shit they were often funny as hell. That site went to a dedicated, registered user-model of comments and was never quite the same. A lot of major sites are now just eliminating comments altogether. So, Enty, I suggest you choose between total freedom or get rid of them completely. You'll drive yourself crazy trying to edit comments.

  71. I was late to the party...work keeps interupting my CDAN time. Yesterday was a bit chaotic, but not totally unexpected. There have been signs of discontent voiced through out the comments lately about certain posters and the cliques that seemed to dominate the comments. By the time I got home a number of comments had been deleted--I will hasten a guess that those were most likely ones I didn't want to read anyway.

  74. Ok - I rarely come to the site anymore, and there was a time (a *long* time, i.e. years) I couldn't go a day without coming on here. I've made some really good virtual friendships thanks to Ent, and what this community was. Remember there was a time when we could reveal personal information about what was happening in our lives (our real lives), and find compassion, sympathy, and the realisation that we weren't alone in our experiences? That was a long time ago, now. I came on here for good laughs and camaraderie; now all I see are +1's (which is the adult equivalent of "first"), juvenile snivelling, and constant attacks on Ent. Flame all you like - this is my opinion, so no amount of sniping will convince me otherwise - it will just bolster it. Ent, I hope we can all get the comments back on track to great laughs and good times!

    ReplyDelete
  82. I'm not tech savvy, but isn't there a way to ban an IP? The nonsense yesterday was likely just one or two persons. Perhaps Enty can ask for a couple of long time commenters to act as moderators?

I know you can double click to hide a post, but it would be nice if there were an "ignore" or "hide" feature that worked by username.

    ReplyDelete

    1. @mad, I don't think you can ban an ip on blogger...I'm not even positive you have access to ips like you do on a traditional message board

  83. So that is what it takes to get censorship? What about all the countless times other posters were singled out and put down? And please do t use the excuse that it just came to your attention. We all know that someone monitors the comments.

And who will do the censoring now? What if that person doesn't like certain posters or their comments?

All of this is juvenile bullshit. If I wanted to see the unpopular kids or the "newbies" get picked on I would go hang out in the highschool parking lot.

It really doesn't matter to me anymore because this will be my last visit to this site. To those of you I have became friends with, you guys know how to get in touch with me.

  87. And yet nobody wonders that if Enty is actually an entertainment attorney how does he/she have time to moderate the comments for approval.

If you just let to go for a few days then the novelty wears off for the trolls and they move on.

And for the person that suggested everyone be required to register with full names, addresses and numbers, just out of curiosity how many times have you been scammed and had your bank account hacked? Just giving up personal info to a stranger on an unsecured site isn't a smart decision.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Profane threatened to reveal our personal info, 888 regularly confuses the site for a Klan meeting, only now something is going to be done? People here are harassed daily by others, and nothing is ever done. I find this to be a day late, and a dollar short.

I don't read as often, and I don't comment as often. I don't mind the ass2ass comments, I actually find them funny. It is the people being nasty to others, just because they can, that has me fed up. I am pretty much done with CDaN.

I do agree that you have to be careful with moderation. I understand the need to tamp down the abusive trolls. I just hope it doesn't turn into a way to eliminate healthy debate. Not everyone has the same opinion, and it's nice when that can be expressed without fear of being attacked by one of the cliques or being deleted without cause.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Enty, just a thought.. if there's a way for you to do it, it would be a lot less time consuming just to block the IP numbers of those few who only come around to disrupt things.

It then becomes friendly again. Lather, rinse, repeat. BUT, this thing yesterday was beyond. I don't blame Ent.

You know what? Enty should do nothing. I elect we scroll past and/or simply ignore. Filtering out all the shit in our daily lives is a good skill to learn, anyway.

  105. This and Radar are the only ones I read. I rarely look at the comments because of this problem. I become too engaged and before you know it, half the day is gone.

See, now I want to know what happened yesterday! Dammit!

Can someone quickly tell me so I don't have to search around? (and they are probably deleted now anyway)

    Thank you!

    1. @Crystal...the radar "Brandy" comments are the best! If I was going to ever troll a comment section, it would totally be a Brandy post on Radar. All you'd have to do is go in and say, "LeAnn rocks!" and watch the shitstorm ensue.

  106. Why not just add a few moderators? Five or so would do it, and they could delete troll posts almost immediately. It'd be shit-work for a few days, but it'd improve quickly enough.

From what I've seen of the way he operates, there's no way Enty self-moderates this place. He's not around often enough, and that'd mean a huge delay, and then bigger backlog of posts waiting to clear.

Enty, it's yours, do whatever you think you have to do.

