Miles Ambridge might not get to be next to his classmates in the class photo but he gets to be at the top of the photos today here.

I cannot stand the way children with disabilites are treated in schools. Cannot stand it. As an Aspie, the separation from my peers when I was younger has never left. What will his memory be when he looks back on his school pics? I hope its a positive one.

ReplyDeleteThis boy's mother has been in the paper twice talking about this. The photo has been retaken. What else does she want? Is she going to raise a stink like this for the rest of her son's life, whenever she decides he's been wronged? To be fair, I do think she figures she is acting in his best interest, but the truth is he is going to be embarrassed by her if she keeps this up.
I have a heart condition and I always wished people would just treat me like I was normal, but so many adults coddled me and acted like I needed help all the time. It sucked.

If u look closely, the way the pic set up, thats as close as he can get brcause of bleacher seats. Now i wld hv put him in the middle, and surrond him with kids, that wld hv been way to go.

ReplyDeleteWell jeez, Krissie, maybe if you didn't keep repeating yourself people wouldn't treat you differently! (LOL, kidding, my browser does it to me too sometimes!). I see only one person at fault here, and that's whoever was responsible for positioning the kids for the pic, probably a professional photographer. Unless this was his first time taking school pics (which I doubt), then this can't be his first time with a kid in a wheelchair.
ReplyDeleteThis teacher should have known better. She is an advocate for her students and should have noticed that her most vulnerable one was completely left out. The photographer should be fired. there is no way he didnt notice how obviously left out this boy was. they could have easily spread the kids out in the bottom row and put him in the middle. If that was my son I would be PISSED!

Oh my word. That school picture does not tell the story of how that boy is treated in his classroom. That is one moment in time, arranged and captured by a photographer who shows up one day a year to take class pictures. Now, I have no idea what his mother's complaints are, or if they are valid. But I do know if the world judged my class last year by our class picture, someone would be doing a fundraiser for us by now - everyone looked pathetic. And I had the most awesome, well-loved students in the galaxy last year. Not that I'm biased or anything :-).

DeleteIf you look at the picture you can see where the chair is pushed as closely to the bleachers as possible. They should have positioned the teacher to the right so the would look cohesive but it was probably that all the class pictures had the teachers on the left (looking at the picture).

ReplyDeleteI saw the ad for the new Brad Pitt film - beats me what it's called since I am no movie buff - but all I could focus on was his hair. And he totally looks greasy.
Eva L looks gorgeous, and I am intrigued by the Maids show. I wonder why it didn't get picked up by ABC. I may check it out though. I think it's on Lifetime, right?

It looks like the photographer's biggest concern was making everything balanced, but it looks like all he had to do was either put the teacher on the other side, or put the kids all the way over to the right of the bleachers.

@Sherry--this was a front page story in Vancouver where this happened. So it is a real story that happened with in the past week. My heart would have been saddened too...as it does look like he is segregated from the rest of his class.

Miles is precious. It stinks he was so far from his classmates, but he looks as happy as a clam in the pic. I worked in special ed for several years. At times the way the children were treated (mainly by the general education teachers) was despicable, but for the most part, the other students were very kind and helpful with my students and went out of their way to include them. That always made me burst with joy and of course get watery eyed. Love, love, love all my former special ed babies. Yes, some are in high school now, but they will always be my babies.

But what people don't realize is that I have about the most awesome job around. I get back so much more than I give. It's truly a blessing - and I NEVER say that about anything!
ReplyDeleteWWZ is going to bomb because it's zombies with no blood. A zombie movie where you don't see one zombie eating someone? Why make a zombie movie at all? All so the movie could get a PG-13 rating. A movie reviewer said the zombies were kind of like the scenery running.
ReplyDeleteI was at a charity luncheon a few months ago. Susan Lucci was there as a guest. She mingled with the crowd and walked around just like anyone else there. No airs, no special treatment at all. In person she does not look so pulled back. She is beyond tiny. Very elegant, though. I tried getting a photo of her but I would have had to follow her into the restroom, so I turned around.

Frankly, Miles' mom sounds like an obnoxious helicopter parent. The matter was handled as soon as the photo was retaken and the photographer re-educated.

Clearly she had work done, but I give her an enormous amount of credit for showing up and there was absolutely no announcement that she was attending a Diabetes Research Foundation charity event. She was recognized by everyone, but you would never have known she was someone famous.
