Woman Killed After D.C. Police Chase Had Post-Partum Depression

34 year old Miriam Carey was killed in Washington DC yesterday after trying to drive her car through a barrier at the White House. Miriam was driving with her one year old girl in the back seat. According to friends and relatives of Miriam she didn't have a violent bone in her body and had never been in trouble with the police but had been diagnosed with post-partum depression.

Miriam's mother thought Miriam was taking her daughter to a doctor's appointment and had no idea why her daughter would have driven from Connecticut down to Washington DC.

Her mother went on to say that Miriam got sick a few months after the birth and was even hospitalized because of her depression. Miriam was a dental hygienist who had taken the day off work.

    1. She rammed police with her car........... There's a reason cars can be classified as a weapon.

  4. Just terrible. Did the baby survive? This is too heavy....

  5. I read that she believed Obama was stalking her. Perhaps that was her reasoning? It doesn't justify anything though.

  6. Baby is OK. Don't know why they shot her.

    Depression is a mo-fo.

  7. She also thought she was being stalked by Obama. That isn't post-partum depression. Don't undermine that condition or make women who truly suffer from it appear to be crazy.

    2. It could be post-party psychosis which is different than depression.

My cousin had severe post partum depression, she imagined things. It's a mental illness and it's on a spectrum. There's no shame in it

  8. Deb, saw a news show where that question was asked. Police were forced into it because she just wouldnt stop. 3 or 4 times they thought they had her contained and she rode thru barriers, ran over cops, they saw baby in car and had to stop her. Someone like this, cops dont know what she has in car-or mb its a car bomb.

  9. God rest her soul. Post partum depression is a very real condition and my heart breaks for her family, and that baby girl who will never know her mama.

I do understand why the cops did it, but it is beyond sad.

  10. Ms Cool - Her mother is quoted in a few articles saying that her daughter suffered from post partum depression.

  11. Susan, Thanks. I had read that. I am saying that PPD causes depression, not delusions,

    1. She was taking meds for schizophrenia . Cops found it in her home. Im sure that is what was causing her delusions-the illness.

Eros : that would make more sense. Post natal depression and schizophrenia. Really sad.

  12. Apparently the cops aren't even getting paid due to the shutdown. Some deal has to be made before they start getting a paycheck.

  13. This is bad but there is a story here eveyone missed. The cops that shot her are working wihout pay. That is illegal in govt. This should play a big part in law suits. All those who fired shots should have been AT HOME. When govt can't play by their own rules we have a problem. Some manager can't just wave a wand and say laws don't apply here. Big problem.

  16. I am wondering if she had post partum psychosis rather then depression. It's a very sad story. I am sorry the cops had to use deadly force on her but they really had no choice. I am glad the baby is okay. It's downright crime that those officers are out there risking their lives to keep other people safe with no pay. I am disgusted with our government.

  19. If this doesn't lead to a complete ban on women driving, then we at least need to put restrictions in place where they can't drive during Shark Week or if they have post partum depression. The waiting period during licensing is not enough. We need background checks and mental health checks every time a woman purchases a car. If we can't get that through then we should tax the hell out of gasoline, so they can't afford to make a car operational.

What kind of car did this woman use? Can we have a politician in need of grandstanding step forward w/ a proposal to ban them from the market place?

And don't give me the "cars don't kill people, people kill people" crap. If this woman didn't have a car, her child would still have a mother. If Susan Smith didn't have a car, her children would be alive today.

Thank god driving is a privilege and not a right, so all you Right Wing Pro Auto nuts don't have an Amendment to fall back on.

    :P

    FALSE.
If the cops were part of the Washington DC Police Dept, they are paid by the city (shutdown only affects federal workers) and if they were part of the White House Police Force, they are part of the military or the so called "essential services" because they "provide for the national security" in the name of the President, Senate and that (http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2013/09/30/absolutely-everything-you-need-to-know-about-how-the-government-shutdown-will-work/) (not sure what group they are in), therefore they are paid anyway.

  24. On the real, post-partum happens! I truly feel sorry for her and her child. I hope the baby grows up healthy and happy and doesn't take her mothers death on her shoulders.

If I ever got pregnant, I would definitely eat the placenta. I would also hope nothing terrible happens with the dad or pregnancy that would aid in bringing the illness on.

Man, this story is an absolute downer.

    ReplyDelete
  25. @Orvila: WTF? Eat the placenta? Is that supposed to be a vaccine for post partum?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Orvilla: a very good friend of mine did that, she said it helped soo sooo much. And you don't eat it raw, it gets freezedried and put into capsules

  28. @Liddy: And SUVs! We need to ban all forms of SUVs. No one needs a vehicle that gets 6 MPG, unless you are in the trucking industry and have a CDL. The only vehicles a woman should own are a hatchback and maybe a minivan, if they can prove a need for one.

How much more senseless death will Congress turn a blind eye to before they take action!

  29. I have a sis who has mental problems. including but not limited to paranoia. When she gave birth 4 yrs, she was depressed the entire pregnancy and the in the last trimester, the depression completely took control of her. She tried to kill herself (and the unborn baby) 2x. After she gave birth, it took a li time for her to get better. Now she so attached to her lil one.

  30. Agree this is just sad all around but I understand that the police had no way of knowing what they were dealing with.

I'm glad that the child was at least physically unharmed.

  33. Recently, we had a murder/suicide in our city. A young mother drowned her two children, an infant and toddler in the tub. The mother went missing, her body was later found floating in the river near her home. She was diagnosed with a postpartum illness shortly after the birth of her infant son. In Toronto a few years ago a mother with her infant in her arms jumped in front of subway train. Sadly, there is a deep stigma attached to mental illnesses, many mother do not get the help they or their families need, especially in terms of postpartum depression or psychosis. Simply tragic.

  34. The Anna Paquin YouTube series about post partum is a worthwhile watch if you never dealt with anyone going through it.

    ReplyDelete
  35. They didn't have to shoot her and kill her. There ARE other ways to deal with the situation. Why are they always so quick to shoot people? Her baby was in the car, too. They're lucky they didn't kill the baby, too!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Will everyone please at least attempt to touch on reality when thinking about the situation?

You have a person in a car who tried to bulldoze their way into the White House, then took police on a high speed chase when the attempt failed. Authorities didn't know if it was a terrorist, a wack job, part of a coordinated attack, or a random idiot. They didn't know if the car was rigged to blow or if there were weapons inside. What they did know is the car and the driver both needed to stop moving for the situation to end.

The officer who air holed her should get a reward equal to half what the potential costs of a trial would have been, with the othrt half going to the child for therapy and college.

It is ree gaddam diculous to try monday morning quarterbacking the situation and say they didn't have to shoot her. And it is absolute BS to say that without offering an alternative. The only real alternative to shooting her was a drone strike to blow up the car.

  46. I live in DC and am familiar with the area in which she was driving like a maniac. How she did that, I'll never know. She was like friggin' NASCAR on steroids. For all of you idiots who said the cops didn't have to kill her, what would you have said if she had run over a group of school children on a field trip? She tried to ram into the White House and then drove over to the Capitol. These two places are not that close to each other. She was driving close to 90 MPH in a city that just two weeks prior had been shot up by another looney toon.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Just sad, no matter how you view it. A real shame that her meds and treatment didn't work enough to save her from going off the rails. She looks like a real joy to know, like a fun, nice person.

Count - I propose no cars be built that are larger than a 1987 Yugo. If you try to run someone down, it just tickles.