  110. I am just... horrifically confused. I don't participate in the comment-sphere enough to understand what's really going on. Heck, I don't even *read* the comments that frequently. I tried to read some of them yesterday when all of this f*ckery was going on, but it just hurt my brain. :(

    ReplyDelete
  111. Thanks for the heads up. Yesterday was nuts and as has already been noted, well coordinated & most likely pre-planned.

Have to say I'm a bit surprised it didn't happen sooner; totally open blogs are a rarity nowadays b/c they are sitting targets for just about anyone, agenda or not. I agree with the solution of temporary moderation until sh*t settles, hopefully then to return to the unmoderated version that's worked for so long. I wouldn't advertise if/when this happens, just do what needs to be done for as long as needed and return to moderation only when necessary....I'm sure the blow-owner/s don't have the time for the hassle, but yesterday was disruptive and nuts.

For those that dislike moderation and the potential for censorship it introduces, I agree w/you, but recall that posting here is a privilege not a right. It's not our forum and its up to the blog owner/s to decide how to manage it....happy posting everyone:)

  113. thank GOD. this site's been unreadable. it's become a dirty message board full of 14 year olds and wading through that bullshit for posts relevant to the BI's is tiresome.

  114. I hope it's not necessary. How long can one person keep up their hate campaign?

Maybe the dodo will move on when he or she figures out that all of Perez Hilton's entries are not written by him, or that he tries to make money off his site...or *gasp*...his name isn't even Perez Hilton!!!! What a liar! Con artist! And a few people out of the thousands that read him might not know that! They must be told! Over and over! And they must CARE!!!!

What a world, what a world!

  116. @Phoenix banning IPs is possible on some blogs esp those with more complex individualized software but I'm not sure it works with Blogger. Hate to agree with @canopener but with the availability of vpns/rotating IPs a determined troll/s would just work around it.

I agree w/@Layna and @madlyb about the scroll-by method, this is how I've always read CDAN over the years (skim/scroll over what you don't like and ignore it, respond to what you want to - kind of like a buffet) but yesterday's disruption requires a harder response. Short of shutting down the board moderation is a better temp solution.

  117. I rarely comment but I read this blog almost religiously. I do notice the clique and may find some of the jokes not so funny, but hey, to each his own. Racism, bigotry, misoginy: it pains me to read through them but I don't have the energy to argue with them nor do I think this is the proper forum.

Enty, I don't mind you moderating the comments because this is still your blog. You do have the right to do so. I just hope you don't take too much time approving the comments because I suck at guessing and rely on others' guesses.

  124. After reading through yesterday it seemed like a planned attack because they haven't been back except for canopener who is clearly unhinged.
What I got from yesterday (Tweet thread) was that a lot of people blamed Mooski, Jax, Lutefisk, The Black Cat, Rickatoo and someone named Affleck. Which is interesting because none of those people showed up yesterday. Also according to the Affleck comments doesn't that mean that Ben Affleck further up the thread is Lutefisk and they are bringing back the same hatred and trying not to be noticed? Very interesting.
Bye Enty you've lost another reader.

We've never heard from Affleck before but they seem pretty dogmatic in their quest to play keep away ftom posters THEY don't approve of. I'm all for playing nicely with everyone until it moves to something hateful. I hope that's the criteria. Maybe clearly defined rules beforehand can put us at ease?

  138. @whocaresnow - I understand your concern, but if I was safe on Match.com (who had ALL my info, including credit card #) frankly, screening who gets to post without moderation is not a big deal to me if all he gets is my name and address (or Facebook page) as long as the information is kept private.

And to all those who think censorship would not be a problem - some of the most meaningful conversations I've seen here have been about politics, abortion and personal problems. What if there is a monitor who is prolife and deletes all prochoice comments? Or a liberal who deletes all conservative comments? Those two examples are examples of censorship. If you only want to chat with like minded individuals, this isn't the place for you. I've seen lots of comments that bored and/or annoyed me - I just move on. It's only when (like this past week) these comments become the majority of comments that also threaten and harass others that I say something. Just remember - censorship depends on who is doing the censoring.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Dear Bacon, I mean Enty. I don't always read the comments for every post, but I do regularly and randomly read the posts, and occasionally post a comment, even though I never remember my posting name and have to change it. I settled on Bessie Smith, and have even messed that up. Forgot the capitals, etc. Will see... may have to invent another name.

But I always felt safe to read. I am not interested in reading a porn site. I'm not. That is for somewhere else. I am not interested in reading a site where someone is attacked for whatever reason. I really thought in the past when you asked for comments, that we could all contribute, knowing that with the wide variety of readers, you would get many differing opinions, and we could all live with that, respect it, and accommodate differing views. I just was amazed yesterday, and unhappy because I was coming to the conclusion that I would have to quit reading this site. I don't mind telling you Enty, that you have gotten me through some rough times. Every site evolves, but it doesn't devolve. I don't mind if you screen. After what I read yesterday, it needs to happen. It's like a virus attacked the site. Just please don't cut someone out if they sign in under a different name. I'm really quite bright, I just keep forgetting my sign in name. :) or flubbing it up.

