Blind Item #4
Most affairs just end marriages. Some like Meg Ryan's end careers. This affair has the potential to end two careers and one of them is not even involved in the affair but the two work so closely together that no one would be able to figure out which one they were not trying to hire. Apparently the affair is red hot.
This is so vague. Where are the clues?

ReplyDeleteI don't know anyone who isn't a gossip hound who even knew she had an affair, and I don't see how a moral issue beyond child porn or racism, etc could derail anyone in this day and age.

ReplyDeleteMeg Ryan had an affair with Russell Crowe while shooting The Patriot. Apparently, Dennis Quaid had been unfaithful from day one, but he did that on the down low, while Ryan took the blame from the tabloids.
Then, it's sad to say but it was at the same time she was turning 40, which means she didn't get leading parts in studios films. She tried plastic surgery, and hers was botched, she tried edgy indie drama, starring in Jane Campion's In The Cut, and it clashed with her "sweetheart" image.
@Angela - the affair between Meg and Russell Crowe was when they filmed "Proof of Life." Isn't "The Patriot" a Mel Gibson flick?

ReplyDeleteMeg was America's Sweetheart, and yeah her affair was huge at the time. I think the plastic surgery came after, which was the nail in the coffin. So yes, I think her affair had a big part to play, I wasn't into gossip at the time and this was major newspaper headline stuff. It sucks for her.
ReplyDeletethe crowe thing absolutely ended her career. the surgery was after and didn't help, but there was a big backlash against meg for the affair. sad because dennis was never faithful. however, when you're 'america's sweetheart', you apparently better not fuck around on your hubby.

ReplyDeleteAbsolutely there was a huge backlash over the affair at the time, rightly or wrongly. It wasn't necessarily the affair, more that the affair led to the absolute crushing of the whole sweet public persona that she had built for years and years. So the usual roles that called for a "Meg Ryan type" just evaporated.

ReplyDeleteWhen you're "America's Sweetheart" and get caught making out with Russell Crowe -- the hottest actor on the planet at the time -- on a commercial flight, don't expect sympathy from the masses. Especially when there are pics and you've got a minor at home. Studios don't care who you fuck, as long as you're lucrative. But Proof of Life did poorly at the box office, followed by Kate & Leopold, and followed by a string of other terrible films.
ReplyDeleteWas it just the affair that did her in? No. There was the bad surgery, her age and poor script choices in the years immediately after. But the affair scared away the audience, and that's always the beginning of the end.
Meg's clownface ended her career.
ReplyDeleteI'd also like to add that she wasn't a very nice person to those around her so it was a winning combination of things that did her in. Screwing with her pretty face sealed the deal.
ReplyDeleteI agree, she made her image on being the good girl next door and it bit her back. Then she likely panicked as the roles started to dry up, got plastic surgery and that sealed the deal.
ReplyDeleteIs it just research or luck that so many other actresses get tweaked all the time and look fine. I'm talking about Meryl and Mirren for starters. I think Mirren doesn't touch her eyes or if she does it is sublte. She still has some wrinkles around the eyes as a woman of a certain age should. Now Cher looks like a walking Madame Tussaud's figurine but you know it works for her I guess.
Is a man having an affair really going to end his career in show business? Sounds like bullshit. While you can't be America's sweetheart if you cheat on your husband I doubt that the same goes for a dude. Maybe if he's doing Weinstein's wife or some other big $$$ mover and shaker he might find it harder to find work. How close could he be with his acting partner(or whatever enty is trying to imply here) that the partners career would be seriously affected also??
ReplyDeleteMeg fell in love. Russell was having an on-location fling. She was crushed when she realized their big romance was one-sided & she got publicly trashed.
ReplyDeleteThe surgery came later. Post break-up or divorce is a common time for emotionally bruised women to get nip-tucked. Other gals settle for a new hairdo.
What about the blind? Just curious if anyone can guess. We know about Meg, he named her.
ReplyDeleteI think the Today show guess is fabulous. Natalie and Savannah are interchangeable. I doubt I'd be able to identify either of them if they weren't in their assigned seats on the couch. Natalie and Matt are having an affair, and the world being what it is, his career won't suffer but Natalie's will. Savannah will get caught in the crossfire because people will know it's one of the ones who isn't Katie, Meredith, or Ann Curry, but they won't know which.
ReplyDelete@Tammy the affair was HUGE! It was in every tabloid, entertainment, and industry insider magazine and tv program, plus standard news publications. Unfairly, she had been given this imagine of "Miss Goody Two Shoes" along with the "America's Sweetheart" title. Stupid, but there it is. Middle America and basically the Bible Belters were appalled. Her turning 40, and then the tragic face work tanked her. Now that she's old, I'm assuming that her affair with John Cougar Dickmitten isn't really an issue anymore, now that she's skidding down the list.