I was going to email you when I read the sign in name of one person, asking something obscene. I'm really not interested in reading that on your site. Please clean this up.

Did I ever tell you that one could wrap a tennis shoe in bacon and I would eat it? Have you ever had bacon and chocolate? Chocolate covered bacon? Yum.

  140. I disagree with the answer to yesterday's issue being prior approval, and I will explain right now:

Yesterday's problem was not "trolling" but "flooding". If some idiot says anything like "first", "X commenter is a colossal douche", "Y politician is a criminal" or whatever, he/she/it is only some virtual being and we should ignore it. Yesterday there were dozens of inane messages and it was what annoyed me and probably most of the commenters.

This blog comments are great, in a great part, because of their immediacy/flow, and if we have to wait until the messages are posted, it won't be worthwhile to read them. There are a lot of webs that write this page's BIs and main suspects. If the comments aren't worthwhile reading, it would save us a lot of time, but you would lose a lot of clicks.

If you start censoring messages, you can finish up censoring the typical but often hilarious "Betty White" answer to a BI involving a nymphomaniac drug fiend or posts about our dislike for some actor/celebrity unless it's Kinky Kim.

Some solution could be the above said of IP ban, but there are a lot of ways someone could go through it (yesterday's trolls weren't exactly professionals, I could have done a lot more harm that they did with less effort if I had wanted).
Another answer could be obliging (does this word exist?) to wait for five minutes between messages in the same board. This would disencourage "flooders" and I know there are a lot of things you can do to avoid it, I don't think yesterday's kids know it.

    ReplyDelete

  143. After reading some of what people have said here, it seems like there is still a misconception - maybe I'm wrong but it's bothering me.

Some people have said that the "trolling" started before yesterday. Do you mean the extra comments by the Count, me, and some of the others "newbies" who might've been raunchier than most people's taste? See, I like Counts humor - he kinda reminds me of someone I know. Hence why I started playing along with him - and I've tried to play along with the "regulars" too, but they are too cliquey. They usually ignore everyone else except each other, unless they're telling people to get over the ass2ass jokes and go find somewhere else to "play". I've watched them too it for close to two years - that's how long I've lurked before commenting.
So, yesterday was bound to happen - I think it was both to piss of the regulars by pointing out the hypocrisy - which is RAMPANT here - in the most annoying way possible and stick it to enty because they have an ax to grind. Personally, I found it hilarious, and there's a comment in blind item #5 that 8513something wrote that lays it out better than I can. I suggest people go read it, and maybe it'll help the regulars understand how MOST of us feel about the situation and the community here.

Finally - and please, correct me if I'm wrong - since there seems to be a private, invite-only forum, why are the regulars even complaining about what goes on here? Seems like they already have a place to go play that is closed-off from the people they don't want anyway? Why can't they go there to have the cliquey community they want, and leave the PUBLIC blog open to the public?

Sorry if this is too long to read - it's probably going to get buried or ignored anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  144. YoMismo---I would email Enty directly, seriously. The man needs tips, and you seem to know this stuff.

I don't care for half of the comments here, but why would I expect to? It was the harassment of others that was out-of-bounds. Yes, and the flooding!

  147. All the OT comments and the direction a lot of it was going has caused me to spend less time here than I used to; I really only want to see the guesses for the blinds so that became the only comment lists I would look at. Once things started to get so far OT, or less kind, I realized that if the way it is now, was that way it was when I first started coming here, I wouldn't have come back.

So I'm all for it, Enty.

It's a matter of being oneself, being independent, and not being too mean to each other here. It's not hard. I've 'survived' because i stay honest, for better or worse. It's worked so far.
Also. This is a pretty damn nice blog. If anyone thinks this is intimidating, they've never seen a political site.

I'm an old-timer, and I don't know anything about an invite-only forum. I think there is an OLD one (not invite-only, just link is lost) that some old-timers must've cared enough to bookmark, way back. (I didn't.) The recent one Enty created is not used. IDKW.

  150. I don't care about people posting off topic. There is only so much one can say about a blind reveal, or on a post about Lindsay Lohan or one of the K family without it getting redundant and boring. So have at it. What I find offensive is that there are people on this site that banter about the word troll frequently and make a poster feel uncomfortable and unwelcome simply for having a view point that may differ from the current 'in' crowd.
That being said, I have noticed an absence from several posters lately--Dia, Sunny, Rocket Queen, and Brenda L who have been long time regulars.
